EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J.—NETS Basketball will play in the first-ever NBA regular season games in Europe when it faces the Toronto Raptors in back-to-back games at The O2 arena in London, England on March 4 and 5 as part of NBA Games – London 2011.
“I am very happy that the NETS are participating as the home team in the NBA's first international regular season games in Europe,” said NETS Principal Owner Mikhail Prokhorov. “Along with our preseason games in China in October, the games to be played in London next March demonstrate my commitment to bringing the NBA experience to international fans and making the NETS the first global team in the NBA. I thank the NBA for organizing these games.”
“We are thrilled by this momentous opportunity to play in the first two regular season games in Europe,” said NETS Chief Executive Officer Brett Yormark. “Bringing our team to London continues our goal to extend the global brand of our franchise. We are also looking forward to spending time with our UK-based partner Barclays, the naming rights partner the Barclays Center, our planned home in Brooklyn.”
“We are very excited to be part of history by playing in the first two NBA regular season games to be held in London,” said NETS General Manager Billy King. “Coach Avery and our players are very well aware of the significance of these two games, and I am sure the fans in London will be very pleased to witness first-hand the excitement of NBA basketball.”
This will mark the NETS’ second trip to London in recent years, as the team played the Miami Heat in 2008 at The 02 as part of the successful NBA Europe Live presented by EA SPORTS™.
