Dikembo Mutombo, who helped lead the Philadelphia 76ers to the NBA Finals last month, was selected as the overall "Good Guy" in sports by The Sporting News for his humanitarian work off the court, both in the United States and in his native Africa.
Mutombo is the subject of the cover story in the July 16 issue of The Sporting News. This is the third year in which The Sporting News has selected 99 "good guys" from the professional sports it covers, with the research and writing done by senior editor Paul Attner.
Also selected as #1 in their respective sports are the retiring Cal Ripken Jr. of Baltimore (MLB), Kansas City lineman Will Shields (NFL), Sacramento center Vlade Divac (NBA), Pittsburgh owner/center Mario Lemieux (NHL) and NASCAR's Kyle Petty. Each is highlighted by a feature article in the issue, with the other selections shown as thumbnail sketches.
The full list is featured on sportingnews.com, as well as discussed on Sporting News Radio (formerly One-on-One Radio), the nation's largest sports radio network.
