The Dallas Mavericks Foundation will award a $2000 Sports Broadcast Journalism Scholarship in memory of Mark Holtz, the Mavericks first radio broadcaster. The scholarship will be awarded to a student who is pursuing a career in Sports Journalism (radio or television).

To qualify you must:
  • be a high school senior who lives within a 75-mile radius of Dallas.
  • begin college during the summer or fall of 2007.
  • be interested in pursuing a career in Sports Broadcast Journalism.

    The scholarship can be used at any accredited four-year college or two-year community or junior college.

    How to Enter:
    Please complete the two page Mark Holtz Memorial Sports Broadcast Journalism Scholarship entry form (click here to download) and enclose a copy of your high school transcript through the junior year (SAT or ACT scores must be included in order to be considered), a letter of recommendation from a faculty member at your school and a typed essay of fewer than 500 words titled "Why I Want a Career in Sports Broadcast Journalism." Optional: audio or video broadcast performance tapes. Entries must be received by Friday, February 2, 2007.

    Criteria:
    A local scholarship committee will have full responsibility for selecting the local winner. All entries will be judged on the following criteria:
  • Academic achievements (including SAT or ACT scores)
  • Extracurricular achievements
  • Personal Essay
  • Letters of Recommendation
  • Audio or video tape, if submitted

    Announcement of Winners:
    The winner will be recognized on court during halftime of the Mavs vs. Nets game on Tuesday March 6, 2007. The Dallas Mavericks will pay scholarship checks directly to the college of the student's choice.

    About Mark Holtz:
    Mark Holtz was born on October 1, 1945 in Elmhurst, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago. He graduated from Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa with a BA in speech in 1967. Mr. Holtz came to Texas in 1980 as sports director of WBAP and the first radio play-by-play announcer for the expansion Dallas Mavericks. He became the Texas Rangers announcer after broadcasting Mavericks games durin the 1981 season.

    His broadcasting experience included the Dallas Mavericks, the Denver Bears, the Omaha Royals, University of Colorado football and basketball, Bradley University basketball and University of Illinois football during a career that began in 1964. He was elected to the Texas Baseball Hall of Fame in 1990.

    Mr. Holtz was diagnosed in 1994 with myelodysplasia, an illness of the bone marrow caused by genetic forming cells, and doctors monitored his next three years. The disease turned to leukemia in June 1997, at which time Mr. Holtz entered Baylor University Medical Center. Mr. Holtz underwent a bone marrow transplant on June 18. He broadcast his final game for the Rangers on May 22, 1997 and passed away on September 7, 1997.
