EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J.—NETS Basketball will host its first-ever An Evening of Russian Culture presented by Aeroflot – Russian Airlines, when the team faces Russian star Andrei Kirilenko and the Utah Jazz on Wednesday, January 19 at the Prudential Center. Game time is 7 p.m.
Aeroflot (www.aeroflot.ru/cms/en <http://www.aeroflot.ru/cms/en> ) is Russia’s leading air carrier and among Russia’s most recognized brands. Associate sponsors for An Evening of Russian Culture include Russian American Foundation, RheemBell & Mermelstein, LLP, and Jacob & Co.
The NETS will showcase Russia’s culture and spirited traditions by offering Russian music to be played during the game and other entertainment. As a special addition, the NETS and the Russian American Foundation are holding auditions for all Russian-speaking youth, ages 12 to 20, to perform the U.S. National Anthem at the game.
The auditions will be held on Monday, January 10 at 5 p.m. at Tatiana Restaurant at 3152 Brighton 6th St in the Brighton Beach section of Brooklyn, NY. People who plan to audition are asked to bring a photo of him- or herself. Also, everyone under 18 who auditions needs to be accompanied by an adult.
The halftime festivities will include a basketball game between two Russian-American youth community teams.
Russian Samovar, a top Russian restaurant in Manhattan, will cater the pre-game reception for Russian dignitaries and other guests.
“We would like to use this opportunity to introduce the NETS to the Russian community in greater New York City as we prepare for the move to Brooklyn,” said NETS Principal Owner Mikhail Prokhorov. “It will also be a chance to give NETS fans a taste of Russia. I'm sure it will be a fun night, and I'm happy to be attending.”
“We’re thrilled to celebrate Russia’s rich culture during what will be the first of many NETS events with the Russian community en route to the Barclays Center in Brooklyn,” said NETS CEO Brett Yormark. “As part of our outreach we are teaming with our sponsors for the event to donate a number of tickets to the Russian community.”
In addition to introducing elements of Russian culture to their fans, the NETS are continuing their goal of bringing Russian speaking fans in New York and New Jersey closer to their team. In December, 2010 the NETS launched www.netsrussia.com, a Russian language website that offers NETS related content translated into Russian, such as articles on the team, interviews with players, coaches and management, photographs, and ticket information.
Since Mikhail Prokhorov’s majority purchase of the team in May, 2010, the NETS are receiving significant interest in Russia, where many NETS games this season are being seen on NTV Plus. In addition, during the team’s visit to Moscow in October, the players conducted a clinic before 3,000 youngsters at the CSKA arena, and several players appeared at an adidas store to celebrate the opening of the first NETS merchandise shop in Russia.
