SACRAMENTO, Calif., Dec. 8 -- Sacramento Kings forward Shareef Abdur-Rahim had surgery on his right knee Friday and is expected to miss the rest of the season.
Abdur-Rahim, in his 11th NBA season, averaged 1.7 points, 1.7 assists and 8.5 minutes per game in six games off the bench this year for Sacramento.
Abdur-Rahim underwent the arthroscopic procedure to remove bone spurs and joint lining from his right knee at the UC Davis Medical Center.
As a free agent in 2005, Abdur-Rahim signed with Sacramento after failing a physical for the New Jersey Nets because of the knee.
Though he has a history of knee problems, Abdur-Rahim toughed out 80 games for the Kings last season. The pain and stiffness he played through, however, took a toll on his stat line as he averaged a career-low 9.9 points and 5.0 rebounds per game.
Abdur-Rahim underwent cleanup surgery on the knee in June, but problems with it persisted throughout the offseason and into training camp.
Abdur-Rahim sat out for several weeks in October, returning to the Kings lineup on Halloween to play for 19 minutes against the Hornets. He went 0-for4 from the field, his two points coming from the foul line.
Abdur-Rahim tallied minutes in just five more Kings games on the season, his last on Nov. 12, when his seven minutes netted no points and two rebounds. The Associated Press contributed to this report.
