ORLANDO -- It’s rare that a professional athlete makes changing the future of at-risk youth one of his top priorities in life.

But that’s exactly what Magic Director of Player Development Adonal Foyle is doing through his foundation.

The retired NBA center teamed up with former Golden State Warrior Tim Young and local volunteers to host the Kerosene Lamp Foundation’s first free Athletic & Academics Camp at the Walt Disney Clubhouse of the Boys & Girls Club of Central Florida for 85 youths living in the Pine Hills Community on Thursday.

“Since 2003 I’ve spent my summers putting on our Athletics and Academics Camps for underserved youth in the Eastern Caribbean and now it’s time for Central Florida,” Foyle explained. “In 2012, we are aiming to reach a thousand children through our camps and I’m excited to be able to give back so personally to the Orlando community who made me feel so welcome when I came to play for the Magic.”

Although the event was filled with fun, including a number of basketball skills and drills sessions, shooting contests and prizes, it was also layered with life-building lessons that will help kids take the next step in their future.

The children were split into small groups, which rotated through various sessions, featuring a self-esteem and leadership skills seminar hosted by Foyle, a basketball clinic and a book fair, presented by Scholastic Book Fairs, which sent home a book with each kid to help jumpstart their personal libraries.

“It is my hope that our camps will help children by stressing the importance of education and health and by building their leadership skills and self-confidence,” he explained.
