JAMAAL MAGLOIRE
CONFERENCE CALL TRANSCRIPT
July 17, 2007
Tell me why you picked New Jersey?
The reason why I picked New Jersey is because it was the best basketball decision for me. I was offered a contract for more years and more money but this is a chance to play on a good team that is competitive and has a chance to win the Finals. It is not about the money it is about winning games.
Talk about playing with Jason Kidd and what that does for a guy who plays on the inside?
That was one of the major reasons for coming here. To play with Jason Kidd is a chance to win a lot of games and be a part of something great. Jason Kidd speaks for himself. He is a phenomenal player. He makes everyone around him better. I am looking forward to the opportunity of working with him.
Do you see yourself fitting a need with the Nets?
Not to take anything away from New Jersey, but I felt they have some good pieces here. My only objective is to enhance and make things better here. I am a scorer and a rebounder. I take pride in playing every game whether hurt or not. I bring a toughness that I haven’t seen in this league very often. The things that I bring along with the things that are here I think we are the team to beat.
When Rod and Lawrence tried to sell you on the idea of coming to Jersey did you want to say I was an All Star before and I don’t need a sales job, but to just find a place that I can prove myself. Or does the other stuff matter to find a place that fits?
I always see myself as an All Star and I have goals of going back. I want to put myself in the best position I could to go back to the All-Star Game. Playing with Jason Kidd, it doesn’t get better than him. I wanted to put myself in the best basketball position I could. It was almost a no-brainer to take the contract to come to New Jersey.
What will you bring to the Nets?
I bring first and foremost a lot of intangibles. I bring toughness to the game. The league has changed a lot since my rookie year and second year. The league has gotten soft. There are few players left like me. I always try to have my teammates back. To be able to get offensive rebounds and score when asked is what I bring to the table for this team.
People you respect and admire say you stopped looking at the rim… is that a function of coaches wanting you to change your game?
I haven’t lost any confidence at all. I have always been a confident player. I know the work that I put in before and after practice. This is the best opportunity of 30 teams for Jamaal Magloire.
Why did you want one year?
Because I believe in myself. I know that given the right opportunity to play on a good team everything will take care of itself. I think it is an opportunity to be an integral part along with (Richard) Jefferson, (Vince) Carter and Jason (Kidd). When you win and go far everything will take care of itself. I wanted to bet on myself because I believe in myself. That is why I took a one year deal.
This team has had the same starting five last couple years… can you make your way into the starting five for the Nets next season?
Absolutely. I wouldn’t come into this position otherwise. I work extremely hard and we all want to see ourselves get our just deserves. I’m looking forward to coming to training camp and earning my spot. My goal is to be starter and help this team win.
What about team goals… what is the ceiling for this team?
NBA Champion.
Anybody could say that, is that a realistic goal?
Don’t you believe it... or else you shouldn’t be writing for us…
Do you see what Mikki Moore did last year as an example of what a post player can do when they are playing with the talent that is on the Nets?
I did see an opportunity playing in New Jersey. I have watched Mikki (Moore) close over the past year. I am very happy for him. He is Mikki Moore, and I’m Jamaal Magloire and there is a lot that I bring to the table that I can probably count on my hand. I am going to put a nice spin on this team playing within the team concept. I can assure you we will be a better team than last year.
Do you have statistical goals?
No.
