NETS Thinking Big on Wednesday

By Ben Couch

The NETS brought the bigs on Wednesday, welcoming a group that included Keith Benson (Oakland), JaJuan Johnson (Purdue), Jeremy Tyler (Tokyo Apache) and Jordan Williams (Maryland). All but Benson are projected to be selected within the Nets' range; even Benson could go somewhere around No. 36, though likely afterward.

With four bigs on the floor alongside two guards (Georgetown's Austin Freeman and Pittsburgh's Brad Wanamaker), the play was focused in the post, with battles underneath broken up by the occasional high-post/outside jumper. Johnson showed the best range of the group (no surprise; he envisions himself as a stretch 4) and Williams notably improved in the workout's final minutes, hitting an elbow jumper and rebounding like he did at Maryland (11.3 per game as a sophomore).

Off-court, the most impressive performance came from Tyler, who went pro after his junior year of high school in San Diego, playing a rough, shortened 2009-10 season for Israel's Maccabi Haifa before latching on in Japan last year. Playing for the Tokyo Apache under former Spurs coach Bob Hill, Tyler apparently gained a great deal of maturity and polish (and media training?), showing personality, directly and calmly answering all questions put to him – even the challenging ones. With his size (6-foot-10, 255 pounds), athleticism and shot-blocking ability, it's likely he'll convince a GM he's a safe investment. Intriguing development there.
