ROOKIE WATCH
Eric Maynor By Josh Cohen
When we talk about the class of 2009 a few years from now, the most noteworthy discussion will be about all the point guards who were drafted in the first round.

Eric Maynor and Jrue Holiday, two of the rookies on display at the 2009 Orlando Pro Summer League who also clashed in the first round of the 2009 NCAA Tournament, showcased their all-around potential on Tuesday.

Maynor registered 12 points, five rebounds and four assists to help the Jazz surge past Holiday, who tallied seven points, and the Nets/Sixers.

APPRECIATION FOR PAST ACHIEVEMENTS
Coby Karl By Josh Cohen
While watching 2009 Orlando Pro Summer League action, you can’t help but reflect upon each player’s past achievements. Sure, all of the competitors are young and aspire to one day be essential members on NBA franchises. However, many have already accomplished so much.

For example, several starred in front of thousands of spectators in the NCAA Final Four. Four even won a national championship (Marreese Speights, Brandon Rush, Russell Robinson and Tyler Hansbrough).

There are two former NBA D-League MVPs involved. Kasib Powell is featured on the Orlando Magic and Randy Livingston is serving as an assistant coach for the Utah Jazz.

There are others who have overcome more than just obstacles on the court. Coby Karl, for instance, who is running with the Boston Celtics, conquered his fight with thyroid cancer and Orlando’s Lance Allred has dealt with the challenges of being hearing impaired.

Keep an eye out for all of these phenoms as some will become NBA stars.
SHINING IN THE SPOTLIGHT
Kasib Powell By Dan Savage
Throughout his professional basketball career, Kasib Powell has been known for rising to the occasion.

In 2008, while playing for the Sioux Falls Skyforce, Powell exploded for double-figures in 37 out of his 38 games. His 50 percent shooting average from the field and 43 percent mark from downtown earned him a call-up to the Miami Heat and the 2008 D-League MVP award.

Now, he's hoping a few big plays in the 2009 Orlando Pro Summer League will help him lock on to a roster spot with the Magic.

Powell got off to a good start on Tuesday as he finalized a solid 15-point effort by driving hard through the lane and finishing a layup with 16.8 seconds left to secure Orlando's 85-82 triumph over Boston.

"It was a big shot for me," he explained about his bucket in the closing seconds. "I felt I had a mismatch, so I just wanted to go to the basket and make the right basketball play."

  • YOU CAN HEAR THE THUNDER
    Russell Westbrook By Josh Cohen
It’s never easy in the Western Conference to be a serious contender. These days, you have to deal with championship-caliber squads like the Lakers, Spurs and Trail Blazers. But it is evident that the Thunder will eventually be very formidable as they develop team chemistry.

While in Seattle, the franchise selected Kevin Durant and brilliantly acquired Jeff Green in 2007. Drafting Russell Westbrook last year and James Harden this past June, moreover, has given fans in Oklahoma City a reason to cheer and dream. These two former Pac-10 standouts combined for 41 points on Tuesday despite the Thunder falling to the Pacers on the second day of the 2009 Orlando Pro Summer League.

If B.J. Mullens, who contributed eight points, can provide some depth on the interior and Durant, Green and Harden can all coexist, don’t be surprised if OKC becomes a legitimate force in a few years.
    SUMMER LEAGUE STAR
    Ryan Anderson By Dan Savage
Every year in summer leagues, there are certain players that stand out as a class above the rest. You can just tell without looking at a roster that they belong in an NBA rotation.

Even if you've never heard of him before, seen him shine at Cal or demonstrate tremendous versatility in his rookie season with the New Jersey Nets, it's been extremely evident over the past two days that Ryan Anderson is one of those guys. Since opening up 0-for-6 in the first half of Orlando Pro Summer League action on Monday, Anderson has gone a scorching 17-of-23 from the field.

"You kind of need that one game, or for me that one half, to really get acclimated," Anderson said following the contest.

His 33-point effort against the Celtics in Tuesday's 85-82 victory is currently a 2009 Orlando Pro Summer League high.
