If you take a sniff and smell the sweet scent of basketball in the air, that’s because the upcoming 2012-13 season is just around the corner.

Thursday, the NBA and the Dallas Mavericks announced the preseason schedule, slating the former champions for eight exhibition games.

After playing just two games in a home-and-home series against Oklahoma City last preseason due to the lockout, the new-look Mavericks will have much more time for fine-tuning before the regular-season opener in Los Angeles against the Lakers on Oct. 30.

The Mavs head overseas as well, sending 11-time All-Star Dirk Nowitzki back to his native country of Germany before also making a trip to Spain.

On Oct. 6, the Mavs will tip off the preseason with a trip to Berlin’s O2 World to face off against eight-time German champions Alba Berlin. The team will then travel on to Barcelona for a head-to-head matchup against 17-time Spanish champions FC Barcelona Regal of the Euroleague on Oct. 9. at Palau Sant Jordi as part of NBA Europe Live 2012.

Back stateside and returning to the American Airlines Center on Oct. 15, the Mavericks will get their first test against another NBA team, facing off with Jeremy Lin and a Houston Rockets squad that they’ll see four times during the regular season.

All told, the Mavs will play four exhibition games at home, hosting a Steve Nash-less Phoenix team on Oct. 17 and No. 1 overall pick Anthony Davis and Southwest Division rival New Orleans on Oct. 22, sandwiching a road test in Atlanta against the Hawks on Oct. 20.

The Mavs then wrap up the preseason with a tune-up game in Wichita, KS at the INTRUST Bank Arena against the reigning Western Conference champion Oklahoma City Thunder on Oct. 24 before a final showdown at home against ex-Maverick Brendan Haywood and the Charlotte Bobcats on Oct. 26.

Note: All of the preseason games played in the United States can be heard on ESPN 103.3 FM and in Spanish on KFLC (1270 AM). Local television coverage will be announced at a later date.
