The Lakers still employ the same set of plays as the previous reports including this triangle offensive option called 3 pass/pinch post. The only difference is Kobe Bryant (2) is the player coming off the elbow catch and then going one-on-one from the wing instead of the previous report on Dec. 12th. Los Angeles continues to use the side screen and roll (52) and the post up play (center opposite) for Bryant's (2) isolation and one-on-one plays.
Odom (3) has the ball on the high right wing. Parker (1) is in the right corner with Brown (4) positioned on the right block. Odom (3) passes the ball to Bryant (2) above the three-point line who in turn throws the basketball to Mihm (5) who runs to the elbow (pinch post) to receive the pass.
After passing the ball to Mihm (5), Bryant (2) will sprint around Mihm (5) and will either head to the left post position or to the left wing. At the same time both Brown (4) and Odom (3) will set a double screen for Parker (1) who in turn will sprint off the screens into the high right wing.
Mihm (5) has three options:
1) Mark the drop pass to Bryant (2) on the block for his one-on-one post up moves.
2) Pass to Bryant (2) on the wing if Bryant (2) decides to flare to the wing for his one-on-one moves instead of the post up.
3) If Bryant (2) is denied the pass then Mihm's (5) last option is to hit Parker (1) with the pass for his midrange jump shot.
Triangle Center Opposite
The Lakers like to post Kobe Bryant (2) as much as possible, particularly against smaller players. In this triangle set (center Opposite) Bryant (2) will flash across the lane to receive a post catch. This catch is often referred to as the Jordan Catch made famous as part of the Chicago Bulls Championship teams.
Remember that all of their positions are interchangeable so in this particular set you have Odom (3) starting with the ball above the circle on the right side.
He passes the ball to Parker (1) who is also at the top and who in turn swings it to Cook (4) on the left wing. Odom (3) will now sprint to the left baseline. Mihm (5) will set a back screen for Bryant (2) who comes across the lane from the right side to establish the mid post catch on the left side. Cook (4) has the ball on the wing and will make the post entry pass into Bryant (2).
Bryant (2) has three options.
1. He can pass the ball to Odom (3) who will make a backdoor cut along the baseline and then continue to the right baseline if he does not receive the ball.
2. After entering the ball to Bryant (2) Cook (4) will set down a screen for Mihm (5) who curls into the lane. Bryant (2) will look to make the short over the shoulder pass to Mihm (5) for a layup.
3. After exhausting the other two options Bryant (1) will now go 1 on 1 against his defender and try to complete the play with a post up move and basket.
Side Screen and Roll 52
This side Screen and Roll 52 hurt the Mavericks the last time we played the Lakers. This half court offensive set will allow Kobe Bryant (2) and occasionally Lamar Odom (3) a chance to penetrate into the lane with the aid of a pick set by Chris Mihm (5).
Movement:
Odom (3) starts with the ball high high above the three point line and passes the ball to Bryant (2) on the left wing. Parker (1) is high right side along with Cook (4). Both of these players are dangerous from this area and are capable of hitting the three point shot. Mihm (5) will set a back screen for Odom (3) who after the pass will make a hard out to the basket looking for the return pass from Bryant (2). If he does not receive the pass he will continue thru the lane and into the corner. Mihm (5) will now step out to the left wing to set the side screen and roll for Bryant (2). Bryant (2) will now dribble hard off the screen and into the lane.
He now has three options:
1. Continue to attack the basket for a layup or foul which is normally the option that Bryant (2) would prefer. 2. Pass to Odom (3) if his defender decides to help on the penetration. 3. Bryant (2) may elect to pass out to Mihm (5) who has flared out to the wing looking for the jumpshot.
Lakers Triangle 3Pass Pinch Post
A key component of the Triangle Offense is the elbow action (pinch post). It must be understood that one of the advantages of this offense is that all positions are interchangeable. In other words any player can start in any of the five positions. In this instance we not only have the elbow catch and action, but we also have All-Star Kobe Bryant (2) coming off a double screen looking for a jump shot.
Movement:
Odom (3) brings the ball up the left sideline and stops just above the foul line extended. Bryant (2) is left baseline with Mihm (5) positioned on the left block. If you drew a line between these 3 players it would form a triangle and thus the start of the triangle offense. Odom (3) passes the ball to Parker (1) above the 3pt line who in turn throws the ball to Cook (4) who runs to the elbow (pinch Post) to receive the pass. Cook (4) who has the ball at the elbow has 3 options:
1. He could look to take his man 1 on 1 as the other defensive players are occupied by the weak side action (left side).
2. Establish a two man game between Parker (1) and himself. Cook (4) could either dribble hand off to Parker (1) or as in this drawing he passes to him and then sets a side screen and roll.
3. His final option and the one that the Lakers prefer starts with Mihm (5) stepping off the block and along with Odom (3) who has now moved along side Mihm (5) to form a double screen for Bryant (2). Bryant (2) comes off the double screen looking to either curl into the lane for the layup or make a higher curl looking to take the mid range jump shot.
