" We are obviously delighted to re-sign Jason to a long-term contract," said Thorn. " He is an elite performer who has been instrumental in the team's success over the past two seasons."

The Nets originally obtained the 6-4 Kidd on July 18, 2001 along with Chris Dudley in exchange for Stephon Marbury, Johnny Newman and Soumaila Samake. In his two seasons with the Nets, Kidd has averaged 16.7 points and 9.3 assists during the regular season, and 19.8 points and 8.6 assists over the course of 40 NBA Playoff games.

Overall, the nine-year veteran has career stats of 16.7 points and 9.3 assists during the regular season and marks of 17.3 points and 9.0 assists in the playoffs.

A four-time All-NBA First Team honoree and a three-time All-Defensive First Team selection, Kidd became the first Nets player to lead the league in assists this past season, averaging 8.9 assists per game while averaging a career-high 18.7 points, 6.3 rebounds and 2.2 steals. Kidd ranked second in the Eastern Conference in double-doubles (31), and recorded the most double-doubles of any guard in the NBA.

Kidd, who was named Second Team All-NBA and All-Defensive Second Team, was named 'Eastern Conference Player of the Month' for December, making him the only point guard in the league to cop the league's 'Conference Player of the Month' award. Kidd also garnered the 'Eastern Conference Player of the Week' award on two different occasions.
