NBA Finals - Miami Scouting Report: June 8, 2006

Dwayne Wade is having a great playoff run. During the playoffs he has managed 26 pts , 6.5 asst and 5.2 reb. This Isolation play (open) is a play that Miami will use repeatedly in the half court and occasionally in transition. This is a simple play that utilizes the great one on one skills of Wade.

Williams (1) is deep right corner with Walker (3) located in the deep left corner. Haslem (4) is right baseline with O'Neal (5) starting on the left block. It should be noted that if Walker is playing the four position instead of Haslem then he would start high on the left wing. Wade (2) has the ball at the top of the circle just above the three point line. Wade (2) will either dribble up the court ontransition or he will recieve a pass from Williams (1) if it was part of their half court set.

As Wade (2) is isolated at the top he has a few options:
1) Wade could pull up for the long or mid range jump shot or dribble penetrate into the lane for the layup or foul.
2) He may Dribble towards the basket and drop pass the ball into O'Neal (5) particularly if O'Neal's defender decides to block his shot at the rim.
3) Pass to Haslem (4) on the baseline or if Walker is in the game as the four-man then he could make the pass to him for the long three point shot.

Miami is an excellent high or middle screen and roll team. The Heat will normally have their power forward, either  Haslem or Walker setting the screen with Shaquille O'Neal Located on the lower left block. Having Shaq on the lower left block is important for Miami because he will step into the lane in a post up position (we refer to this action as a duck in move) looking to receive the pass from the penetr5ating guard. Our big men must play high on Shaq and take away his duck in move. If Shaq does receive the pass from the ball that deep in the lane he is almost impossible to stop, therefore we must foul him early and hard. Once he gets the ball up to his shoulders it is too late for he will take the ball and the defender to the rim. Miami will run the middle or high pick and roll with either their point guards, Jason Williams and Gary Payton or their outstanding All-Star two guard, Dwayne Wade. The Heat big men will also slip the screen or quickly fade to the high wing for the jump shot, particularly Walker. This move will also give Wade more room to go one on one with the lane wide open. We cannot anticipate the pick and play Wade to one side or the other. We must play him straight up and try to contain him. If we help on Wade's penetration then we will give either Shaq or their perimeter shooters the easy basket.

The High screen and roll that Miami will use is somewhat different than most teams in that they will use their two guard Dwayne Wade (2) in a majority of their high screen and rolls along with their point guards Jason Williams (1) and Gary Payton (1). Miami also prefers to have Antoine Walker (4) involved as the Screener he represents a better perimeter shooter. Miami will use this play in transition or as a half court set.

Wade (2) or Williams (1) has the ball at the top above the three point line with the other player in the deep right corner. Posey (3) is deep left corner with O'Neal (5) starting on the left block. Walker (4) begins near the top of the circle and steps out close to the three point line to set the screen. Wade (2) / Williams (1) will dribble off the screen and into the lane.

After setting the screen Walker (4) will fade to the high left wing. Wade (1) / Williams (2) has three options:
1) Take the short jump shot or continue to attack the basket for a layup or foul.
2) Pass the ball back to to Walker (4) for either the three point shot or the mid range jumper.
3) Hit O'Neal (5) with the pass as he steps into the lane for the duck in move. The guards will make this pass to Shaq (5) if his defender decides to help on the penetration to the basket.

This is another simple play that is designed to get the ball into Shaquille O"Neal (5) on the left block. O"Neal (5) is averaging over 20 points per game in the playoffs while shooting 61% from the field. It is extremely important for Shaq (5) to have an outstanding series for Miami if they have any hopes of defeating the Mavs. During our playoff run we have been the best defensive team in the playoffs so look for Coach Johnson and staff to devise a plan that will control Shaq (5) and eventually bring home our first NBA Championship.

Williams (1) has the ball at the top of the circle. Wade (2) starts under the basket and runs out to the left wing to receive the pass from Williams (1). After the pass to Wade (2) Williams (1) will fade to the high right wing. O'Neal (5) will fight for position on the left block. Walker (3) is near corner on the right side with Haslem (4) beginning at the right elbow. Wade (1) makes the post entry pass into Shaq (5) and will dive hard to the basket or stay high on the left wing for a short jump shot.

After receiving the ball on the post Shaq(5) has 2 options:
1) Pass to Wade (2) as he cuts to the basket or to Haslem (4) and maybe any perimeter player if their defender decides to help or double team the ball.
2) Make his one on one move in the post for a basket or foul

Miami will post Shaquille O'Neal (5) whenever possible. The Heat can either run a number of complex plays to get him an easy catch on the block or this simple play (early Post) that they can run in transition or as a half court set. Shaq (5) is the most powerful and dominant inside player in the game today. At some point we may need to double team him which could free up one of their perimeter players for a open jump shot.

As Williams (1) brings the ball up the court on the left sideline O'Neal (5) will run to the left block to establish the low post position. Wade (2) will sprint to the right corner with Walker (3) stopping above the three point line on the right wing. Haslem (4) will run and stop just inside the circle.

After entering the ball to O'Neal (5) Williams (1) will either fade to the top or low wing to position himself for a return pass and the three point shot.

Upon receiving the ball on the post Shaq (5) has a number of options. 1) Make his post up move for a basket or foul. His best maneuver is a hard dribble into the middle of the lane for a jump hook or dunk.
2)Pass the ball back out to Williams (1) for a jump shot or Shaq (5) could repost for a deeper post entry pass from Williams.
3) Pass to any open player on the perimeter if their man decides to help or double team him on the low post catch.

Miami Scouting Report: Feb. 9, 2006

Early Offense (Early 5)

Shaquille O'Neal (5) is the most powerful and dominating inside player in the NBA today and maybe in the history of the league. With this early offensive set (Early 5) O'Neal (5) can post up on either side of the key and hopefully before the opponent can set up their defense to double team him inside. This play is also hard to defend because O'Neal (5) is alone in the lane with everyone else spread out on the perimeter.

Williams (1) brings the ball up the right sideline and will first look to pass the ball into O'Neal (5) for the quick post up. He could also make the corner pass to Posey (3) in the right corner who in turn could also make the entry pass into O'Neal (5). Haslem (4) stops at the top of the circle with Wade (2) on the left wing.

If Williams (1) can not enter the ball into O'Neal (5) on the right side he will now swing the ball to Haslem (4) who will give a hard look inside to make the high-low pass into O'Neal (5). Haslem (4) will pass the ball to Wade (2) on the left wing if his pass is denied into O'Neal (5) then O'Neal (5) will continue across the lane fighting for the post position on the left block. Wade (2) will finish this early offensive set by making the post entry pass into O'Neal (5) for his one-on-one post moves.

Single Double Floppy

The single/double is designed to get an easy catch for Dwyane Wade (2) after a series of baseline screens. Majority of the time this play will lead to a side screen and roll between Wade (2) and Shaquille O'Neal (5). Miami will run this play (Floppy) in their half court set throughout the game.

Williams (1) has the ball at the top. Wade (2) is on the let baseline below O'Neal (5) who is positioned at the left block. Posey (3) is on the right block just below Haslem (4). Posey (3) will step into the middle of the lane to set the first screen for Wade (2) while Haslem (4) moves just inside the lane to set the second screen. Posey (3) will now run off the left side with O'Neal setting a screen just inside the lane.

Williams (1) will now pass the ball to Wade (2) on the right wing. It should be noted that Williams (1) could make the pass to Posey (3) on the left wing if Wade (2) is denied the catch on the right side.

Wade (2) initially has two options. He could take the long jump shot after coming off the screens or his second option is to drive the ball into the lane for a lay-up or foul. Wade's (2) third option and the one he will use the most is the side screen and roll. First, Haslem (4) will sprint across the lane to the left baseline. O'Neal (5) will run from the left block to the right wing to set the screen for Wade (2). Wade (2) will dribble hard off the screen and into the lane. Once inside the lane, Wade (2) can take the short jump shot, continue to drive to the basket for a layup or make the pass to O'Neal (5) as he rolls to the basket for a dunk.
