David West:
On winning the first game: “We wanted to do what we could to get this first win. We felt like this was really the most important game of the series, so we wanted to get off to a good start.”
On first half: “We came out a little tight. I thought they executed a little better than we did, we were in a little bit of a hurry. As soon as we settled down, we were able to get into our game. We attacked them defensively and it paid off for us. I don’t think it was nerves, I just think we tried to hard to get off to a good start in the game. I think we had a few turnovers and some guys missed some shots. We just were not taking our time. I think we were anxious to make sure we got off to a good start. We has some miscues, both offensively and defensively.”
On the third quarter play: “We were able to attack them on the defensive end limiting them on some of the things they like to do. It allowed us to be in a position to get close and cut the lead down and eventually take the lead and push it open.”
Chris Paul:
On preparing for the playoffs: “I was really looking forward to this opportunity…I talked to a lot of people, my teammates, my coaches… and they said to just play your game and have fun and let everything else take care of itself. The biggest thing that I have learned about the playoffs in one game is the preparation for it. I think our coaches did an outstanding job letting us know what sets we were going to see. I’m sure they (Dallas) did the same thing. What enabled us to get around in the third quarter was our defense. We picked up our defensive intensity. We’ve been saying all year that we are at our best when we defend, rebound, and run. That’s what we got the opportunity to do in the third quarter.”
On the increased intensity in the second half: “He (Coach Scott) told us to come out (after halftime) and be aggressive. The most aggressive team always wins.”
On what the team needs to improve on by Game 2: “We still have to do a lot better in transition. Jason Kidd is one of those guys…I think he had nine rebounds tonight. Anytime he gets a defensive rebound, it’s a one-man fast break. They do a good job of getting out in transition. We have to slow them down. That starts with me, personally. We’ve got to keep them off the foul line a little bit, too. We got a lot of fouls. They made free throws. I think they’re the best free throw shooting team in the league. We’ve got to try and contain them a little bit and execute a little bit more on the offensive end.” |
