MAVERICKS NAME SAM VINCENT AN ASSISTANT COACH
DALLAS August 31, 2006 - The Dallas Mavericks announced the team has signed Sam Vincent as an assistant coach. He joins Del Harris and Joe Prunty on Avery Johnson’s staff. As per club policy, terms of the contracts were not disclosed.
“We are excited to add Sam to our staff to replace Rolando Blackman as he moves on to bigger and better things with the organization”, said Head Coach Avery Johnson. “Sam brings a wealth of head coaching experience to the Mavericks. He was also a former player who won an NBA championship with the Celtics. We strongly support the NBDL and it is a great pleasure to call-up Sam.”
Vincent, a seven-year NBA pro, joins the Mavericks after serving as the head coach of the NBDL’s Fort Worth Flyers. Last season, he guided the Flyers to a league-best 28-20 record and advanced to the championship game. The Flyers lost to Albuquerque 119-108 in the final. Over the summer, he was an assistant coach with Dallas during the Toshiba Vegas Summer League and the Rocky Mountain Revue and was the head coach of the Nigerian National Team during the 2006 FIBA World Championships.
A native of Lansing, Mich., he attended Michigan State University where he averaged 16.8 points per game for the Spartans and earned several awards, including team MVP honors in 1983-1985 and The Sporting News All-America honors in 1985. He ranks sixth in career scoring, ninth in career assists and third in career steals.
Vincent was selected by the Celtics in the first round (20th overall) in the 1985 NBA Draft. As a pro, he averaged 7.8 points per game and 3.9 assists per game with Boston (1985-86 and 1986-87), Seattle (1987-88), Chicago (1987-88 and 1988-89) and Orlando (1989-90 to 1991-92). He won an NBA Championship with the Celtics in 1986.
