Offseason Report: Calathes headed stateside?

Could the Dallas Mavericks’ backcourt be adding a new face -- but an old name -- this summer? It certainly appears that will be the case.

As first reported by Eurohoops.net, guard Nick Calathes could be headed stateside after expressing interest in beginning his NBA career with the Mavericks.

According to ESPNDallas.com, Calathes has had discussions with the Mavericks’ front office this week.

Calathes was a second-round selection of Minnesota before being dealt to the Mavs in 2009 but has spent three years suiting up for the Greek League’s Panathinaikos. Despite being pursued by plenty of European clubs, the former Florida standout is reportedly interested in joining the Mavericks on a nonguaranteed contract this summer, likely suiting up for the Dallas team that will compete in the Las Vegas Summer League from July 13-22.

The 6-foot-6, 195-pound Calathes averaged 17.1 points, 5.3 rebounds and 6.4 assists as a sophomore, leading Mavericks president of basketball operations and GM Donnie Nelson to describe the now 23-year-old as a “first-round talent.”

His numbers steadily increased during his three-year stint in Greece, coming off a season in which he averaged 7.6 points, 2.8 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 1.2 steals an outing.
