Nets vs. Mavs; Kidd returns to Dallas
By Matt McQueeny

Nets Captain Jason Kidd began his NBA career in the city of Dallas, selected with the #2 pick overall in the 1994 NBA draft. Much the way Kidd immediately helped turn around the Nets, he did so with Dallas; as a rookie, Jason led a 23-game turnaround, helping the Mavericks to 36 wins only a season after they won 13. The Mavericks won 12 more games than they did the two previous seasons combined.

Kidd won co-rookie of the year honors (with Grant Hill) and truly laid the framework for his hall-of-fame career. In 79 games, he averaged 11.7 points, 7.7 assists, and 5.4 rebounds. Kidd led the league in triple-doubles with four. The first game of his NBA career was, coincidentally, a home win against the Nets.

In the 1995-96 campaign, Kidd’s averages and personal accolades continued to mount; the point guard was elected to his first all-star game - as a starter - and had season averages of 16.6 points, 9.7 assists, and 6.8 rebounds. Triple-double count: 9 for the season.

Just as Kidd’s play ascended, the Maverick’s team play went backwards; the team won 26 games and were befallen by injury.

Jason’s career in Dallas ended up being short-lived, as he would play just 22 games in a Mavericks uniform in the 1996-97 season before being traded to Phoenix, just before the new year (12/26/96).
