DALLAS (March 6, 2006) - The Dallas Mavericks, the American Red Cross and Wal-Mart held a community blood drive on Saturday, March 25 at the Wal-Mart Store in Dallas.
This event is the first of four community blood drives to be held at local Wal-Mart locations. Other local businesses contributing to the community drive include Southwest Airlines, Verizon SuperPages, Texan Home Mortgage, Univision Media, Mercado Bilingue and UPN 21.
"Given the Metroplex's large Hispanic population and the low percentage of blood donors in that community, this is an extremely important educational
initiative that we are proud to communicate," said the Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban. "In conjunction with the American Red Cross, Verizion SuperPages and Texan Home Mortgage, we are able to spread the word about the importance of giving blood while also creating a fun event."
During the community blood drive, the Dallas Mavericks made the experience enjoyable and festive with Mavs mascot Champ, the Mavs Street Team and the ManiAACs. Everyone who donated received a fun gift.
“We are so excited about holding community blood drives with such great business partners. We thank everyone for making a commitment to work with the Red Cross as we try to help save precious lives,” said Calvin Smith, the Executive Director of the Southwest - Texas Region of the American Red Cross Blood Services. “We also thank everyone who makes a personal commitment to donate blood. You truly make a great difference to local patients in need of blood.”
To donate blood, a person must be in good health, be at least 17 years old and weigh 110 pounds or more. To get more information please call 469-341-1097. Information is also given in Spanish. Volunteer blood donors must also show identification at registration. Please bring a Red Cross donor card, a valid driver’s license or other form of official picture identification.
