POSTGAME QUOTES
Orlando Magic Head Coach Stan Van Gundy:
On overall game:
“Obviously a hugely difficult game after the first quarter. Once they changed their lineup it was very difficult and we’ve obviously got to find some answers at both ends of the floor for that.”
On whether or not to go to (Hedo) Turkoglu on last shot:
“Actually on that play he was not the first option, but he made a good play out of it.”
On being able to pull off the win:
“I told them afterwards, we haven’t been through much yet. Unfortunately at times that’s what the playoffs are. It’s difficult, it’s hard to win. They played extremely well. Knocked down a lot of threes there. (Keith) Bogans gave us a little bit of a cushion. We got a cushion twice. We got a cushion and I thought we gave Dwight (Howard) a little bit of a rest. I thought Marcin (Gortat) went in and played pretty good defense on (Chris) Bosh, and then (Andrea) Bargnani made two real good moves on him. And then Bogans gave us a little bit of a cushion, and then they were knocking down threes. They get the lead, and then Turk makes a good play. We get a couple of stops down the stretch I thought were key. And we came up with the rebound at the end. A good win. I would’ve liked it better if we had inbounded the ball at the end, but we survived anyway.”
On Toronto’s lineup changes:
“They can do a little bit of what we do. They take one good big guy in Chris Bosh and spread you out with a lot of guys on the perimeter that can shoot the ball. And they’ve got (Jose) Calderon, (Carlos) Delfino and (Anthony) Parker who also are guys who can put guys on the floor so the floor’s spread out. And when you come to help on Bosh or come to help on Calderon’s pick and rolls they’re able to move the ball and get shots. And they shot it extremely well in the second half and we struggled with that a little bit. Thankfully we had the cushion from the first quarter. And I don’t think we’ll see that lineup again in Toronto. I’d be very surprised if we saw them start the three big guys in Toronto. I always tell you guys nothing in the NBA surprises me. That would surprise me.”
Orlando Magic ForwardRashard Lewis:
“They changed the lineup on us, they went small. Dwight had to guard him (Chris Bosh) tonight. He knocked down some big jumpers. We knew Bosh was going to come ready to play tonight. He’s a great player and he played well for them tonight.”
“That’s the main thing, we wanted to take care of home-court and we did that. It was a little scary at the end. They went to Bosh and he was hitting his jumpers early in the game. Good thing he finally missed one, it came at the right time when he missed the shot.”
(On Magic 3-pointers) “Tonight, it was a different story. That’s what happens. The series is going to be up and down. Some nights you are going to make shots and some nights you won’t make shots. Depends on who plays the best defense in order to come out with the win.”
(On Dwight) “He’s a dominant player. I think he’s the one that really won the game for us tonight. A lot of offensive rebounds, a lot of put-backs, was able keep that lead. When the guy is giving us 20-20 a night, we’ve got to give him a little bit of help.”
Orlando Magic GuardKeyon Dooling:
“We did exactly what we needed to do, protect home-court. The play-offs, every possession really matters so it was good to grind it out and get that win.”
“You feel good just to come out on top. It was a hard fought game. Both teams played hard. I think they made some adjustments that were beneficial to their team. We just clawed and scratched our way to a win.”
(Any thoughts on his last foul?) “No thoughts, no thoughts.”
“They battled back last time also. Last game we were able to handle their run a little bit better. You’ve got to take your hat off to them; they’re a very good team, especially in the offensive end. Chris Bosh in the first half was amazing. Jose Calderon really got it going in the second half. So our work is cut out for us in Toronto.”
“For a lot of our guys, it will be their first road experience in the play-offs. So we just have to rally together, have each others back and go out with the same intensity we had here.”
(On Dwight) “Yeah, he’s that guy. He’s on his way to being a guy who we talk about 30 years down the line. He’s awesome on both ends of the floor, and he’s kind of our backbone. I mean, he was tremendous on the defensive end, on the glass and offensively, and in the play-offs he’s able to knock down his free throws which is key.”
Toronto Raptors Head Coach Sam Mitchell:
On Hedo Turkoglue’s lay-up:
“I thought he made a tough shot. We knew that was the play that was coming. I thought AP (Anthony Parker) played good defense. He made somewhat of a circus shot. Nothing you can do if a guy makes a tough shot.”
On how the Raptors turned it around after a slow start:
“We kept getting on our guys about lokoing to shoot the basketball, being aggressive. For whatever reason to start the first quarter, we’ve got guys turning down shots. We’ve got Anthony Parker coming off screens that we’re setting, running plays for him, and he’s thinking pass.
Toronto Raptors GuardAnthony Parker:
“We have to get off to a better start. We showed that we can play and made some adjustments. We were more aggressive on the defensive end. I was happy with how we played as a team.”
“I think as a team we were selective and they were really crashing hard on the three point line, so a couple of times we had an opportunity to get to the basket. I personally missed a couple shots earlier and didn’t get too many looks after that. We went to the high screen-and-rolls and other guys were rolling. Jason was playing really well throughout the whole game. Carlos came in and did a great job and Andrea had spurts where he was shooting the ball extremely well.”
“We had a couple turnovers in a row and after that we got it under control. We got some good looks and some good shots. We played well from that point.”
“We had Jose coming off the high screen-and-roll and they had to read it. I thought C.B. did a good job of getting C.B. the ball in a great position. C.B. had a great look and we will live with that.”
Toronto Raptors ForwardChris Bosh:
“I was real comfortable with it (last shot attempt). I knew that he was going to back up and I was going to have space. The last time when I drove to the basket I didn’t get a call so I didn’t want to put it in the referee’s hands. I wanted to get a clean look. I felt I did a decent job. I got a decent look and just missed the shot.”
“You have to tell me (on whether he was fouled on driving attempt late in game). If I didn’t get hit then I don’t know what anybody is seeing. I felt that being aggressive late in the game and going to the basket I am trying to make a play. If I am going towards the basket, how does my momentum take me away? It is over now and you have to let it go.”
“We definitely need to have a better start. We are too cross-matched and there are too many mismatches in the beginning of the game which triggers their break. We are not into the flow offensively. Once we got on the same page with each other, everything took a turn for the best for us. We got wide open looks. We had guys going to the basket. We did a good job with that. In Game 3, we will need to make some adjustments. We will try and win the next one.”
“I knew I was going to have to play a lot tonight. I knew I was going to get my fair share of Dwight tonight. I knew I was going to have to make plays on offensive. That is the name of the game. That is my job and I wouldn’t have it any other way. It is tough that you work so hard and come up a little bit short.”
