D-League in the Community

In addition to bringing the NBA style of play to non-NBA cities, the D-League is also deeply committed to creating programs that improve the quality of life for all people in the community.

The Flight teamed up with Girls Inc. to keep Huntsville beautiful by cleaning up a local neighborhood, as a part of the Great American Clean-up.
All D-League teams participate in the league's community relations programs:
  • Read to Achieve
  • Community Builders

Teams have their own community outreach efforts as well, including:

  • Special Military Offers
  • Kids Clubs
  • School Day Program
  • Heroes Among Us
  • D-League High School Sportsmanship Day
  • Student Acheiver Program

    READ TO ACHIEVE
The D-League teams will work to promote the love of reading by executing reading related programs and activities such as Welcome Back to School events, Read to Achieve Day, and monthly Reading Timeouts at schools, libraries and community organizations as well as in D-League arenas.

Huntsville Flight players and staff volunteered for the Toys for Tots Program by sorting the toys to be distributed to the children.
    COMMUNITY BUILDERS PROGRAM
    (Employee Volunteer Program)

D-League Teams actively pursue volunteer opportunities at community events. They work with schools, community organizations and non-profits. Players, coaches and staff also serve as volunteer reading coaches and participate in more comprehensive projects around Thanksgiving and the December Holidays.

    SPECIAL MILITARY OFFERS
The Columbus Riverdragons and Fayetteville Patriots offer a ticket discount to show their appreciation and continued support for the United States Military.

    KIDS CLUBS
Several teams in the D-League have established Kids Clubs. These clubs are very important to the league because the kids in the community are very important to us.
"Having fun in a drug free and safe environment is a great way for kids to spend some of their free time. Getting the community involved in providing these opportunities acknowledges that the community does care about the quality of life and social alternatives for our children." (From the Fayetteville Patriots Sgt. Slam Seats for Kids Program)

    SCHOOL DAY PROGRAM
The goal of the School Day Program is to introduce the D-League experience to students, teachers and parents in a fun and educational way.
The “Flight Field Trip” experience included a game ticket, Flight promotional item, a book for each student, message board recognition at the game, and much much more. Additional activities included an anti-drug message from the Flight’s alliance with Partnership for a Drug Free Community during the game.

Monte Sano Elementary School was honored with the Huntsville Flight’s Heroes Among Us Award at the March 15, 2003 Game. The Flight honored the school with this award for having 100% PTA parent participation.
    HEROES AMONG US
The Heroes Among Us Award is presented to an individual or individuals who, through their unique commitment, have made exceptional and lasting contributions to the local community. Teams present this award monthly to individuals, who through their unique commitment and humanitarian spirit, have made exceptional and lasting contributions to the local community. The heroes are recognized during a pregame ceremony and given two tickets to the game.

    D-League HIGH SCHOOL SPORTSMANSHIP PROGRAM
On or around March 5, which is National Sportsmanship Day, NBDL teams may honor a high school boys basketball team and girls basketball team as sportsmanship winners. These teams are comprised of athletes who not only excel on the court but who exemplify positive qualities academically and in the community as well.

    STUDENT ACHIEVER PROGRAM
The Student Achiever program runs throughout the school year, rewarding students for various reasons such as perfect attendance, straight A's or the "Hustle Award," which rewards kids that improve greatly in certain academic areas. The program is highlighted at games, usually around the end of the grading periods.
In Roanoke, Student Achiever tickets are provided by BB&T and other sponsors, so that the school contact can award kids for excellence. Parents, family and friends have the opportunity to purchase $6 group tickets with their kids. The kids and sponsor are recognized in-arena that night, and the kids participate in a pregame parade with mascot Dazz around the court as well.
