POSTGAME QUOTES
Orlando Magic Head Coach Stan Van Gundy:
On overall game…
“Wow. That was very difficult. First of all, I give the Toronto Raptors a heck of a lot of credit. It’s a tough mental thing when you’re down 3 to 1, and you know the next three are on the road. And it’s easy to sort of let it go, especially if you get behind a little bit in the second half. And they didn’t let it go until the buzzer went off. I think that says all you need to say about the Raptors and their toughness, and Sam Mitchell and what he brings to their team. That’s the first thing.
The second thing is, I’m really happy and proud of our players and very happy for them, but I’m extremely happy for the many people in this organization who have worked so hard for so long to finally get back and get a series win. I went and found Rich DeVos right at the end of the game. Bob Vander Weide was back in the locker room, even Joel (Glass), Alex Martins. People that have been around and just worked, and worked, and worked and worked. Those are the people that I’m most happy for. And Otis (Smith) and Dave Twardzik, I’ve said to both of them they’ve worked very, very hard to get it back to this point and I’m extremely happy for them. I thought tonight we did a great job on (Chris) Bosh.
I thought Dwight (Howard) was tremendous there. He did a great job on him and he had him the entire game. I thought our point guards stepped up defensively in the second half. We got on them a little bit at half time. Their two point guards had 22 at the half, only four in the second half. For Dwight, you play a five game series and you have three 20 (points), 20 (rebounds) games, and I’m still yelling at him on every possession. I’m looking for absolute perfection. I’m getting on him in the game and then I look at this afterwards, 21 (points), 21 (rebounds) and 3 blocks. Incredible. Rashard (Lewis) has his second straight double double. The guy averaged about six rebounds on the year, he gets 13 again tonight really fighting hard. Turk’s (Hedo Turkoglu) really struggling, or has struggled to shoot the ball, but he comes up with nine assists and eight rebounds.
Jameer (Nelson) had an unbelievable series. I think he read so much about (Jose) Calderon and (T.J.) Ford and our guard play, and that’s where they had the advantage and everything else. I thought he got the best of that matchup again tonight. (Keith) Bogans, I was very, very close to taking him out of that game, I said that to him afterwards. He was playing fine. He was coming up with rebounds, he was defending, but they were basically leaving that shot in the corner and he was struggling at 1 for 7, and I left him in. That’s great coaching or extreme stupidity. But he makes two in a row, huge ones. Mo (Maurice) Evans had a hell of a game with 12 points and I thought Keyon (Dooling) was solid.
Every single guy I thought really fought hard and played well in that game. We didn’t really shoot well. Only six turnovers after the first quarter, we became a lot more solid and then we made our free throws and those are the kinds of things you have to do. We didn’t even have our best night and to be able to win it in five games, I’m really, really proud of them. They’ve put in a lot of work to get to this point and all I want them to do the next two days is enjoy it. And then on Thursday I’ll go back to being myself again and we’ll start to get ready. But for the next two days I want them to enjoy it. I don’t want them to have to see me. I won’t yell at anybody about anything. They can just have some fun. They deserve it.”
Orlando Magic ForwardRashard Lewis:
“We knew coming into the game that it was going to be very tough for us. We knew that this was an elimination game for them and they were going to do anything to keep the series alive. So I think we were more focused than the first three games. So tonight, we just wanted to play good defense and play good as a team.”
“It just lets you know that we’ll do whatever it takes to win ballgames. If that’s playing defense, rebounding, moving the ball around on the offensive end, get the ball inside to Dwight or shoot the three’s, whatever it takes. We go out there to play to win the ball game regardless of who’s scoring or who’s carrying the load. I think we kind of take turns on moving the ball around to different people and everybody’s starting to step their game up every night.”
Orlando Magic GuardJameer Nelson:
“We’re happy that we won the first round, but we still have business to take care of. We’re not totally satisfied right now. Our goal is to definitely win a championship. And we’re headed in the right direction.”
(On Keith Bogans) “He was struggling a little bit early on and I kind of pulled him to the side and said, ‘You’ve been shooting your shots all season so there’s no reason to stop shooting.’ I’m quite sure the other guys up here told him the same thing. And I just told Dwight we’ve got to make the right plays and Keith Bogans; we’ve got to get him the ball. And we knew that he was going to make the shots. He stepped up big for us in the fourth quarter and made the shots.”
Orlando Magic GuardDwight Howard:
“We’ve worked really hard to get to the level of play that we’ve been playing with this year. And to finally get over the hump and get out of the first round, it means a lot for us. But like Jameer said, we’re not satisfied. Our goal is to win a championship. So we’re going to keep playing and try to play the same way to get that goal.”
“I was just very happy. We put in a lot of work during the off-season just to get where we’re standing today. Our coach has been on us from the first day he got here about finishing things and playing as hard as you can every possession. It really hasn’t hit me yet that we’re past the first round and so it is just an unbelievable feeling. Like it’s nothing right now to explain how I feel because we’ve done something I feel hasn’t been done in a while. And Jameer and I’ve been here, it’s been a long road for us. We’ve always been doubted. And for us to close out a series, it feels good.”
Toronto Raptors Head Coach Sam Mitchell:
On the loss:
“They shot 28% from the three. We made them shoot a bad percentage. (Keith) Bogans made some timely threes in the fourth quarter. Like I said, when you play this basketball team they’re going to shoot a lot of threes and they’re going to score some points. We knew in the regular season that every time we played the Orlando Magic that you’ve got to score and we just couldn’t score. We didn’t make enough shots. I look at our stats and I look at the stats for the game and (Hedo) Turkoglu was 4-13 (shooting) and Rashard (Lewis) was 5-12. We gave ourselves opportunities and it’s tough to think about it.”
“They beat us on the boards. They’ve got a guy in the middle who cleans up a lot of their misses. It’s hard to ask much more of our big guys when they’re battling this guy the way they did with his size and strength, quickness and athleticism. Congratulate Orlando, they played great. Like I told our guys after the game, get your heads up. They played hard. We knew coming in to this series that we needed to score points. We weren’t going to hold this team to 70 or 80 points because they’ve got so many weapons. We just didn’t score enough.”
On the Magic’s ability to penetrate to set up big shots:
“That’s something we had a problem with the whole series. It’s tough. One thing I give those guys credit for, Rashard and Turkoglu, if you don’t stop them, they’re so big, we’re talking about two 6 ft. 10 in. guys who put the ball on the floor. If we don’t commit and stop the dribble penetration, they go all the way to the basket. So you’re kind of stuck between giving help. Do you give up the lay-up? Our guys have been doing a good job closing out and putting pressure on the shooters. And then the tough thing is if you don’t stop the penetration and they miss, if Chris (Bosh) comes over, Dwight Howard cleans up the board. There are not enough things you can do to stop them. Our guys played hard and we did a lot of good things. We played a good first half; we had a two point lead. The game really didn’t get away from us until the last four or five minutes of the game.”
On Chris Bosh struggling for the first time tonight in the series:
“Well the tough thing is that we ask him to do so much. We ask him to block shots, we ask him to score, we ask him to rebound and then for most of the game he had to go down there and battle that guy (Dwight Howard) and Chris is giving up 50 pounds to Dwight. I wouldn’t say he struggled, he just missed some shots. It’s an awful lot to ask of him and we ask that of him and he gives it to us. I’m proud of the way Chris played.”
Toronto Raptors GuardJason Kapono :
“We didn’t play defense. They hurt us with offensive rebounds. I think in the first half they had 10. They beat us on the inside with offensive rebounds, layups, and Dwight is a monster. We did not get stops when we needed to in the fourth quarter.”
“We played hard. Everybody tried their best. They just played better on a consistent basis night in and night out. Game #3 was their only slow night and we capitalized on that. Games 1 and 2 they got out to 20 point leads so obviously we were fighting back from there. Game 4 we had a chance but could not get it done in the fourth quarter. Same thing happened here tonight in Game 5.”
“They made shots. They figured out what we were doing on the defensive side of the ball. They had a counter plan to that and they attacked us. They kept penetrating found their shooters in the corners. We wanted to take away the driving lanes and force them to take threes and close out with our best.”
“Chris has been great. He has done extremely well for himself and for us and played well in Games 3 and 4 and throughout the series. It is not one guys fault. You can’t put the blame on him. It is a team game and a team effort. As a team we came up short.”
Toronto Raptors ForwardChris Bosh :
“I knew that this was an elimination game and there was no time to really get frustrated. You just play the game normal and try for a win. The Magic just played a great game tonight.”
“That is what playoff series are all about. Usually the better team is going to win. You have to hand it to them. They played a great series. They executed on offense and defense better than we did. When it came to the small things they did a better job. I can’t sit here and bark and protest that the better team didn’t win. That is pretty obvious. They beat us pretty good 4-1. I wish them a lot of luck in the second round.”
“We can always get better. We can watch this whole series and watch this whole season and see where we are strong at and where we are weak at. As far as me individually, I am going to continue to get better. I am going to see where I can better my game and continue to play. We can’t let this discourage us. We are still going to have our nucleus back next season. We just have to remember some of these things. We need to remember how the playoffs are going to be…remember how the Magic play…remember how good teams play all year.”
“I know we are young but I have the philosophy you have to do it now. You can always say you’re young, you’re young, you’re young…but then one day you will look up and you are going to be old. You can’t do that. You do it now and if you don’t get it done you keep working.”
“We need to improve on defense. We play good team defense from time to time. I think if we play better one-on-one defense that will make us better defensively. This whole series especially Game #1, I think they did a good job of breaking us down. When you break guys down you don’t even have to run plays. Tonight, they ran a bunch of zipper isolations for Turkoglu and Rashard and even Jameer Nelson. They were able to create.”
Toronto Raptors GuardT.J. Ford :
“It was tough. I think we did everything in the game plan and came in with a lot of energy. We showed a lot of heart, determination, a lot of fight, a lot of win and we showed a lot of character tonight. I think down the stretch they made some big shots. The zone helped us. It slowed them down. It threw their rhythm off. Keith Bogans made two big three pointers to take the lead up from 2 to 7. That was kind of a heartbreaker.”
“They were just the better team. Good luck to those guys the rest of the way. Now we just have to get some rest throughout the summer and continue to get better. We need to come back next year and do better.”
“It (off-season changes) is out of our control. That is up to Bryan Colangelo to make those decisions about which guys will be back and which won’t. As players we do the things that we are supposed to do during the summer and whatever happens be ready for it.”
“I want to be back. I never said anything about wanting to leave. It was a tough stretch with me being in the media with mostly negative things. I think I showed my professionalism. I didn’t let it upset me or affect my play. I am pretty happy with the way I ended up performing this season.”
