East Rutherford, NJ, July 16 -- The New Jersey Nets have signed free agent center Alonzo Mourning, Nets President/General Manager Rod Thorn announced today. As per team policy, terms of the contract were not released.

“ We are very pleased to add a player of Alonzo’s stature to our roster,” said Thorn. “ His physical presence down low and the mental toughness he brings to the game will strengthen our team immeasurably.”

The 33-year old Mourning is a seven-time NBA All-Star and two-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year. Drafted in the First Round (second pick overall) by Charlotte in the 1992 NBA Draft, Mourning played three seasons with the Hornets before joining Miami for the 1995-96 campaign (traded on Nov. 3, 1995, along with Leron Ellis and Pete Myers for Glen Rice, Khalid Reeves, Matt Geiger and 1996 first round draft choice).

The 10-year veteran has career marks of 20.3 points and 9.8 rebounds in 622 regular season games, shooting 53% from the field. The 6-10 Georgetown product has also appeared in 55 playoff games during his career (16-Charlotte, 39-Miami), averaging 19.9 points and 9.9 rebounds while shooting 49% from the field.

Mourning, a member of the gold-medal-winning 2000 U. S. Olympic Team, was an All-NBA First Team selection in 1999, All-NBA Second Team in 2000, NBA All-Defensive First Team twice (1999,2000) and NBA All-Rookie Team in 1993.

Mourning, who sat out the 2002-03 season due to a kidney ailment, will wear #33.
