Lopez scores 38 as Nets beat Mavericks
DALLAS—Brook Lopez missed almost the first two months of the season because of a broken right foot, and the Nets eased him back into the lineup.
While the 7-foot center finally played his first two games last week, his minutes were somewhat limited and he was even inactive for the game in between those. There was more rest during the All-Star break over the weekend before the Nets finally let him loose.
Lopez scored 38 points, including the go-ahead free throws with 42 seconds left, and the Nets held on for a 93-92 victory over the Dallas Mavericks on Tuesday night.

TURNING POINT: Dallas missed its first 14 shots in the fourth quarter and trailed 89-79 with less than five minutes remaining. That should have clinched it for the Nets, but the Mavs rallied with a 13-2 run and took a brief 92-91 lead on a 3-pointer with 48.9 seconds left by Jason Kidd. That turned out to be the only basket of the night for Kidd (1-for-7, all from 3-point range). After Brook Lopez converted his two decisive free throws on the next possession, Kidd missed with 25.9 seconds left and then missed a contested 3-pointer at the final buzzer after the Nets' defense had ganged up on Dirk Nowitzki.
INSIDE THE ARENA: Nets forward DeShawn Stevenson received his 2011 NBA championship ring from the Mavericks during a pregame ceremony. He was center stage at the end of the game, too, getting a hand in Kidd's face and contesting the final shot.

On Brook Lopez: "He was a monster tonight. He carried us from the start of the game. It makes a difference, as I’ve said all season, once we get him back and we become a different team. You saw that a lot tonight. "Sometimes, it's just throw the ball in and watch him go to work. When double-teams come, he knows how to find people. He’s not selfish, he knows how to play the game, and I’m glad we have him back." |
