Magic Acquire Profit for Haywood

The Orlando Magic have acquired guard Laron Profit and a future first round draft pick from Washington in exchange for the draft rights to center Brendan Haywood, General Manager John Gabriel announced today. Per team policy, terms of the deal are not disclosed.

The Magic now have eight potential first round draft selections during the next four years. Orlando has their own first round pick for the next four drafts, and is owed first round picks from Phoenix, Sacramento, the L.A. Clippers and Washington.

Profit (6'4", 204, 8/5/77) appeared in 35 games for Washington in 2000-01, averaging 4.3 ppg., 2.5 apg., 1.8 rpg. and 1.03 stlpg. in 17.3 minpg. He started the last 12 games for the Wizards, averaging 9.7 ppg., 5.8 apg. and 3.9 rpg. during that span. Profit recorded career-highs in points (18, twice, last on Apr. 17 @ Atlanta), rebounds (eight, Mar. 31 vs. Houston), assists (14, Apr. 11 vs. Chicago) and steals (seven, Apr. 11 vs. Chicago) during the season.

Originally selected in the second round (38th overall) of the 1999 NBA Draft by Orlando, Profit was traded to Washington on Sept. 22, 1999 in exchange for a future second round pick. He has played in 68 career games with the Wizards, averaging 3.0 ppg. in 12.2 minpg.

Profit played four seasons at the University of Maryland. In 125 career games, he averaged 12.6 ppg., 4.6 rpg. and 2.3 apg. for the Terrapins. Profit was a two-time All-America honorable mention and three-time All-ACC Third Team selection. During his senior season (1998-99), he averaged 14.5 ppg. and 4.8 rpg., leading Maryland to the NCAA Sweet 16.

Haywood (7'0", 268, 11/11/79), the 20th overall pick in the 2001 NBA Draft, was acquired on draft night (June 27) from Cleveland in exchange for Michael Doleac. He spent four seasons at the University of North Carolina, averaging 10.0 ppg., 6.0 rpg. and 2.16 blkpg. in 141 career games.
