Nets Begin the Hunt for a Diamond in the Rough

BROOKLYN - By Lenn Robbins Looking for that proverbial diamond in the rough, the Brooklyn Nets will hold workouts for 32 free agents on June 2-4, the team announced on Thursday.

The list of free agents is comprised of some well-known local players, such as former Iona star point guard Scott Machado and former St. John’s star swingman D.J. Kennedy.

Machado, who was high school teammates with San Antonio Spurs swingman Danny Green, set the MAAC career assists record and was a finalist for the Bob Cousy and John Wooden Awards.

Kennedy, who was high school teammates with Dallas Mavericks forward DeJuan Blair, helped St. John’s get back to the 2011 NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2002. He might have been drafted that June had he not suffered a torn ACL in his right knee, just before the tournament.

Also trying to catch the eye of GM Billy King is former Kentucky star DeAndre Liggins, former Syracuse forward Donte Greene and former Duke star Lance Thomas of Brooklyn.
