2005-08 Otis Smith On...
Magic General Manager Otis Smith has a long history in Orlando. As a member of the inaugural 1989-90 Magic squad, Smith spent three seasons playing for the Magic where he averaged 11.4 ppg., 4.1 rpg., 1.9 apg. and 1.01 stlpg. in 195 games in Orlando. He played in 375 career NBA regular season games with Denver, Golden State and Orlando, averaging 10.5 ppg., 3.8 rpg., 1.8 apg. and 1.01 stlpg. in 20.6 minpg.
While helping build a team that will bring an NBA championship to Orlando, Otis also takes the time to answer questions from fans. Have a question or comment for Otis? E-mail him here.
From Mike (12/12): Hi Otis, Mike from New Smyrna Beach. Saw you at the Atlanta game last night. It's a long drive home after a tough loss like that, but I wanted to congratulate you on this year's transactions. Everyone talks about Rashard, but I think the best move might have been at coach. After the debacle with Donavan, quickly getting Van Gundy was brilliant. With a very similar lineup (Lewis in, Battie out) the team is playing a much improved style of ball. I have a question: How is it decided each night which end of the court the home team starts at? Being in 119, I like to see the Magic finish the game down there. Thanks, Mike.
Otis: Mike, it's the visiting team call on where they want to have the ball first. For the most part, visitors like to have their defense in front of their bench in the second half, but its not our call at home.
From Sean (12/06): Otis - I want to thank you for making bold moves in the off season and doing what is right for the team. I have just one question, you still strike me as a competitive person and I was wondering if you wish you could don the Magic Uniform again and score a quick 10 points? If you could, who would you like to play against?
Otis: Sean, I'm old, very old and my body is older than I am! So my days of playing basketball are O-V-E-R! But yes, I am very competitive. And every night we play, I play. I stand in that corner and feel like I'm in the game. I play every game, every night.
But don't kid yourself...these guys today are bigger, faster and stronger than I ever was, so I'll just stay out of their way.
From Chris (12/05): Otis, With a quarter of the season in the books could the fans get an honest to goodness opinion on our team (the Magic), where they stand, What you would like to see further develop, and what this team will need in the future to win a championship. Thanks.
Otis: Chris, I like that...great question. The answer is very simple. We need to continue to grow, develop and learn how to play the game the right way. We have a lot of good players that are still learning how to play. And Stan is doing a very good job teaching our players how to play the right way.
And for us, we are continuing to build a team that can play in June - not just November through April.
From Eric (10/10): Hi Otis, I really like our team this year! Great job putting it together! Do you feel that this group will compete for a finals championship this year or in the next couple, or do you feel you still need to add a player or too to get over the hump.
Otis: Eric, I really do like our team. Like most teams, the key for us is injuries. If we can stay away from the injury bug we have a chance. I really like the way our guys are responding to Stan's coaching style and the system. Keep watching Magic basketball.
From Matthew (10/8): Hi Otis, I was wondering what you were planning on doing about losing Tony Battie? It has such a large affect if you want to use Rashard Lewis at small forward and occasionally play him at the 4 position to increase the tempo. I was wondering if you were considering getting another big man? Tony Battie is a veteran, and who knows how much longer he'll play and Foyle is not a permanent solution. Would you consider trying to trade with Atlanta for one of their young power forwards. With a first round draft pick you probably wouldn't have to give up to much more. And with the Magic on the edge of a breakout season the pick shouldn't end up in the lottery, and a guy like Shelden Williams would really shore up the front court.
Otis: Matthew, Thanks for taking the time to write me. Yes, I know it's been a long time since you guys have heard from me. But you also know the summer was VERY busy for me. I do miss you guys. And all the options you come with for trades, etc.!
Well, for the record, you don't replace Tony and the things he brings to your team. You just can't. What Tony does for your team doesn't always show up in the box score. He is smart and he organizes your team from inside and out. So a knee jerk reaction is not what we need in this situation.
Maybe help comes from within. Maybe you play smaller at times, maybe you play even bigger at times. The point is let's see first before running out and signing another player.
Hey guys...I'm back! Start sending those emails.
Otis
From Soul Bro (6/17): Otis, Great hire in SVG. Why not make a play for a proven, all-star power forward (e.g. Pau Gasol, Shawn Marion) in a sign and trade built around Darko instead of signing Darko and hoping he develops?
Otis: Soul Bro, Hey, if I have to use my full name you should at the very least use your first name. I'm sure your parents didn't name you Soul Bro!
As for trying to get our team better, we will do whatever it takes as long as it makes basketball and financial sense. Keep sending in your ideas.
From Chris (6/7): I don't know about you Otis, but I'm sleeping better at night with SVG being our Head Coach. Your honest thoughts on the new hire?
Otis: Chris, Without question. We won't have to worry about the NBA learning curve with Coach Van Gundy. But I'm also happy for the other guy. He is where he wants to be.
From Marc (6/2): Otis, Are the Magic considering trade possibilities to acquire Kobe Bryant since his recent demand to be traded? Do the Magic think it is worth while to investigate the possibility?
Otis: Marc, Don't believe the hype..."
From Bruce (5/29): Otis, Since we need another "big" inside, will we see Marcin Gortat this upcoming season?
Otis: Bruce, Thanks for your interest in the Orlando Magic. Gortat will be here in Orlando playing on our Summer League team and we'll have to see how his development is coming along.
From Michael (5/24): Are the Magic looking to trade into the lottery this year? It seems a lot of teams outside of Portalnd and Seattle are looking to trade and there are a lot of players getting overlooked because of the recognition of Oden and Durant which the Magic can capitalize on.
Otis: Michael, It is something we'll have to consider, especially if there's a player up there that we really like. With that said, we would target guys as the Draft unfolds. But it would have to be the right guy - a real difference maker. Keep in mind that trading into the first round would eat into cap space. That would affect what we could do in free agency. So it would have to be the right guy. But we will continue to look at everything to get our team better. Thanks for your question.
From Hummels (5/22): Otis, I heard the Magic could possibly trade for Amare Stodimare. Is this true?
Otis: Hummels, For whom? Where do we get these things? Thanks for the support.
From Tony (4/24): Otis, do you feel our bench players are strong enough to contend for a championship?
Otis: Tony, I feel like we have to get better in all areas of the game to compete for a title. I do think the series with the Pistons is good for this young team. We have to learn how to play at a high level for 82 games.
From Brian (4/22): Hi Otis, This summer, how difficult is it going to be to re-sign Darko and add another top free agent? Thank you so much, and keep up the great work!
Otis: Brian, It's more tricky than it is difficult. But we will get it done and put a product on the floor that the city can be proud of. Go Magic!
From Kelvin (4/22): Otis, Hi Sir.. Congrat for making into the playoff. i am a big Magic fan from Malaysia. As a Magic fan, should I be expecting a big move around the league this summer?? i think Magic do need a go-to guy and some one that can hit 3's to spread the defense out so that Howard can hav more space for his post-play! with this, magic can really be a championship competing team! lewis and carter would be suitable but are they too old to fit in magic squad?? wat other free agents are in your mind now??
Otis: Kelvin, I would love to talk to you about free agency, but I really can't. All I can say is we will be a better team next year. We will do whatever it takes to put a team on the floor that will compete for a championship. Always keep things moving in a positive direction. Go Magic!
From Kevin (2/19): Hey Otis, with all the rumors of Scottie Pippen coming back, is there any possiblity we could sign him here??? I think he'd fit perfectly right now in the absence of Trevor Ariza, and the occasional absence of Grant Hill. Even if we only sign him to a 10-day or what have you, he said he'd be contempt with that. Your Thoughts?
Otis: Kevin, Maybe he will bring Jordan with him! Come on people! Stop believing all the hype. Your are smarter than that!
From Matt (2/19): Dwight Howard was robbed in the dunk competition. It was obvious when the judges gave gerald green a perfect score for dunking over a table that they wanted him to win. They must have felt bad for the celtics, since it seems that they cant win at anything else. Just because diwghts sticker didnt stick with the judges doesnt mean that it didnt stick with the rest of the world. Make sure he knows that he is the champ in my book!
Otis: Matt, very well said...
From Fendi (2/17): Hey sir! As a Magic fan, should I be expecting a big move around the league and especially from you as the deadline approaches? You've done a great job with the past transactions within your span as a GM of this team. Keep up the good work. Also, are Dwight, Jameer, Ariza and Darko this team's core players?
Otis: Fendi, I believe there will be a few trades as there always are around the time leading up to the deadline. As for what we are going to do, in all likelihood, not much. However, we will look at everything. We made major changes at the deadline last year and now we just have to have patience and let things grow. We are very encouraged by some of the things we are seeing from our young team. Making a major change at this point will move us backwards. We liked our team at the start of the season and we still like our team. The goal is to win a championship and we believe we are on the right path. Go Magic!
From Andrew (1/31): Otis, I realize that this is an ask Otis forum but I am not writing to ask anything. I have something positive to share with you. I am writing to give you a report on Dwight Howard.
We met Dwight last night at a church in Orange city. He came to share his testimony with us and field our questions. Man, where do I start? Dwight was terrific. He was open, honest and so humble. At one point a little 3 year old girl shouted, "I love you" to Dwight. You know what he did? He stopped and asked, "Who said that to me". When she stood up for him to see her, he returned the love to her. That was so special. He was always alert and looked every one with questions in the eye. He interacted with everyone and even did an amazing impression from the Lion King and of Shaq. That was hilarious.
You guys did Orlando and the Magic justice by drafting him. I had the privilege of thanking him for being the good example that our children deserve to have. He thanked me as I was thanking him. I have met many Magic players over the years but none were as kind and humble as him. You should be proud of your decision to take him 1st in the draft and I personally want to thank you for giving my children a hometown "Hero" that is worthy of that title.
Thanks Otis!
Otis: Andrew, He is an amazing young man. Thanks for sharing.
From Tony (1/24): Mr Smith, Last night I was struck by the stark contrast in the pre-game preparation of the Dallas and Orlando teams. Dallas came out right at about 20 minutes before the game but Orlando didn't appear until almost two minutes later. Turkoglu showed up after the lay-up line was over. Howard then went to half court to the ball rack and proceeded to launch half court shots as his way of distributing the balls to his teammates. Hedo grabbed one ball and as if in a trance dribbled to half court slowly then weaved toward the basket putting up a funky layup grabbed the rebound and dribbled around again for another layup - and again - and again! In the whole warm-up if Turk took three regular shots to get ready for the game it was a lot!
Meanwhile a glance down to the other end revealed a Dallas team that was all business!
During the four minute lay-up line just before game time very few players took regular lay-ups or shots that would be ones that would be used in the game. At one point I counted twelve straight missed shots on the lay-up line! Why? Players floated through the air spinning wild shots that had no chance of going in. It looked like a bunch of guys out for a little Sunday fun on the court.
Meanwhile another glance to the other end - surprise! Dallas is all business.
It seems that very few Orlando players view pre-game warm-up as preparation for the game. Some of the vets, Tony, Grant, Jameer and a few others work on game type shots. Howard spends a lot of time at the foul line but why aren't Darko and Dwight helping each other in the low post - taking a few hook shots with each hand while the other provides a little opposition? Darko threw up a few 18 footers but mostly stood around.
I wonder which team raced out to a 16 point first quarter lead??
Players want to be treated as professionals. They probably don't want you and the coaches scrutinizing pre-game to evaluate effort and attitude. If they want to be treated well they must learn to respect the game and be constantly aware that each has been given a privilege to play a child's game for incredible amounts of money! I don't begrudge them the money. I am happy for them but in return I expect honest effort each time they step on to the court. In my mind players that are serious about winning use pre-game to get ready to play well! We do have some veterans on the team even though overall the team is incredibly young. Those vets do seem to respect the game but sometimes they must provide some vocal leadership when younger players seem to have lost their way.
Otis, I like this team. The patience you and the coaches are showing as the team develops is in my mind the way to build a consistent winner. Sometimes however the leadership group , management, coaches, and veterans must put their foot down and say an end to the foolishness and demand that the young players give the game the respect it is due!
Otis: Tony, Thanks for you. I agree with you 100 percent...and I could not have said it better myself.
From Chap (12/31): Otis, I would like to talk about Trevor Ariza and what he has brought to the Magic. He's a finisher, slasher, one that makes the most of his opportunity when he's in the game. Did you know that he was this good, and you think he can become an option 1 or 2 player in years to come because of his ability to attack the basket?
Otis: Chap, Let's talk Trevor Ariza...energy, effort, hard play, team guy. Trevor is a very young basketball player that should be talked about in the same breathe with our young core of Dwight, Jameer and Darko. He will be a very good basketball player if he continues to improve his game. His outside shooting has gotten much better over last season, but what he really has is very good basketball instincts. I don't know where the ceiling for Trevor will be, but it's still going up at this point.
Trevor was a BIG part of the Francis deal, not just a throw in as reported. Thanks for your interest.
Kevin (12/17): Otis, I really appreciate the fantastic job you've done in arranging this fantastic team that Orlando has this year, but I do have one question, When do you think we could see James Augustine?? With all the injuries on the team, he has actually been available for action. Do you think the only way he will play is if the game is a blowout? Or will he actually get some playing time this week?? Thanks, and Go Magic!!!
Otis: Kevin, It's a good and a bad thing that James got drafted by the Orlando Magic. He gets to watch some very good players at his position play and he can learn the game. We love what James brings to our team, however, we can't play them all. We tell the players all the time that they have a role with this team and they all do. Some of their roles include wat they bring to the court everyday - energy and effort. We have players on this team that play very limited minutes, and that's their role for this team. Their roles can change at the drop of a hat and they just have to be ready. I don't know when James will get on the floor, but he will. And he'll have to be ready...
From Matthew: (12/13): Otis, I'm a big Magic fan and have been very happy with the way you've changed the direction of the organization. Having said that I'd like to know why the Magic shouldn't go after Iverson? I can think of the standard responses but I'd like to hear it straight from you.
Otis: Matt, Even with our play of late, I still like the direction of our team. To add a player such as Allen Iverson changes up that direction. Trust me, we have the right mix of guys in our locker room. Thanks for your support.
From Kevin (12/13): Otis, I have been a HUGE magic fan through the good and bad times. I have not missed a Magic game this year, either at the game or on TV and I was wondering about Darko. He has his occasional spark, but most of the time he just seems to be lacking the energy and excitement that you need to produce consistently in the NBA. I feel if we could get 100% hustle from Darko, that we would be really hard to beat with Dwight alongside him. What are your thoughts?
Otis: Kevin, Enough said...I agree.
From Chap (12/8): Otis, what goes into scouting for the Magic when they're on the road. Also when do you start scouting for the draft?
Otis: Chap, I don't really understand your question in regards to scouting for the Magic when we are on the road. As for scouting for the Draft, that never stops. It's a year round process in which Dave Twardzik oversees six other members of our scouting department. I also take in games during the season on non-Magic game days. Thanks for your support.
From David (11/27): Otis, I'm not coach or nba expert but I don't think Darko is a post player. I think we should be running pick and roll with him and have Dwight to worry about post play. Darko can hit the jumper, but he struggles with the hook. What do you think?
Otis: David, Thanks for paying attention to Orlando Magic basketball. Darko is one of those special players that have the ability to play both inside and outside, depending on the line up on the floor. He is a very skilled 7-footer, but he is still learning how to play the game at a high level night in and night out. Darko is a long way from being a finished product...
From Seth (11/19): Dear GM Smith, In the last Magic vistory over the Bobcats, Dwight Howard passed you in made field goals as a Magician. Any comments?
Otis: Seth, Let's hope Dwight passes a few more people on that list. I figured he would pass me in his rookie season! Go Magic!
Adam (11/16): Please, Please, Please fill in Magic fans on the "JJ situation". We buy Magic tickets, buy your clothes, supported your draft pick of JJ, WE HAVE A RIGHT TO KNOW THE "JJ SITUATION". Why is he not playing? Is he hurt? Is he not performing up to NBA caliber right now? Thanks and go Magic!!
Otis: Adam, I really love your passion for Orlando Magic basketball. J.J. Redick is going to be a very good pro. There's nothing wrong with him - his back is fine, his foot is fine.
He started his pro career after missing four months of basketball, so he is having to play a bit of catch up. J.J. was also drafted by the Orlando Magic and we will make sure he has the best chance for success.
I guess we were a lottery team that now has the luxury of having some very good players that also play the same position as J.J. As we are telling J.J. right now, his career is going to be a marathon and not a sprint. We will get him on the floor very soon.
Adam, I hope this helps answer your question. Go Magic!
From Mike (11/01): Go get James White! You won't be sorry! He was let go from the Pacers yesterday! He's a high flying, aggressive player with an attitude that will put butt's in your seats. In two years he will be a top player!
Otis: Mike, As always, I love our fans and thanks for trying to help. But we love the 15 players we have under contract at this time. Thanks again and keep all those ideas coming. Go Magic!
From Tom (10/24): Hi Otis, nice job on assembling what looks like a deep team this year. I do have a question for you: Why is it that Darko seems to be relegated to the bench to start games? Even Battie seems to have suggested that with the all-world potential Howard and Milicic could have together, Darko should be starting. It seems to me that our best chance at having a breakout season as a team is Darko having a breakout season as a player. The trade for him and Arroyo is part of the reason fans have so much optimism for this season, and it would seem to favor us to start Darko. If we need more defense on the 1st team /offense on the 2nd, we could start him and Bogans and have Hill be the 6th man of the year. Just a thought. Thanks for taking time out of your day, and for giving Magic fans hope.
Otis: Tom, Thank you very much for your interest and concern with the Orlando Magic. How many things in your life have just been given to you? You are a nice guy...you deserve to have what everyone else in life has, I think we should just hand it over to you.
It's funny that sports is one of a few places that we expect things to be given, not earned. Darko is a very talented young basketball player and will have an impact on this team in the near future. However, if he is going to start and our team is going to have success, Darko will have to earn his starting job just like every other player. We are fortunate enough to have Tony Battie on our team to be able to play whatever role we need him to play.
To answer your question about defense with the first unit, it's not a one person issue...it's a team issue. We have to do a better job with team defense and we are getting better...mostly because of Tony.
Tom, thanks for being an informed fan.
From Marina (10/18): Hello Otis! In the 1988 Dunk Contest you missed a dunk. Why didn't you replace it?
Otis: Marina, That is just funny! Is this a test to see if this is really me? Well, it is! But to answer your question...the rules were different back then. I replaced all the dunks I could replace during the competition.
It was a fun time and a very good contest. Jordan, Nique, Clyde...and me! Crazy!
Happy New Year Magic Fans!
From Francisco (10/2): Mr. Smith, First I want to congratulate you as the new general manager. However, I feel a great disappointment in certain comment you made on a few T.V. interviews. Carlos is only 27 years old--not 30 like you stated. He made a great impact not only with the team but also with the Hispanic community. Apparently he is not your favorite and I don't understand why as he is very talented. You also commented that Carlos could be traded at any time. I do understand this is a business but when you have a true point guard that brings revenue to the organization and plays his heart out, it makes me wonder if you dislike Hispanics. Just remember, there is a large Hispanic community here in central Florida with a lot of power.
I hope that in the future that you treat Carlos with little more respect like he deserves.
Otis: Francisco, you have got to be kidding me. I think as much of Carlos as any other player on this team. Just relax! Understand this...I want to win - period. We traded for Carlos because we think he can help us win basketball games. As for the age of Carlos, it was my mistake. See you at the games!
From Jeremy (9/21): Hey Otis, ESPN's Chris Sheridan wrote that Carlos Arroyo would be the next breakout player in the NBA, citing his strong performance at the World Championship and his unique playmaking ability. He also writes, "if the Magic can find a way to utilize him in tandem with Jameer Nelson, he'll [Arroyo] have a huge breakout season." What's your take on this? Any idea who's going to be starting at point this season?
Otis: I'm so happy we are all reading Chris Sheridan's stuff. He must really know his basketball. Why read any of those other guys? (Just kidding) We are expecting very big things from Carlos, but if you are asking me to tell you who will start, that will be decided on the court in about a week. I love this time of year...it all happens on the court. Thanks for being a fan.
From Matthew (9/18): What are you going to do about the Magic's perimeter defense? With both JJ Reddik and Hedo Turkolu at 2 and 3, don't you think that opens a serious gap in the defense? Wouldn't it make sense to trade Hedo Turkolu and some other insentives for a guy more defensive minded, like a Rashard Lewis type. Hedo Turkolu already takes more shots a game then Dwight Howard, and I think with all the offensive fire power it would be beneficial in getting Dwight more shots.
Otis: Matthew, Thanks for your interest in Orlando Magic basketball. You sound like you have a pretty good basketball IQ. With that said, I know you know that basketball is a team game on both sides of the ball and coaches help coach players on their strengths and weaknesses.
Turk and J.J. are not the worst defenders I have seen on this team or in this league. They will work well with our defensive plans for the future. They both bring something to the table to help you win a championship. To Win a championship on any level in any sport, you have to have players to fit a role and understand the importance of the role to help his or her team win.
If you've noticed, the teams that win it all are not the teams that have the perfect player at every position. It's the team that figures out the definition of the world 'team' and have players that decide to play the role. Even that last man on a championship team has a role that's very important to the winning of that championship.
What I found most interesting about your comment is the player you selected to compare them to. How is his defense?
I always enjoy getting fan emails, so don't stop writing!
From Edwin (9/15): Hi Otis, God bless...What is your response to this statement made by ESPN's Mark Stein "One warning, though: Orlando is going to seriously regret not signing Milicic to an extension this summer. The way he's progressing, Darko's price is bound to keep rising"?
Otis: He might be right...and I hope so. It's a good problem to have... Thanks for the interest.
From Scott (8/30): Otis, you made the comment that Jameer has had the best summer. Could you elaborate?
Otis: Scott, Jameer is in the best shape of his life. He's worked on his game and he has shown his leadership by inviting his teammates to Philly for a seven-day mini-camp for team building and basketball. That's big stuff. Here's a question for you: are leaders born or are they made? He has leadership in him and it is coming out by the day. Thanks for caring.
From George (9/9): Otis, I was wondering if Orlando would be intrested in giving Shawn Kemp a try out this summer i think we could use an extra big man and he did ok in his days here in Orlando i think he could help the Magic.. Thanks good job!
Otis: George, Ha Ha! I hope that was a joke. If not, sorry! Thanks for the interest.
From Dunstan (9/8): Hey Otis, to me honest with you I was no longer a Magic fan since Penny gone. However, last season I saw magic made some deals that really impressed me. (excepted for waived Penny, I knew it's all about business, but I'm his fan) Anyway, I would like to ask some questions about Darko Milicic. As we could see from last season, He played tough on the court, he blocked shot, he slam dunk and not afraid any dirty works. But I think his body still too weak, do you have any thoughts can do with it? cuz I'm pretty sure that in 3 years time (if there's no injury or trade), he and Howard will become the best towers. Just tell me how does your plan about training Darko, please.
Otis: Dunstan, I too was a big Penny Hardaway fan when he played for the Magic. He had some of his best years here. But stay with us, good times are coming back soon. As for Darko, he has been working on his body, but keep in mind that he is still young and is growing into his body. As time goes on, you will start to notice his growth and development. Thanks for caring.
From Sharon (9/2): Otis, Stacey Augmon is apparently a free agent. Anything on whether he will be back with the team? By the way, thanks for resigning Bo!!!!
Otis: Sharon, One of the Magic's biggest fans, thanks for reading. I know you would like to keep all the players from last year, but that's not possible so Stacey will not be back with the team. As far as Bo, we need the energy and effort that he brings everyday. He didn't play a lot of minutes for us, but what he gave our big guys in practice is very hard to come by. He sees the bigger picture. It's all about winning. Thanks for your support through the years.
From Jack: (8/22): Does the Magic have a scout at the FIBA World Championships? Do you get game films so you can see how Dwight, Darko, and Carlos are playing?
Otis: Jack, Yes we have international scouts as well as (Assistant GM) Dave Twardzik to watch the games. We are excited about the three players in the world games and are expecting big things from all of them. Thanks for your email.
From Joe (8/22): Hey Otis, great job on putting the our team together for a playoff run! Have you seen the World Championship lately? What do you think about Arroyo and Howard games on it? If they keep playing like that, I see playoff this season! GO MAGIC!!!!!
Otis: Joe, We have three players in the World Games - Dwight, Darko and Carlos - and they are all having very good summers. I can't wait until the season starts! We are keeping this on the down low, but Jameer may be having the best summer of all. Thanks.
From Eddie (8/22): Hey Otis, i like the work you have done with the team, i was wonderin, espn.com says that keyon dooling is on the trading block, is this true and who are we looking at trading for, please get back to me, thanx otis, Eddie, GO MAGIC!!!!!!!!!!!!
Otis: : Eddie, While I like the work that ESPN does most of the time, sometimes they are way off. If you look at our roster, you can see that we are heavy at the guards - so they make guesses sometimes. However, I like our team and the depth we have in those positions.
At this point in the game, I have no one that's on the "trading block" - your words, not mine. Thanks for the interest.
From Rishaun (8/17): Hey Otis. I know that someone earlier this summer asked about going back to our throwback jerseys full time instead of just for Hardwood Classic Nights. Are there any plans for an alternate jersey (maybe black) for the current Magic uniforms? I think it would be a hit. Thanks and go Magic!
Otis: Rishaun, This is much to do about nothing. I'm not much into fashion. I care more about how our team performs on the floor - not what they are wearing. However, I will pass this on to our marketing folks who do care about wardrobe. Thanks for your email.
From Steve (8/16): Great news about Bo O.!! I’m somewhat confused about the status of Tony Battie. On March 22nd, 2006, you said he had signed a contract extension, but this website lists him as a free agent??? Without revealing terms and other private matters, do the Magic have Battie for next season barring the unforeseen??? Also, I haven’t heard much about Grant Hill’s progress at rehabilitation. Will he be able to start the season or is he still having issues???
Otis: Tony is not a free agent...we did extend him during the season last year. Grant's rehab is going well. We are expecting him to have a very good and full season. I can't wait for training camp. It's going to be fun. Thanks!
From Polly (8/14): Mr. Smith, I live in south Florida, but as an alum of Illinois, I was thrilled to see the Magic select James Augustine in the second round. How do you foresee James fitting into the Magic plans? And what are the chances of me becoming a Magic fan as a result? Thanks!
Otis: Polly, I think every team needs a James - someone that doesn't mind doing the dirty work by defending, rebounding and making hustle plays to help the team win. James will have to do all these things and then some to get on the floor, but the opportunity is there if he wants it.
I'm so excited about training camp. It's going to be a dog fight for playing time and the good teams have that everyday. When it's time to battle other teams, they pull for one another. We are so very close to having something special here. Hold onto your seats, it's going to be a good season. Thanks for the support.
From David (8/10): Hi Otis, Thanks in large part to your decision-making, this season’s Magic squad is the most promising we’ve had in a decade. Excellent work, Otis. Here’s my question: What kind of style of play do you think the Magic should have this season? I think that our greatest strength is the open-court game. Howard is a terrific finisher, and adding Redick should help spread the floor. We may need to become a better half-court team in a few years, but for now, I think we should let the team run. Thoughts?
Otis: David, In my mind, good teams find a way to get easy baskets - be it running the ball or set plays. I think this team will have the ability to do so many things because we are deep in every position and we have a team that can play different positions. Sometimes we will run and at times we will slow the ball down.
But you know when it comes to the playoffs everythings slows down and the good teams better be able to score in the half court. It should be a very fun season...I can't wait!
From Cameron (8/8): Question about next year’s salary cap room. I’ve read that the Magic could have $12-$15 million in cap space next summer because both Grant Hill and Darko Milic will be free agents. If Darko has a break-out year, he’s going to command top dollar. And if Grant stays healthy, he won’t be cheap either. So basically if the Magic want to lure a top free agent like Vince Carter or Rashard Lewis to Orlando, it means we’d have to let Darko and Grant walk away? Or can we sign the new guy with the cap room, and then come back and go over the cap to re-sign our current players? I hate the idea that we’d have to use all of our cap space just to re-sign our current guys and stay where we are. I’m really looking forward to adding that missing piece next year.
Otis: Cameron, In a word - "FLEXIBILITY". Stay tuned!
From Edwin (8/3): Hi Otis, I was wondering...will Darko be a starter this coming season??
Otis: Edwin, For this reason, training camp is going to be fun. He will have to come in and earn it - the other players are not going to lay down for him. At this point...we have no starters. I love training camp...I did as a player and I do as the GM.
From Billy (7/28): How about more information on Marcin Gortat? Is he coming back for camp or staying overseas?
Otis: Bill, Thanks for asking about Marcin. While we liked the progress he made over this past season, we think it's in everyones best interest for Marcin to play at least another season in Europe. We feel it's in his best interest to play and he will get more time on the court in Europre. Thanks again for your interest.
From Sharon (7/27): Otis, Thanks for the great job you and your staff are doing! I haven't heard anything about Bo Outlaw. Will he be back with us next season?
Otis: Hi Sharon. We are Bo fans too! Somethings just take a little more time. Thanks.
From Antwaun (7/25): Hello Otis, I serve in the Navy and I'm from Los Angeles. I have been a dedicated Magic fan since the Shaq and Penny days. Even when the home town Lakers won a title three times I still didn't abandon ship. I know that championships aren't won over night, But my question is how far away are we from contending?
Otis: Antwaun, First, thanks for staying with us through our lean years. I do believe happy days will soon be here again. How long will it take for the Magic to make a run at the title? It has already started. We have to continue adding good players to the team...and our young team continues to learn how to win. Stay with us as we continue to grow! Go Magic!
From Cedric (7/26): Hi Otis, I know that we just signed Bogans but i heard that Golden State might be interested in Ariza and would be willing to trade Mickael Pietrus for him. If Ariza ask for more money than you'd like to pay, would you think about doing that trade? I like Ariza a lot but i'd love to have Pietrus in Otown. Go Magic!
Otis: Cedric, While I'm a big fan of Pietrus, there's nothing to what you are hearing. We are very, very close to resigning Trevor. I haven't said this in a while, but stay off the net. Go Magic!
From JT (7/24): Have the Magic looked into free agent Scot Pollard as a possible addition to the team? I've read the team would like to add a frontcourt banger, and I think he fits the bill. He plays both 4 and 5, and brings a lot of energy off the bench. He also seems to be a team-first kind of player. Besides, every championship team always has that one guy who marches to the beat of a different drummer...
Otis: JT, While we like Scot and a lot of the things he would bring to the table for the Magic, we don't have any room on our team to add another body. We made lots of changes during the season last year. Thanks for your email.
From Darryl (7/24): Otis, are the magic thinking about trying sign Bonzi Wells, he could really help.
Otis: I have gotten emails similar to this one in the past. While I think Bonzi Wells is an outstanding talent, I don't think he fits into the direction this team would like to go at this time. Right now, our direction is to build around a young Dwight Howard, Jameer Nelson, Darko Milicic and Hedo Turkoglu. The kind of player we want to add to our team is very important. We all have to relax and let things develop. I promise we will continue to grow toward a championship! Thanks.
From Paul (7/24): Hi Otis, A magic fan from day one here. Things are looking bright down in 'Orlando for this season. I m not 100 percent on this but I thought when u traded francis last year in that deal if freed up alot of cap room for the team for a big run at some big names in the free agent market. I was hoping for a big name superstar to come in from free agency in the offseason. we are like one players away from being an elite team. Can we look for any action soon or did time run out?
Otis: Paul, thanks for your interest in Magic basketball. The cap room you are referring to is for the Summer of 2007. But more than the ability to sign free agents in 2007, it also gives us flexibility to continue to build our team the right way. Go Magic!
From George (7/21): otis, why wasn't Orlando intrested in Charlie Villanueva when he was on the shopping block? We could have given up something better than Tj Ford for him easily. The Bucks got a steal.
Otis: George, thanks for the interest. In the past when I get asked a question like this I would try to dance around the answer, but I won't on this one. The reason we did not offer up one of our young core players for him is really simple...we had no interest in him as a player for the Magic.
Just because a player is being shopped or traded doesn't mean that he would fit the direction we are trying to go. Charlie is a very nice young player, but who would we move for him today? And where would he play? Time and timing. By the way, I think that deal was very good for both teams involved. Thanks again.
From Lee (7/19): Hey Otis, Congrats on your promotion. When I was 11 years old my dad took me to Forrest High to see you play. I still remember how you dominated. I graduated from Forrest in 1988, I played baseball and one day at practice I asked coach Chipiletti if Stacy Poole was the best player he ever coached. Earlier that day Bobby Cremins had been to our school to visit him. Coach Chip said that Otis Smith was by far the best player ever to play at Forrest. He said Stacy wasn't in the same class with you. The next day Jim Valvano was at the school recruiting Stacy. You were my all time favorite NBA player. I got to play 1 year of baseball with Wilbur, he was a senior when i was a sophomore. Tell him Lee said Hi. Anyway there are a bunch of us westsiders who are extremely proud of you. You have always been a class act. Congrats again!! Later Lee W.
Otis: Lee, It's always good to get emails from my past, but it makes me feel really old when you talk about my Forrest High School days and coach Chip. I learned so much and enjoyed playing for him. But Stacy played with my younger brother Wilbur, and he thought Stacy was the better player. We both had very good careers and enjoyed Forrest High and Coach Chip. Tell all the westsiders I said hello.
Dave (7/10): Otis, I understand keeping Redick out of Summer league play, but can you also keep him out of the U.S. National team play this Summer? I’d hate to see him get injured trying out for the National team and then we get 3 salaried years and no playing years.
Otis: Dave, I'm sure by now you have seen the reports. We want J.J. to get off to a very good start to his career. So it's important that he rehab his back, at the proper pace. He is a warrior, but with that said, it is in his best interest not to compete...on any level until release by our doctor. We are taking thing very slow. Thanks for your interst.
From Matt (7/07): Otis, HUGE magic fan here from Rhode Island. Congrats on getting JJ, I really think that he will fit in well, despite what the critics say. My question to you is; I know it is hard to just go out and trade/sign a superstar, but are you looking at any free agents, or NBDL players to play a role for the team, such as Ndudi Ebi or Tierre Brown. Also, are you looking at any of the players who went undrafted in the '06 Draft like Taquan Dean or anyone else. Please wirte back, thanks alot Otis!!!
Otis: Matt, First let me say thank you for keeping the interest up in Magic basketball in the state of Rhode Island. We look everywhere to find players to fill our needs. We have scouts that are all over the minor leagues looking for talent. We want the best players we can find and sometimes they come from other leagues as well as Europe. Go Magic!
From Thomas (6/18): Otis, great job with the team so far. Please consider going back to the pinstripe uniforms full time. Everyone loves them so much (consider a poll on Orlandomagic.com to see if fans would agree). We have had 3 straight losing seasons since we made the change to the current uniforms. It's time for a face lift for the magic. We also hope the city finally approves a new arena.
Otis: Thomas, thanks for paying attention to Magic basketball. I wish it was that easy...just change the uniforms and we're off and running! Just kidding! I like the black pinstripes as well. I will check with our Team Operations Manager to see which uniform has the most wins. It's the people in those uniforms that make the difference. Go Magic!
From Paul (6/19): Otis, You said that Thabo was intriguing. Considering his strong workout recently in MN against Foye, Brewer, and Carney and from what you've seen, what is his draft range (where he might get drafted)?
Otis: Paul, Since we are in the heart of the Draft process, I don't know if it would be smart on my part to discuss projections of players so close to the Draft. Thanks for the support.
From Julian (6/6): Otis, how much of an advantage is it to have the Pre-Draft Camp held in Orlando?
Otis: Julian, I don't know if we have any advantage having it here. Not traveling is the biggest advantage for me (I slept in my own bed!). We conducted a workout of players not participating in the Pre-Draft, but we could have done that if the camp was held in any other place as well.
From minisper1 (6/4): Otis, Congratulations on your promotion and I pray God rains success over you like Joe Dumars in Detroit. I am proud of the Magic organization because they are building a team and not one man superstar show that can't win a championship (Wizard's-Arenas, Minnesota-Garnett, Boston-Pierce, Philly-Iverson,...the list goes on). I feel this team is one player away from being a championship contender. I also believe that Milicic and Howard, with a little fine tuning, can develop into a tandom resembling former Boston duo Robert Parrish and Kevin McHale but better. Jameer Nelson is a true PG. Ariza is the next Boris Diaw, Dooling is the next Vinnie the Microwave, Kasun is the next Chris Kaman. . .THIS IS JUST A SOLID TEAM THAT COULD RESEMBLE THE DALLAS MAVERICKS. Finally, Ben Wallace is an unrestricted free agent, would you ever consider bringing him back?
Otis: Thanks for your interest and analysis of the Magic. We like the direction our team is going as well. Keep following the team. It will be interesting to see what happens to Big Ben this summer.
From Jim (6/1): Mr. Smith, Why would we be looking at small forwards when you have the Turk,Trevor,(a young star) oh yeh and Hill maybe? Don't you see SG as a bigger need? But I trust you. You have done great so far. Just fill me in.p.s. please keep Nelson as the starter.
Otis: Thanks for your interest in the Magic. I have no idea where the interest in the small forward stuff comes from. We like the best player on the board at the time we are selecting in the Draft. Think collection of assests - not position of the players. Jameer will be a very good player in this league for a long time...he gets it!
From Julian (6/1): Otis, would you consider trading Fran Vazquez in an effort to move up in the Draft, or is he off limits?
Otis: Julian, thank you for your interest and knowledge of the upcoming Draft. We have been saying since we drafted Fran last year that he is an asset to us. So we would consider using an asset to gain better assets. Keep the faith, Otis.
From JBb20 (5/25): Otis, Congratulations on the promotion. I hope this year will even be better than the previous. Anyways, I was wondering if you by any chance are thinking of trading the pick for a veteran, or if you are set on Drafting another rookie? Also who are some of your favorite SG's in the NBA that might fit well with our team? I would think a player as JR Smith or Fred Jones. Both who are athletic, and very cheap. They both can shoot well, have NBA experience, and really would not demand the ball to much away from Nelson, and Dwight. Thanks for a reply. See you at the games!
Otis: Thanks. In our free agent/trades process, we have a lot of very good young talented players on the list. But only time will tell if we are able to get anything done. Stay with us, we need all fans. Thanks.
From Chris (5/24): Mr. Smith, Chris from Orlando. Let's trade are 11th pick and rights to fragile Fran Vazquez and move down in the draft and get Adam Morrison. Come on, make some magic:) This guy is a passionate old school basketball player, not to mention the guy can really shoot. Thanks Otis.
Otis: Chris, thank you very much for you thoughts on this upcoming draft and the passion you have for Adam Morrison. He is a very good talent. We will do all that we can to put a winner on the floor for years to come. That would include exploring options to move both up and down in the draft. As Al Davis would say, "Just win baby".
From Juan (5/20): Hello Mr. Smith. First of all congratulations on your promotion. I know you deserve it. I'm wondering who do you have eyes on right now for a center position beside Darko to help in the paint and for the shooting guard position at this moment? It would be great if we could have K.G. But I know also you guys are working with the salary cap. Thanks for taking the time to read this e-mail.
Otis: Juan, Thank you very much for your email. What is going on with all the KG comments? It must be the hot topic in the chat rooms! Where (if anywhere) is KG going? My guest is that he'll still be in Minnesota.
You have to give to get in a trade. What are you willing to give up? Stay with us...we will win.
From Vicktor (5/19): Otis, first I would like to congratulate you on your recent promotion. I was wondering if the Magic had any intentions of trying to aquire Kevin Garnett this off season and if by some miracle this would happen, would he play center or power forward.
Otis: Vicktor, thanks for your interest. I know our fans want more details on what moves will be made during the off-season. As much as I would like to comment, it's a little difficult to do over the Internet. I can tell you that we will explore ALL opportunities to put a championship team on the floor. I really believe our owner, Rich DeVos, should have a championship to add to his many other accomplishments. As for what position KG plays: where ever he wants...for the Timberwolves. Thanks.
From Cedric (5/18): Hi Otis. Congratulations for the GM position. Is it true that Vazquez is gonna play for us next year?? Thx go magic.
Otis: Cedric, it would be very nice if Fran Vazquez was to play for the Magic this upcoming season, but I don't see it in 2007. Our goal is to have him in a Magic uniform in the 2008 season. He is getting married this summer, and I don't know if she will allow him to make the trip this season. Thanks.
From S. Beal (5/17): It sure would be nice to get a shooter like J.J. Reddick in the draft to spread the floor for Dwight Howard. What if any is the interest do the Magic have in the Duke star?
Otis: S. Beal, We have some time before the draft on June 28 and there's a few players we like. I would say he could be one of those players we like, but it's still May. We like 15 others as well! Still early, but thanks for your interest.
From Scott (5/16): Otis, I've been a Magic fan from the beginning. I saw the first practices which I believe were at Stetson. Anyway, I have recently been transplanted in Philadelphia. While here I got a chance to watch Villanova play and really like Allan Ray. I know that he is only 6'2'' but he is quick, got great hops, and can shoot the 3-ball. With your need at shooting guard and if you end up picking at the 11 hole, would you consider taking this guy, or do you think he is going to have to play point in the NBA? Where do you think he may go in the draft?
Otis: Scott, I like the fact that our fans are knowledgeable about the up coming Draft. I think both of those young players out of Villanova (Ray and Foye) have a chance to play at the next level. As to where they will go in the Draft, it's too early to tell. It's also too early to tell who the Magic is going to Draft. There's still a lot of work to be done. Thank you for staying a Magic fan in Philly!
From Lefty (5/12): Papers in Puerto Rico are talking about Carlos Arroyo not being part of the Orlando Magic plans for the 2006-2007 season. Please tell me that is not true. I think this guy is perfect for this team and it will be devastating for the Hispanic community in Orlando if he is gone.
Otis: Lefty, I have been telling our fans for months not to believe everything you read in the papers. Carlos is still under contract to the Magic for a few more years and the point guard position is one we feel pretty good about - with Jameer, Carlos, Keyon and Travis. Stop believing everything you read. Thanks for your interest in (Carlos) oops! - the Orlando Magic.
From Julian (5/4): Otis, In a recent Sentinel article by Tim Povtak, he wrote: "Orlando has the rights to three second-round picks in the upcoming draft, but it's highly unlikely it will use all three." My question is why not use the last two second round picks on international players that may contribute next year or the following? We could address the shooting guard and power forward positions with the first round pick and first of the second round picks. Then take the best international players available.
Otis: Julian, Thanks for you interest. If we don’t use one of the picks, it will be deferred to next season. It’s a pick we got in a trade. As the draft shake out, we will have a better idea on how valuable the second round picks will be, so it won't be wasted.
From Dave (4/21): Otis, The NFL can sign players long term, but the contracts aren’t guaranteed. In light of the last six years with Grant, does the Magic have any type of safety clause in new contracts for perennial injured players? Or are the contracts somewhat standardized and governed entirely by the players union and the NBA office?
Otis: You sound like you have the makings of a GM, but don’t stay up worrying about that kind of stuff - that’s my job! Under the Collective Bargaining Agreement - a contract with the NBA and its players - we are limited to what we can and can’t do. Thank you for your interest in the Orlando Magic.

Marcin Gortat

Otis: Hawk, I am happy to see that there are so many knowledgeable Magic basketball fans out there. Marcin Gortat had a very productive season and he is very excited about playing for the Magic this summer. We use the Summer League to see how our young players have developed, so this summer, we'll have both Travis (Diener) and Marcin to anchor our team.
To answer your other question, we have two second round picks in this year's Draft and possibly a third. Thanks again for your interest. Go Magic!
Editor's Note: The Magic acquired the draft rights to Marcin Gortat (57th overall) from the Phoenix Suns on Draft night last year. This past year, he played for RheinEnergie Koeln where he averaged 9.2 ppg and 4.5 rpg while shooting 71 percent from the field.
From Toan (4/19): What are your thoughts on Joakim Noah? He has accomplished everything he can in college basketball by winning the national championship and tournament MVP. I have read that NBA scouts think he can legitimately be the number one overall pick. Obviously he needs to develop his body and offensive game more, but do you think he is making a good decision by staying in college or should he make the jump to the NBA while his stock is soaring?
Otis: Toan, I don't know a situation where I would say a college player should enter the NBA draft early. The more time they spend at the college level, the better their NBA game becomes because the players are ready for the next level. We then have to spend less time developing them both as basketball players as well as young men. With that said, I hope they all stay in college, but I also know that's not going to happen. But let me dream a little. Thanks for you interest in Magic basketball.
From Debbie (4/18): Otis, what are your plans on free agents this year? Are you going to spend some of the cap at the end of this season (if there is any, its not worth it wait next year) to get a free agent or save it for the 2007 free agents to get LeBron James or Chris Bosh?
Otis: Debbie, as always - this year being no different - the fit for our team is very important. So unless something makes sense for us, we may not be very active this summer. Looking at this year's list of free agents, we maybe better served waiting. Thanks for you interest in Magic basketball.
From Paul (4/13): Otis, What are your thoughts on J.J. Redick as a potential NBA player?
Otis: Paul, first let me thank you for your interest in the Magic. J.J. Redick will be a very good pro. He has a skil that can transfer to the NBA and that skill is shooting. He is a very good shooter with range, can put it on the floor and create. He's maybe the best shooter in this draft class. Thanks, Otis.
From Anthony (4/6): Otis, What are your plans for Trevor Ariza next season. I heard he was a free agent and it would be a huge Ben Wallace mistake if you let him walk. Keep this team together please!
Otis: Anthony, Thanks for your interest in the Orlando Magic. We like Trevor and think he has a future with the Magic. Right now, we are just letting the process take place. He is a restricted free agent, which means we could match any offer that another team puts out there. We won't bid against ourselves, but he knows of our interest to keep him here.
Otis: Rick, I stopped playing a while back, because my knees are too bad. I'm 42 years old, so there will not be a lot of jumping now. I'm paying for all the jumping I did back in my day. But if I had it to do all over again, I wouldn't change a thing. Thanks for asking. Otis
Editor's Note: Otis' high-flying days in the NBA included two trips to the NBA Slam Dunk Contest on All-Star Weekend. In 1988, Otis appeared in his first Slam Dunk contest while playing for the Golden State Warriors. He reached the semifinals that year with an elite group of individuals - Dominique Wilkins, Michael Jordan and Clyde Drexler. In 1991, Otis became the first Orlando Magic player to compete in the dunk contest. That was the year Dee Brown (now a fellow Magic front office employee) won the contest with his famous arm covering the eyes dunk.

Fran Vazquez

Otis: Jason, We continue to have communication with Fran and his girlfriend about the wonderful things Central Florida has to offer. But I don't think we have to sell Fran on Central Florida. At this point, he is going to have to get comfortable with coming to the United State as a whole.
His role on the team, was to be another big body that could be used in the low and high post. We would like for Fran to join our team as soon as possible, but he has to be comfortable or it will not work. Thanks for the interest in the Magic. Otis
From Fendi (3/21): Hey! Given that we are to target the free agency class of '07, is there any possibility of us using the cap we'll have during the offseason this year? will it be the MLE? And what are your thoughts on the 2007 Free Agency? Also, whats the update on Grant? Here's me hoping to see him retire as a Magic. thanks!
Otis: Fendi, We talk about the summer of '07 as being one that will give us flexibility to go after big name free agents. More than that, it give us the flexibility to go after the type of player we want to add to our team.
As for this summer, we do have the MCE that we can use if we so choose to add another piece. But we have to make sure the player we add is the right player.
As for Grant Hill, he is continuing to rest and rehab. We are taking things with him pretty much one day at a time, as we always have. My hope is to see Grant on the court next season, because when he is playing, he is still one of the best players on the court. Thanks for your interest in the Magic. Otis.
From Laleyy (3/15): Hi. I was just wondering, because I've heard so much talk about it...does Orlando plan on signing Mario Kasun for the 2006-07 season? Or has Darko possibly taken his role? Thank you - Laleyy.
Otis: Laleyy, We liked Mario when the season started and we still has interest in Mario, but to say Darko has taken his role would be incorrect. Darko filled a role which was left by Kelvin Cato. The door is still open for a role for Mario. As it stands today, we are still taking a wait and see with Mario. Thanks for your interest. Go Magic, Otis
From Daniel (3/15) :Hi Otis, Been a fan of the magic since the shaq and penny era. One question, why did you waive Penny, I know he’s in rehab right now but he’s still penny, the same guy that help the magic become the magic. All I’m saying is, with you guys honoring the past players it might be a good idea if you put him back, I don’t know exactly what happened and some are blaming him for the firing of coach Hill but that’s the past, there’s still a gaping wound in Orlando because of him but I do think that the people of Orlando is beyond that and its time for healing. Look at Grant Hill he’s injured but he’s still good, it may just go the same with Penny, they are both stars and more importantly they have talent. And I do like them both as a player when they we’re just new in the NBA. Daniel.
Otis: Daniel, Thanks for your interest in the Orlando Magic. The Penny Hardaway that we both new and loved, is not that player anymore. He was about 80% when we traded for him, and we just didn't think he would be able to help this season. So, the future of the Orlando Magic rest in the hand of some younger players in...Dwight, Jameer, Turk, Darko and some others...and we like the direction we are headed. Winning a championship is our goal, and I think those players gives us a good start. Go Magic! Otis
From John (3/9): hey Otis...lifetime fan here...i just wanted to say i think youve done a great job so far...much better management this year than we had last year..anyways my question is this....what kinda plans do we have for Ariza..since coming from new york he hasnt had much playing time...the word is that he is a defensive stopper....do you think he and Stevenson could team up well on the court and help shut down scorers such as Lebron or Kobe? Thank you, John Koepkey
Otis: John, Trevor is a different type of player than any we have had on our team this season. He can defend the basket, but he also can get to the basket better than most...and a great finisher. Shooting is not what it will be in the future. Players become better shooters as they mature, so he will get better in that area. He is a special kid. You will see what Trevor can do on the court soon. Another young player...only 20 as well. Go Magic! Otis
From Dave (2/23): Otis, With the enormous shift toward a Dwight oriented team, are you concerned about putting too much pressure on him. I call it the Pedestal factor. Put ‘em on a pedestal, boost their ego too much, and down we go as a team. Didn’t work when the Magic became “Penny’s” team. Didn’t work when T Mac was the “Man”. These guys still put their pants (albeit long ones) on one leg at a time.
Otis: Dave, Thanks for your concern, but I think the next time you have an opportunity to meet Dwight, just introduce yourself, and you will see a different person. Not that those others mentioned are bad people, but he is a special person. Also, we are not putting the weight of the world on a young 20-year-old. What we are doing is clearing the way for him to grow as a player. Thanks for your support, Otis.
From Scott (2/18): Otis, I have been a Magic fan since game 1 against the New Jersey Nets back in 1989. I was a season ticket holder for the first six years through the glory days. I even had the opportunity to go to the NBA finals vs Houston. My comment is this: Every single night if we had a winning team with Shaq and Penny or a team starting out with players such as yourself, Reggie Theus and Scotty Skiles, the O-Rena (TD Waterhouse Center) was electric. I have seen a turn however that sickens me. I have been to several games in the past three years more specifically against Philadelphia, Detroit, and Miami and was devastated to witness that there was more excitement rooting for the other team. I do not remember it being like this even when Jordan was at his prime with the Bulls. I know that everyone has their favorite team but it is disheartening when they all come out to root against the Magic in our home building. (Kind of takes away from the HOME COURT ADVANTAGE.) My question is how do you guys as an organization feel about this and other then winning and re proclaiming ourselves as a dominant powerhouse in the East, what is the plan to fix this? PS. When can we retire a Jersey? Maybe Scott Skiles, Nick Anderson, or even yours!!! Thanks, Loyal fan since day one win or lose - Scott
Otis: Scott, Fans are funny, but they are just like you and I - we want to hang our hats next to a winner. In order for this to stop the Orlando Magic must win! And win big! Continue your support of the Orlando Magic. Thanks, Otis
From Justin (2/16): Hey its Justin from WV, Longtime Magic fan here. Is there any chance of getting Fran over here for the 2nd half of the season? If so, is the Magic interested? Is he interested? Also I have to give props on the Darko and Arroyo trade. I think that was a great trade. Arroyo really impressed me when he go to play in Detroit. I think he was on a GREAT basketball team though. Is there any thought of trading Grant Hill to a contender? Thanks for answering my questions. Keep up the good work.
Otis: Justin, You are asking all the right questions. There are no plans for Fran to come and play for the Magic this season. He is playing for a team in Spain and playing well. Although his team is not having very much success, he is playing well. The hopes is for him to come next season, but If he doesn't we retain his rights forever. We liked Carlos Arroyo as well as Darko Milic. They both just need to play. I think Carlos will have a bigger impact on this team than people believe. As far as trading any of our players, we continue to explore and evaluate the team and will do what is in the best interest of the Orlando Magic basketball team. Winning a championship has to be our goal, anything else is not good enough. Thanks for the support, Otis.
From Paul (2/17): "I'm so excited, that I just can't hide it. I'm about to lose control but I think I like it." Great job, guys! We pick up two young, talented guys that are great pieces to build with around Dwight. Excellent. Hopefully, one more deal is in the works to further improve our overall situation. I'm starting to "believe" again. Paul
Otis: Paul,Thank you very much for you continued support of the Orlando Magic. We will continue to work to build this team to compete for a national championship. Winning has to be the bottom line. Let's talk more about winning a championship in the future. That's what we have to believe in. Thanks, Otis
From Michael (2/14): Hey there Otis. I am sure you are inundated with a million questions, so I will try to keep it brief. I realize he is a rookie, but it seems to me with our inconsistencies from the guard position, Travis Diener could be a nice addition to our depth problems, especially with Jameer's status up in the air. Since we seem to be heading in the direction of another season of "rebuilding" it may be nice to get him some meaningful playing time. Can you speak to that? Thanks, Mike...Magic fan since '98!
Otis: Michael, Thanks for you interest in the Orlando Magic. We like Travis a lot and he is a big part of the future of the Orlando Magic. Travis will get plenty of time with the Magic and when he gets in, it will be because he has earned it. I know you have been watching the latest reports on the trade. We added another point guard to add to our depth at that position. We are still making strides to improve the team, and have not given up on this season. With that said, Travis' playing time won’t change much this season, but the off-season will be big for Travis. Thanks, Otis
From Brian (2/6): Otis, is there anything new to report on the arena issue? I haven't heard anything about this in a very long time. From what I have read in the past, it seems to me renovating the Waterhouse is the only viable option since it doesn't seem likely the local city/county governments are going to be willing to spend the $250 million an NBA arena costs these days. Yet I've heard in the past from the Magic that renovating the Waterhouse isn't practical. The impasse the organization seems to be at with the city/county makes me nervous. I know the DeVos family says they are committed to remaining in Orlando, and I believe them when they say that. But I also realize that "the bottom line" will ultimately dictate the future of this franchise, as it does in any other business. Is there anything new with this issue that can give us hope that something will eventually be done? Thank you.
Otis: Hi Brian. There's nothing new to report at this time, other than we are continuing to have dialogue with community leaders in regard to Orlando's facility. At this time my focus is on putting the best possible team on the floor.
From Julian (2/2): Do we have any intention of signing someone to a short term contract until either Hill or Nelson become healthy?
Otis: Julian, It would be nice if we could just add a player whenever another goes down, but that not the way the system works. We are allowed to carry up to 15 players on our roster, including the injured players. With that said, unless we release some on our current roster we could not add another player. I share your concern as it relates to the injuries of our players. It will get better. "Go Magic", Otis
From Daniel (2/1): Hello Mr Smith. The Orlando Sentinal has a comment section, where as, fans are coming out of the woodwork with strong ideas and suggestions as to the play and direction of this team. As of late it has been a sad state, as to, a team consistently under .500. Their lack of aggressiveness. Lack of team chemistry. One man stars instead of team play. Players whom do not know how to screen out or block out under the basket. Players whom have stayed out for long periods of time, some out most of their contract terms only to play well for other teams. Please sir this has come common place in this team and the league. Years back players gut it out to win a championship. Whats up. Is it because of all the millions they get.Their put on a pedestal. I believe so.
When these players step out on the court they should be ready to play long before gametime. No "Eye of the Tiger" I haven't seen it. I see them wondering around not knowing their positioning.Poor timing. It's obvious.
Let me say to you sir. if a corporation does not meet it's criteria as to results in which they project as to a positive outcome to the bottomland in their endeavors and they don't meet that projection, then changes are made. You say to stay the course, but if the results don't meet the criteria then management needs to be strong and meet those challenges
Look at theses championship teams. Standards for the Magic should be no less than those at the top. Still pieces need to be put into place on this team. I believe a couple of moves could catapult this team forward. The status quo is not working. We need SOME change to be Championship bound. This magic fan has been starving for a .500 plus year since the very beginning. I can only say I'm not getting any younger. Just get it done! period
Otis: Daniel, Thanks for your input and insight, some very good observations. I wish more people share your thirst for winning. Thanks. "Go Magic", Otis
From Sharon B. (1/21): Otis, I would like to thank you for taking time before the game to take this photo with my son and my daughter who both enjoyed the Magic Game on Wednesday Night. My daughter Tiffany performed with the Junior Dance Camp said "It was something that she will never forget." Thanks again for the great shot! Sharon B.
Otis: Sharon, You are very welcome. You have very nice looking kids You waited very patiently for me to finish taking pictures with the other students. We have more games, so please come back. Otis (P.S. You should have told me my tie needed to be fixed!)
From Marion (1/16): Otis, I believe you will not find a bigger Grant Hill fan then me. I have been following him since his days at Duke. Even when we had T-Mac on our team, I was still a bigger Grant Hill fan. I say all this to get to my point. Although I am a die hard Grant fan, its obvious to me that his best days are behind him. He can not stay healthy! He has hardly played for the Magic since we signed him to that hugh contract. And now he is talking about retiring. I do not have the basketball skills or knowledge that you have, but I do know when its time to let a one time good thing go. Why not trade him now while he still has some value, Versus letting him sit on the injured list collecting a big paycheck week after week, month after month, year after year. Anybody decent is better than Grant hill at this point in his career.
Otis: Marion, I don't know if there is a bigger Grant Hill fan than me. I think the person that is Grant Hill is better than the basketball player, and rather he plays basketball or not he is a stud. He can do whatever he wants to after basketball. The truth of the matter is when he is playing he is still one of the best players on the floor, and when he is not playing he is providing leadership to a very young Dwight Howard and Jameer Nelson. With that said, he has value for the Orlando Magic. Keep the faith. Go Magic! Otis
From Jordan (1/15): Otis, I am sorry to hear about what recently happened with Steve Francis, however I do feel it was necessary to do what was done. Something was visibly wrong with him over the last couple of games. I have two questions for you: How is Dwight Howard reacting to the negative publicity? Also, Weisbrod mentioned after the Mobley trade that it would help the magic this upcoming summer, as Christie, Cato and Battie are all free agents. Approximatly how much money does Orlando anticipate having and what kind of player will we be able to go after this off-season. Thanks, and hopefully the Magic can turn things around soon! Jordan
Otis: Jordan, Thanks for the interest in the Orlando Magic. Dwight has been very good about what's happening if anything he is learning that no one person is bigger than the team. As far as the cap room we would have with the expiring contracts in summer of 06, it was a bit overstated. What we are committed to do is using what we do have to get a better basketball team on the floor and it will get better. Again thanks for your support. Otis
From Paul (1/12): Otis, It is easy to run one of these message boards when things are going well. Interestingly, you've disappeared for about a month now. Are you "committed" to this (your fans) when things are tough with the team? What is your assessment of this team? What is your plan? Is Steve done with the Magic? Give us some hope and information either through this message board or through the media. Paul
Otis: Paul, the truth of the matter is I love talking to the fans when I can, but it's a lot of people reading, but not a lot of people writing. It's hard to talk on the Internet about transactions. Believe it or not Magic fans are not the only readers. Steve is very much a part of the Magic team and we look forward to his return to action. The team has to be greater than the parts or it never works. I really do believe that the Magic team and Steve will be better in the long run because of the action we had to take today. Thanks, Otis
From Eric (1/10): Otis, I was wondering if you had anything on Fran’s progress overseas, and do you know if there is a website that would post his stats, news, things of that nature. Thanks O!!!
Otis: Eric, That's a pretty good idea you had, so what we will try and do throughout the season is post his stats. He he is doing ok as a player, 10 points, 8 rebounds, 2 blocks in 23 minutes per game. His team, however, is not playing very well. We are keeping a close eye on his progress. Thanks.
From Paul (12/17): Otis, what makes Francis a better starter than Jameer? It seems that Meer has a better shot, is quicker, and plays better defense. Okay, Francis can post and generate some double teams. But is that worth 11 million dollars more per year? And to be honest, Diener looks like the best pure point on our team but obviously needs some growth. Why not leverage Francis for a starting PF (Harrington, Martin) or scoring SG (Pierce)?
Otis: Paul, thanks for your interest in the Magic. I agree with you that Jameer is becoming a very good point gaurd, and will be for sometime. Its not who starts the game the games, but who finishes. It's very important for the coach to manage his team, using the players in the best situation that will give the Magic the best chances to win each game. As an organization, we will do what is in the best interest of the team to make sure we have the best chance for winning - and not in the short term, but for the long haul. Again, thanks. - Otis
From Susan (12/14): Hey Otis, I am hearing all the Ron Artest trade rumors. Is it possible for the Magic to possibly make a offer and get the defensive player?
Otis: Susan, thank you for your interest in the Magic. We will do what we think is in the best interest of the team. When players like Artest demand to be traded publicly, it does a few things to the team in which he's a member such as it devalues him so that his team will not get the true value for him as well as it hurts the NBA as a whole. Did we make a call? Well, yes. At what cost would you entertain an offer for a player like Artest? Well, I don't know, but you have to let them know you have interest. Just keep in mind sometimes 2 plus 2 doesn't equal 4. Thanks, Otis. "Go Magic"
From Kyle (12/05): Hey Otis, I'm a lifelong Magic fan who has been sorely disappointed by some bonehead moves from the Magic's front office over the past few years. Trading Cuttino Mobley, Darrell Armstrong, Ben Wallace, Tracy McGrady, Mike Miller, Chuky Atkins, Corey Maggette and the list goes on. We also (with the exception of Dwight Howard) haven't drafted well at all. Jeryl Sasser, Fran Vasquez, Steven Hunter, Reece Gaines just to name a few. Oh yeah, we also let some guy named Shaquille O'Neal get away from us. Not sure if that name rings a bell or not. Yet in all this, we've still managed to hold on to Pat Garrity. I dont mean hate on the guy, but over the last two years I haven't seen him do much of anything. I always heard that there a lot of teams that would want to get him via trade. Why haven't we gone and gotten anybody good in exchange for him? Lifelong and Frusterated Magic Fan, Kyle
Otis: Kyle, You have a lot of history with the Orlando Magic. I wonder if you know that every team in this league have players they feel they let get away. I know you know if the Magic don't move some players, they wouldn't have others. I can't and won't talk about deals in which I have no knowledge. As for trading any of the Magic's current players, it's still too early. We have been bitten by the injury bug and won't know how good the team could be until the end of the month when the last of our injured guys return (Dooling). Wait and see before we deal. Go Magic! - Otis
From Nick (12/03): Hey Otis, it's Nick again. I just want to say that you've done a good job with the Magic this season, and even though we are without our first round draft pick, we are playing well. I was just wondering, when we acuired Jameer Nelson from Denver, did we give up a future first round pick? And when does Denver take the pick from us?
Otis: Nick, thank you for hanging with us during our injuries. It's going to be fun to watch in the next few week as we get healthy bodies. When we made the trade for Jameer it was for a future first round pick, but it was Washinton's pick from the Brendan Haywood trade a few years back. I hope this helps. We still have this year's pick. Go Magic! - Otis
From Nick (11/14): Hey Otis, I'm a big Magic fan who lives in New York. I have been reading the newspapers recently and there are rumors saying that we would trade Francis for Marbury. I think this would be a horrible trade, because Francis is great, and Marbury is not a good pg. Also, when is Howard going to get that contract extension?
Otis: Nick, I always feel bad when I tell people to stop reading, but stop reading that stuff. How much truth can it be? Look who wrote it. As for Dwight, are you ready today? Would you like to see what he is going to grow into? Dwight has a few years left on his current contract. And I promise you, the Orlando Magic are not going to allow him to leave. Go Magic! Otis
From James (11/11): As you all "intelligent" administrators in the Magic organization already know, we are really lacking a SG. So, please stop acquiring undersized shooting guards and players that don't help us that much (i.e. Keyon Dooling). I really think that you should SERIOUSLY consider Latrell Spreewell. He wouldn't cost too much (but hey, he's gotta have enough to feed his kids) and he can still fill it up--not to mention is a solid defender. Yes, I know, you think he is a head-case and won't help the team chemistry and what not. Guess what, if our team chemistry is terrible and we still make the playoffs, who's going to care? Anyway, I don't think we can't get much worse (and I'm a die-hard Magic fan). Plus, you don't win games by being nice. From, the most loyal Magic fan on earth, although this email would say otherwise (James).
Otis: Chemistry. Know the players you are trying to put together. Team building has to be about more than points, rebounds, and assists. On paper, from where you sit, it looks like a "slam dunk" - don't be fooled. I wonder why he is still out there? Thanks for being a fan, Otis
From Mark G. (11/06): Hi Otis. I have been a Magic fan from the beginning of their existence. I am curious why Brian Hill does not give Travis Diener more of a chance since he showed such promise in the summer leagues? I think his 3-point shot is needed with all the injuries right now.
Otis: Mark, Thanks for your interest in the Magic; I will answer this question as if I was talking to Travis. It’s a long season and we have played 3 games. Just relax and learn as much as you can, so that when you get your chance you are ready. Mark, there are so many parts to the game of basketball. Travis is working harder than anyone to learn as much as he can, so that he can help us in the future. Go Magic! Thanks, Otis
From Cedric (11/01): Hi Otis. In you I trust. Could you tell me if there is any truth in this? 'Before the New Orleans/Oklahoma City Hornets traded center Jamaal Magloire to the Milwaukee Bucks, one of the teams that they talked with was the Magic. The Hornets wanted forward Hedo Turkoglu and the Magic's unconditional first-round draft pick, which the Magic were unwilling to give'. Keep the good job. Thx and take care, Cedric
Otis: Cedric, Thanks for the passion you share with the Orlando Magic. We did have some dialogue with the Hornets, but nothing of substance. What they wanted we had no interest in doing. Thank you, Otis.
From Mark (10/31): Hey O, How’s it going this is Mark R again. I have a new question for you. Everybody talks about the next Michael Jordan. Since you played in the Jordan days with the Airness, is there any player out there right now who you think is even close to touching Michael Jordan’s skills. And if so be specific.
Otis: Well, here you go - as specific as I can be. NO, not even close! You have a lot of talented players in this league, but none comes close. He made the players around him play at a different level. Winning was the most important thing to him. Not sure how many players in this league understand that yet. Thanks, Otis
From Mark (10/11): Hey O, this is Mark R. I have a question that pertains to yourself. My question is do you miss the stardom that came along with playing in the NBA, or are you content with leading a semi celebrity life. No disrespect meant by this statement, I think you are one of the greatest underrated players ever. Go Magic
Otis: Well, Mark, don’t know if I ever looked at it as being a star. I played basketball and had the best time doing it, so what I’m doing now is not that much different. I love my job, much like I love playing the game of basketball. Just think about it, I’m the assistant GM for a team that I played for, how cool is that…Otis
From Theo (10/10): Hey Otis I'm a Magic fan from Greece (I'm not kidding) and during the Eurobasket 2005 (which I was happy to see my national team win) I was able to see Mario Kasun and Fran Vasquez in action and I have to say I was impressed by Fran's game, his mid range shot and rebounding in particular. Seems like you were right to pick him ;). Do you think Kasun will be seeing minutes this season? Finally are the Magic scouts watching for Greek players? There is a lot of talent but they seem to be overlooked in drafts where most European players picked are either French or from Eastern Europe.
Otis: Theo, we are expecting Mario to have a big year for us. The one thing I know for a fact is that Brian Hill will play whoever is going to help us win games. We scout all over the world looking for the best basketball player that can help the Orlando Magic win basketball games. If you notice, we have a theme - that is winning is the most important thing. Thanks, Otis
From Jack (10/7): Hey Otis. I heard there's a really tall guy playing rec league ball in Uzbekistan who has absolutely no interest in ever leaving his village, much less playing in the NBA. He sounds perfect for the Magic in 2006...especially if we have a lottery pick!!! Signed, Season Ticket Holder Who Is Tired Of Hearing How You Wouldn't Have Done Anything Differently
Otis: Jack, It's good to know you have jokes. Thanks, Otis
From SerafiniSM (10/8): Otis - first off, thanks for taking the time to answer our e-mails. I hope you continue to take the time once the season starts. What's your take at this point on the point guard position? I truly believe Steve is better off at the two - he is just too turnover prone to be reliable running the point. Is it really a good idea to move him back and forth between the point and the two? Jameer should be running the point and Dooling brought in for that change of pace and defense. I don't think I can stand another season watching Francis throw the ball away!
Otis: My thoughts on who starts at point does not matter that much - it's up to Coach Hill. What I see is the point position is the best we have. We are deep and we can change the pace depending on who's playing. Steve is a basketball player, and he will do whatever it takes for the Magic to win basketball games, and that's what it's all about - winning. Thanks, Otis
From Aaron (10/9): Otis, since Deshawn Stevenson is going into the Preseason as the starting shooting guard, is he the favorite to win the job at the beginning of the season? Or is there still a battle going on? How much of an impact do you see Travis Diener making this season? Thanks.
Otis: Aaron, at this point, I have no idea who will start at what position. It's too early to tell. New team, and a new attitude and a new coach - so we will have to see who comes out on top. Thanks, Otis
From Sam (10/6): Hey Otis do you think the Magic would be interested in George Lynch he say’s he wants to go to a contender I am sure to you and myself I believe the Magic are a contender. I know we have 2 small forwards but just to be safe Lynch would not be bad, let me know what you think. One more comment I would like to see Jameer a starter and Keyon coming off the bench to change the pace, but I am just fan actually a very emotional fan I take it to heart when they laugh about the Magic I am ready to fight as if I am on your payroll. Tell the players let’s kick some butt this year LAUGH NOW CRY LATER. GO MAGIC!
Otis: Sam, thanks for hanging with us in the thin years, but we are on the way up now. As for George Lynch - who I did like at some point in his career - I don't think, at this time, he would be a good fit, with having 3 small forwards already. And it’s the position that's long in the tooth for us - that we should take on another that's up in age. As for J starting, I don't now, but what I do know is it might be hard to keep him off the floor. He is a winner PERIOD, and he makes teammates better. See you at the "HOUSE". Thanks, Otis
From Mark (10/3): Otis, it seems never ending all the talk about player acquisition and draft issues. But I love the concept of time with players, not only does it allow players to build on court relationships which gives them confidence and faith in each other but it also allows a brotherhood and family atmosphere to be developed. Sure it's an organization, and a player could be traded at any time, but realistically, dynasties in sport are built on the fact that players (& staff) stick together and fight as one - that is the most recurring theme in all great teams. We saw that with Chicago, no one bailed on MJ when he went through tough times. Likewise when Rodman went AWOL, he was pulled into line by his brothers. There was a sense of belonging and ownership amongst the players and coaches. I really hope we can build that at this team. So my question, how are the guys doing? What's the feeling amongst the players? If they dont know it yet, make sure they hear it from the mouths of the fans. We're behind you guys no matter what. We're proud that you guys represent us. Good luck!
Otis: Mark, thanks for having interest in our players, they are great. We are very excited about the chances this team has this season. The theme of winning is talked about often - and winning now. We have a very good group of players that you should get to know. I think you will have opportunity on the Magic broadcasts to get to know them better. Go Magic! Otis
From Jeremy (10/2): Hey Otis, the offseason seems to be moving along well, but one quick question. With the need for another big and the dilemma going on in Chicago would it be possible to at least offer Eddy Curry a 2 or 3 year contract for the same amount he would get with the Bulls but minus the whole DNA test thing. The chance of landing him cheap would be worth the risk. Thanks.
Otis: Thanks, Jermey. But it wasn't worth the risk for us, after the risk we took with Grant Hill in years past. Not sure of his health is an issue...didn't want to put or team at risk. Thanks for being a Magic fan. Otis
From Rockey (10/2): Otis, I have been a fan of the Magic since their first game. It has just about killed me to watch the team lose so many games the last few years. I will always be a Magic fan, but let's get this team going, what ever it takes.
Otis: Thanks, Rockey. Will do. This is the season. Otis
From Andrew (9/29): Hey Otis. I'm a big Magic fan, but unfortunately don't get to attend much of their games. =( So I depend on Sunshine and UPN to see the team play. But I looked at the recently released TV schedule, and there are 4 games not going to be televised!! I remembered last season there were like 2 games that weren't on TV. Why are there games left off?!? Are they shown on NBA TV or something? Help! Also, I remember reading somewhere that last season, there was a new team policy forbidding the players of wearing headbands. Was the a Weisbrod rule and is that still in affect for this year? Thanks!
P.S. Liked the Bo pickup! Wish we could pick up DA too.
Otis: Andrew, we will continue to have a no headband rule and it has nothing to do with John Weisbrod, its that most guys don’t know how to wear headbands, so they look silly, and they serve the purpose of the headband, which is to prevent sweat form getting in you eyes. Hope this helps. Otis
From Bob (9/30): Otis, thanks for a great column. Now that we have half of the 'heart and hustle' boys back (Bo), what about the other half (Darrell)? Watching Bo and Darrell on the floor again would do wonders for the fans.
Otis: Thanks, Bob for your interest in the Orlando Magic. Bo will be a big asset to team having been around the league a few years. His leadership will do wonders for our younger players as well. Thanks, Otis
From Matt (9/29): Otis, I just wanted to say that while I haven't been thrilled with most of the decisions that have happened this summer, I do want to complement whomever did the scouting for summer league players. They compiled a number of guys that I think are quality players that just need the right opportunity. So whomever is responsible for Matt Freije, Ken Johnson, Terrence Morris, and Felipe Lopez deserves a bonus, or at least a pat on the back. They actually let me know there is some competent basketball minds in the Magic organization. Now I know those players are most likely training camp fodder, but I wouldn't have a problem with any of them rounding out our bench and pushing out a guaranteed player if need be. I'm not advocating turning any of them into a starter a la Britton Johnson (this would be the whole lack of competent minds thing I was talking about), but I think they could provide something off the bench in limited minutes for the tail end of the roster. At the very least, you should end up with better training camp competition and that can't be a bad thing, and at best you get a couple servicible guys at cheap contracts. Hopefully the coaching staff will give these guys a legitimate shot to show what they can do.
P.S. Even if you decide not to use this for your mailbag, I hope you'll at least forward it on to anybody that took part in those decisions (everyone likes hearing compliments about a job well done), and if it wasn't you that brought those guys names up, make sure to listen to the people that did. I think they have a real good pulse on potential diamonds in the rough. Now let's get to working on pulling some good trades in the future to get guys like Nazr Mohammed dirt cheap while they're rotting on Atlanta's bench and start reaping the rewards of proper scouting.
Otis: Matt, thank you for your support. See you at TD Waterhouse. Otis
From Cameron (9/28): Otis, thank you for taking the time to respond to the fans’ questions. I love your bluntness. :) I upgraded my seats this year and really believe the team will take some positive steps forward. The last couple of years have been hard, but I like the team we have. (Sure I would love to have Sean May right now instead of no first rounder, but I digress.) If things click with the players we have, I could see us surprise the league like the Suns did last year. They went from being mediocre to adding a good point guard and everything falling into place. We have our Amare clone (Dwight) and hopefully can get strong guard play from Steve. Grant will take big steps forward, and I think Cato will have a career year for obvious reasons. With the much better coaching staff we now have, I really could see us surprising the league. Right now it pains me that there are two opinions about the Magic in the national basketball community. Some see the Magic as inconsequential, and to the rest we’re a laughing stock. Did you see the chat on ESPN today? Out of 100+ questions answered by all three ESPN analysts, there was only one about the Magic. Here it is:
Jeff (Orlando): Wow. A whole chat transcript and not a single Magic question. So I'll ask! Ok, so ORL got spurned by their draft pick and the only splash they made was signing Dooling to half the MLE. Is making no noice and instead letting what you have grow a good thing in the Magic's case?
Chad Ford: The Magic are a mess. Are they "letting things grow" with the one good young player -- Dwight Howard-- on their roster or are they a veteran team that's wasting away the last two or three years that Grant Hill has left. I think they overpaid Dooling, made a major mistake with Vazquez and will have problems with Stevie Francis if they don't let him dominate the ball. In other words, the Magic probably don't deserve much of a mention.
Here’s to making all these “experts” eat their words this year! We gotta get the respect back. We gotta get the fans back. We gotta win.
Otis: Cameron, sorry, I don’t read that stuff, but I’m happy for all that does. It keeps the interest in basketball at a high level. I would very much like to make a comment about the so-called national media but I can’t over the internet! The truth of the matter in most writer eyes is if you are not trading players every summer, you are not doing anything. That is when you won 36 games. I like this team and the draft pick. Success is coming. Patience. Even if this team does not win, which it will, I’m convinced we did that right thing by not continuing to move players year in and year out. I think the coach will make a difference, then evaluate what we've got, and change pieces. By the way, it's not a new formula. That's what all teams in all sports do. You have a plan and you work that plan. Thanks for the support. Otis
From Norm (9/28): Otis is there any truth that Bo Outlaw is coming back? If so, that is a good move. Gotta luv BO!
Otis: Norm, its all true...he's back!! Thanks, Otis
From Drew (9/26): Hey O, thanks for getting to our emails. I must admit that I've had my doubts about how things will be, but I can really appreciate the need to bring the same guys back so we can finally see our team gel. What is up with the Bo Outlaw reports? Could it be? This is a guy who never quits and gives all that he has. Is this going to happen? One other question. Any BIGS in your sights or are you done with free agency? P.S. Thanks for bringing Brian Hill back. Now we have a real coach. Just hope the boys are willing to listen and learn. He has a lot to teach them. Thanks O.
Otis: Thanks Drew, we are excited about the upcoming season. Adding Bo gives us an experienced player that can assist with the growth of Dwight. It will be a fun season but not without its ups and downs. The guys have been working very hard this off-season. It will be a tough training camp that will set the table for the season...so stay tuned. Otis
From Zaldy (9/29): Hi Otis, I am a big fan of the Orlando Magic back here in Philippines (especially with Grant Hill and Dwight Howard). I think what the team needs most right now is a strong, young center with a great upside that can partner with Dwight on the frontcourt. I believe Howard has found his niche in the NBA as a premier power forward and thus, no need to move him to center. Don’t you think we would need someone like Eddy Curry whom we could partner with Dwight in the paint and become a formidable duo? Our backcourt are well established, thanks in large part to Grant Hill’s amazing comeback, Steve’s great all around talent, Nelson’s emergence, along with the key addition of Keyon, not to mention we have Hedo and DeShawn as back ups. I really believe that by adding Eddy Curry, our team would be considered as one of the Elite teams in Eastern Conference. After all, everything in life is a risk. Thanks and god bless!
Otis: Zaldy, I like the fact that you are thinking of ways for our team to get better, but it’s not that realistic. He will be hard to get being a restricted free agent, plus the fact that the Bulls like him and want him back, he has a medical issue that’s not real clear as of yet. His team is doing it right, waiting for everything to clear before signing him to a contract. Keep the ideas coming soon someone out there will come up with an idea that hasn’t been thought of by the Magic brain trust. Thanks, Otis
From Judy (9/25): Hi Otis, it was great news reading the Orlando Sentinel this Sunday and seeing that Bo Outlaw might be returning to the team. That being said, does this mean that Darrell Armstrong, "the heart and hustle" of the Magic, might also be reactivated to us again, when he becomes a free agent? I am looking forward to a very "Magical Orlando Magic Season for 2005-2006" Thanks for the good work you and the Magic organization are doing this summer. Good to hear and see we have a healthy Grant Hill.
Otis: Thank you very much for you support, but the "heart" will be enough for now. We looking forward to having Charles on this team. Thanks, Otis
From Susan (9/24): Dear Mr. Smith, I was very disappointed when you drafted Fran Vazquez with the 11th pick in the NBA Draft. So, I am watching European Basketball overseas and I am impressed on what he can do. So keep up the good work and hope to see the Magic in the playoffs this year. GO MAGIC!
Otis: I know it's hard, but have faith. Thanks for the support. Otis
From Jeff (9/24): Finally Fran was given some playing time against Croatia. Well I should say that he was GREAT! Nice job Mr. Smith. I really love to see him in a Magic uniform, if not next season, ASAP! GO MAGIC!
Otis: Thanks, so would I. Otis
From Mark (9/26): Hey Otis, I just wanted to say that I went to the open house yesterday and it was so much fun. My name is Mark. You don’t remember me, but when you were going in from signing autographs, I stopped you and asked for a picture. Before the picture we were talking about the 1990 dunk contest with you and Dee Brown. I told you if you saw my name to please answer my questions and you said you would so...my question is with the upcoming signing of Bo Outlaw do you think that he can mold Dwight Howard the same way that he helped Amare Stoudemire? Good luck on the season, I bought the weekend plan and I am very excited to see what the boys in blue can do. Go Magic.
Otis: Mark, my hope for Dwight is to learn as much as he can from Bo. What Bo brings is the knowledge of how to play the game, and every minute he's on the floor play like it's the last. Bo is what we call a pro, and he brings that to work everyday. Thanks, Mark, for you support of the Magic. Otis
From Oscar (9/22): Otis, how are you and family doing? What happened with Nigel? Did you as a team go in a different direction? If he has a need, what does he need to work on? Thank you much. Proud Uncle.
Otis: You are referring to Nigel Dixon, a player from Orlando, who we had in for a workout, right? At the time he was still having some issues with his knee. Because I watched him grow up hanging around JT at the Smith Center, I have very good knowledge on how much better he has gotten over the years. Tell him I said good luck, and keep working. Thanks, Otis
From Eric (9/23): Hey Otis, you answered Rodney’s question to perfection. I love the idea of building chemistry and have been all for not adding anyone to ruin that chemistry or trading away players for no reason. None of the fans that I know seem to buy into that though. I don’t know why fans underestimate the chemistry, It’s such a vital part of being a good team. I guess they’re just fans of the Names on the jerseys instead of the game itself. I think we have a great team and real fans realize that. You guys are doing a hell of a job keeping the team’s core together and even if you don’t post this on the website, just wanted to thank you for all the hard work you put in to make sure we have competitive team, and keeping us up – to – date on what’s going on. Thanks again.
Otis: Thank you Eric for just having faith. Thanks, Otis
From Junior (8/13): First of all, I'm one of the biggest MAGIC fans EVER! But Otis, I just have one question. In one of your earlier comments, you said you expected big things from Mario Kasun. Last year,I thought he was an awesome rookie when he came of the IL and thought he had great potential to be an awesome center in this league. How much more has his game been polished up since the end of last season?
Otis: With Mario it's all about confidence. What he did this summer is play and have success in playing, I think that will help his confidence. I also believe that Coach Hill will have a positive impact on his continued development and growth. I think because of size, he will have a bigger role this season. Thanks, Otis
From Kirtan (9/22): Hello, Mr. Smith. I really appreciate you taking the time to answer questions of us Magic fans. I recently heard that the funding for the renovation of the TD Waterhouse Centre has been approved. Is that true? If not, then what's the current status regarding that situation. I am a big Magic Fan and I would hate to see the Magic leave Orlando. There are still lots of true Magic fans out there who support their team unconditionally.
Otis: Kirtan, thanks for your support of the Magic. It's much appreciated. To be honest, my focus at this point is working with the players and coaches to put the best team on the floor. In regard to TD Waterhouse Centre, our position is simply that we need to do what's right for the community.
From Pete (9/20): Hi Otis, in response to Cliff back on 8/30 you had said that there was a lot of interest in Reggie Evans (as there should be) and that it would have to be a sign and trade deal, but that you were exploring the options. From what I have read about him he seems like he would jump for a good offer. Isn't he exactly the type player we are looking for? If you were able to pull this off, how much would you guess we'd have to give up to make the deal work? I mean would our offer have to match his new salary in the player(s) we trade, or could you also throw in cash? Comparing geographical locations and team rosters, I am betting (hoping) you can make this happen. Thanks!
Otis: We looked into it but it was not something we could have gotten done without affecting our core. But, it was explored. Thanks, Otis
From Ellis (9/19): Otis, I've noticed Bo Outlaw is still an unsigned unrestricted free agent. Would the Magic consider re-signing him? There's no question as to what he brought to the Magic in his previous seasons, and I'm sure he'd be a bargain. How 'bout it? Bring back Bo! Thanks.
Otis: We like Bo and think he could be an asset for the growth of Dwight, but a lot depends on where Bo is in his career. Winning and doing what it takes for this team to win is big. That sometimes means more and it also means less at times. But he has worked out with our guys all summer. Thanks, Otis
From rsorl (9/17): Have you been following the Eurobasket? Fran is barely seeing any court time, Hedo is same old (clutch in OT vs Bulgaria), and Kasun is impressing me with very solid play.
Otis: Thanks, yes we have been following the cup games, [Assistant GM] Dave [Twardzik] is over there as we speak. Thanks, Otis
From Juan (9/16): Hello Mr. Otis, I saw in one of the latin newspapers that Eddy Curry and Sprewell, Ok! Here's my point: I think and believe that we can try to pursue Curry 'cause he can bring strength to the court and presence, now I know that we got Ruben Boumtje-Boumtje and that's cool. I read that Kevin Cato's shoulder is better but it's good if we can add Eddy. Also (I apologize if I'm annoying) we got open market with Sprewell, so in my understanding we got 2 players in the market that can help us in the paint. Thank you and forgive me if I'm annoying but I want to see my team win more games this year and become a threat to the other teams and a championship contender.
Otis: Juan, thanks for your interest in your Magic. Spree is now with the clippers and Curry will be a little tricky. Thanks for your help. Otis
From Sam (9/19): I heard a rumor the Magic are interested in Marcus Fizer. That is better than Laettner. I don’t care if he knows Grant Hill, obviously Shaq does not want him. I like the team the Magic have right now but I had one question. Do you think we could pull off a sign and trade with the Bulls for Eddy Curry? I agree Paul Pierce is a long shot and we don’t really need him. We need Curry, a Center one who is not afraid to bang down low and doesn’t get hurt all the time (except the heart issue which I think will be fine). Besides that, I like where the Magic are going I have been a fan since they first came in to the league. One more thing. In football, my teams are the Patriots and Bucs. I was teased for a long time about them the same way they tease me now about the Magic. Well you know the Pats and Bucs are for real, so you know where I am heading with this. The Magic will win this year. Look out fans. I have read all your nasty emails to Otis. When they win, I do not want to hear none of you praise him. I am Magic fan for life through the good times and the bad times. Steve Francis has what Tracy did not have and that is heart. Go STEVE-O. And Otis you keep doing what you are going to do best - getting us good players. LET THE GAMES BEGIN. Thanks.
Otis: Sam, thanks for your support. I better enjoy now while we are undefeated. Otis
From Jeff (9/19) : Good afternoon, Otis! I've been thinking...all this talk about needing a big man. I think a lot of people are overlooking Mario Kasun. With consistent burn, Mario has shown the necessary skills and strength to bang down low with the best of them. If he can keep the fouls down, he's easily a legitimate backup at either frontcourt position. Couple that with his recent strong showing at the Eurobasket 2005 tournament (starting while averaging close to 10 points and 7 rebounds per game) and we may be on to something! Your thoughts?
Otis: Thanks Jeff, but that's not me talking about a big man, I'm just answering you questions. I think Mario will have a good chance to make an impact - that will be up to Mario. He has a big body and is very skilled for his size. Thanks, Otis
From Davor (9/16): Thanks again for doing this. What an imaginative and innovative idea -- I can't recall any other executive in any sport communicating with its fans on this level, and the best part is that you're not answering crappy questions only. I have two. I can imagine certain players have their roles set (Howard, Hill, a healthy Cato, etc.), but what I see as the most interesting is the battle at PG -- are Nelson and Dooling going into camp in a virtual tie, without any sort of a headway in Brian Hill's eyes? Also, what do you think of the staff Hill has brought on, and how do you think it compares with some of the other top notch staffs in the league?
Otis: Davor, well, I like the fact that we have two guys that could fight for time or even starting, that doesn't concern me. I only wish we had the same level of competition at every position. Both will not back down and thinks the job is theirs, which will make for some very good practices. I happen to like this coaching staff very much, we added coaches with head coaching experience and the like to teach. That's imporant, they don't think any player can't learn. Brian listens and leans on his staff already No man is an island. Thanks, Otis
From George (9/17): Otis, at first I was very upset about our first round choice. Then when he made the decision not to play this year, I was even more upset with our front office for picking him. But after having time to reflect on our draft choice, and thinking about our draft last year (A+++ draft last year by the way) I realized that we Magic fans must have more faith in you, and I do. I have two questions, one you probably can not answer. But do you feel that Fran played us in the draft to get more money in his European league? Two...How do you think we stack up this upcoming year to the Miami Heat and the Pistons? I think those are the only two teams that we have to go through to win the east!
Otis: George, thanks for your interest in the Orlando Magic. I don't think Fran played us to get more money, he was then and is now a very good pick for the Magic. Keep in mind, we draft for the future, and he is a big part of our future. You just have a kid that at the last minute got cold feet, and had a lot of life changing things going on in his life. He will be a very good addition to the Magic in the future. I think our team stacks up well with every team. We have to defend better, and not just try to outscore teams. It will not be an easy task, but we have a very good basketball team. Thanks, Otis
From Rodney (9/17): I have to admit that was a very noble thing we as an organization did for the people in New Orleans in bringing some of their staff members here and as I remember didn’t they say that we were the first ones to contact them! That shows class not only in a professional level but as a city that we to know what it is like to be hit by a hurricane and know the devastation that it causes and to aid people in a time of need is a true sign that even in the darkest times Nobleness is truly MAGICAL! Now with that said, I do have a question throughout all of the questions that people have been sending they are asking about the acquisition of an additional 4 or 5 and I am hearing rumors that Howard would like to play the 5 now. Heath had asked you a question about Christian Laettner and an additional 4 or 5 and your exact response was "I think Christian would be a good fit, but we are looking at other options" so my question is if there are other options who are they if you don’t mind me asking? Thanks for responding to our e-mails.
Otis: Rodney, as I have said before, don't concern yourself with player 14 on the roster. It's about the growth and development of our current player, and the have had a very good summer. That's news to me that Dwight wants to play some 5, but with that said he just wants to play, anywhere on the court. I don't think any of the names, I would throw your way would knock you socks off, that's the reason we have not signed any of them, what's most important to me now is building on the chemistry we had last season and not adding anyone that would hurt that in anyway....Teams added players this off season that on paper looks good, but I'm not to sure they where...it remains to be seen. Thanks, Otis
From Ed (9/6): Dear Mr. Smith, keep up the good work and tks for taking the time to answer our E-mails. I know that everything doesn't work out perfectly like us the fans expect it to. And the Magic organization like yourself continually get bashed for everything not going right but I like the fact and intent that the Magic organization always have in trying to building a winning team. I feel good about this team we have and the nucleus of it. So far we only have one player change this year (Kenyon Dooling ) and the Magic are healthier, I think these are two big positives for this year. I have an off-the wall question for you. Do you really get much of chance to be a Magic fan or is it all mostly business?
Otis: Thanks for your interest in both the Magic and me. Yes, I do get to be a fan, it is difficult at times just to be a fan, always thinking of ways to get better. Thanks. O
From Mehdi (9/2): Hi Otis, I’m a Belgian from Brussels and have been a die-hard Magic fan since the expansion team. I have been several times to Orlando to see them play, especially last year to see the young Dwight Howard. Too bad for Fran but we have to do with what you have. Hearing Grant Hill feeling better and better is maybe the decisive key for next year. We all know how fantastic this player is and how he makes his team-mates better. Francis is an awesome gifted player and if he plays the right way (with the help of Brian Hill) and with the addition of a more expereienced Dwight Howard, this team can make some noise. But everybody knows you need a team to be successul. We have many versatile players (Francis, Dooling, Hill, Turkoglu, Deshawn) and good mid-range shooters but don’t you think this team has a lack of 3pts shooters? Turkoglu and Pat are our best shooters from downtown (though both were quite inconsistent last year), Diener showed he was also good during the SL but he’s a rookie. Nelson and Francis are more slashers and mid-range jumpers players, same for Deshawn and Dooling, so do you think this is enough to optimize the inside-outside game that Coach Hill wants to bring? Sorry for bad english. Thanks for reading and I wish you good luck!
Otis: I think we have players that can make open shots, from both long range and mid range, you get better looks at the baskets once the ball goes in the post. Dwight's development will also help with our outside shooting, so our inside game is very important to our outside game. Let's not kid ourselves, we have to stop the other team from scoring from time to time. Thanks. Otis
From Sherry (9/2): [Follow-up] Shortly before Paul Silas was fired, Keon was being considered for a 10 day contract. I don't know what put an end to the discussion but wouldn't he be worth putting some feelers out for?
Otis: Sherry, thank for the information on Keon, but I don't know if he would fit into what we are doing. Thanks. Otis
From Eric (8/12): Hey O, what kind of frontcourt player(s) do you think we need to help this team? And are we going to look to sign them long term or are they just to fill up roster spots until we clear up cap space? Thanks for your time and good luck this year!
Otis: I don't think it would be in our best interest to sign anyone to a long term deal at this point. Thanks. Otis
From Seth (8/12): Now that Christie was waived, I wonder if his contract is still trade-able as an expiring contract. There is a lot of confusion about this on the boards.
Otis: Seth, first stay off the boards! No it's not a contract anymore, so therefore it can not be traded. Thanks, Otis
From Steve (8/12): I love this team. That being said, I am truely amazed that when players enter the draft they are not obligated to sign a type of promise sheet that they WILL play the following season or they WILL NOT be allowed to enter the draft. It's a shame for a needy team to blow a lottery pick on an idiot who wants to play "oh let's see what happens when I enter an NBA Lottery" then say "well that was fun, now I'll go play in Spain". Secondly, I see we "waived" Doug Christie, well I also see that Brian Grant is available. Enough said....any comments?
Otis: No comments, but thank you for yours. Thanks, Otis
From Nick (Moscow, Russia) (8/12): Hi Otis, it's great to be able to send comments to our GM himself. I've been a Magic fan for more than 12 years already and I've seen both ups and downs of this francise. Just wanted to ask you not to rush for the immediate success now, you have come to run this francise at a critical moment, for the first time since Shaq left I feel that we have a clear shot to become a contender team. The shot's name is Dwight. However it will take time, that's why in my opinion first of all we have to plan ahead and play smart, I undersatand that as a GM you care the most about having a winning team here, but it's better to become a contender in a couple of years than to give up everything now just for making a PO apperance. As I look at the situation now we are pretty much locked up with our salary cap until Grant's contact runs out, that's why I was just shocked with a rumors of trading for Finley, that would take us a year longer to make a major run for all the neccesary pieces. Grant's contract will end in two years, by the summer of 2007 we should have a true All Star in Dwight, Nelson as our starting PG, Hedo as a key player on our bench, Diener and Fran also might be there I guess. With enough salary space we should be a true OPTION for all the players available. Trading for Christie was a bold move but we needed to cut the payroll anyway, as for Fran just as I've said we need him in 2007, not now, he'll have time to improve his game, learn some English and we'll get more of a player we need in him. Otis I put my trust in you, it takes time to build a great team and we have to be patient, just make sure that by the summer of 2007 the Magic Beast from the East comes back. Thanks and best regards.
Otis: Thanks, Nick, for you comments and support. Otis
From RDruryPI (8/20): Hi Otis, I am in total disbelief over the lack of free agency action on the Magic's behalf. It seems that we really screwed up with the draft pick, gave Christie away and now it appears we are sitting on our hands and doing nothing to better the team. This is the first year I can think of, where I have no faith in the front office. Please help me understand what's going on at 1 Magic Place.
Otis: It seems that you like a lot of movement. So do I if it's needed. We signed the player that we thought could help us and fit with all the changes we made the last two seasons. Because we didn't have a lot of player movement this off season, doesn't mean change isn't happening. Thanks. Otis
From Heath (8/20): Hey Otis. My name is Heath. I have been a Magic fan for a long time now. Last season I went to almost all the home games and that's not even having season tickets. I am wondering what else we could be looking for this off season? With the pick-up of Dooling and the signing of Diener, and of course Steve-O and Jameer, we have definite depth on the guards, however we all know we need help in other areas? There are so many rumors you hear, I am wondering what else or who else we could be looking at? I have heard such things as possibly signing Christian Laettner for the leage minimum which would still give us money under the cap and then going after a center such as Othella Harrington which could definetly add some great defense and his short handed shot is not bad either. Dale Davis is definetly more defensive than offensive, however, that is definetly one thing we were lacking last year! Well whatever happens I am so excited for this year and I look forward to a great season with Coach Hill and the newly revamped front office! Any insight would be great! Thanks so much and LET'S GO MAGIC!
Otis: Well we are working on signing another big, but we are not going to do anything that will not help the chemistry. I think Christian would be a good fit, but he has to get comfortable with his role. But we are looking at other options, but don't feel like we have to do anything. Thanks. Otis
From Erik (8/12): Hi Otis. A local favorite, Mark Jones, filled in nicely even coming in late which is hard to do. We all know he didn't get to show his offensive side (49 points in a UCF game and 23 ppg ave in the CBA). Did you even look to sign him this year?
Otis: Erik, we needed Mark last season and yes he did fill in rather nicely, but we thought we needed a different type of player at that spot. I like Mark and wish him well. I hope he gets an chance to fulfill his dream. Thanks. Otis
Question from Kytu (9/14): Greetings Otis, my name is Kytu and I've been a Magic fan since the beginning and grew up across the street from the O-rena and love to watch you Jerry Reynolds and the Cat man do your thing back in the days. I see there's a lot of armchair GM's here but I respect your basketball IQ and [would] like to know what is it that you are trying to get accomplished during your term as GM and what players would you like to bring to the team? What upgrades do you think we need to have a winning team? And some of us do appreciate the enlightment. GM of the year.
Otis: Kytu, well, the first thing we need is time for the growth of players, and to make adjustments with the roster as the season goes. I would love to tell you what we need. I would like to see what this team can do with time and Coach Hill, then maybe we adjust before the trade deadline - if we need to. Thanks. Otis
Question from Mark (9/14): Dear 32, I've been wondering for a while why no-one has even brought up DeShawn Stevenson? I even have gotten an update on Marcin Gortat, but unless I missed it I haven't seen any news or plans for him this season. And Fortrill, aka Mr Basketball, seems to think we have a "glaring hole" at SG, maybe he should go back and watch the tapes of the 2nd half of the season. DeShawn I think finally made a breakout in his career. He was arguably the best slasher/ penetrator on the team. He picked up a 3pt shot - that was pretty consistent on several nights, especially when Hedo and PG were ailing! Which brings me back to my point - with Steve playing some 2, where's DeShawn? He did play some point in Utah. Also don't forget the Ol' Running Rebel vet himself - Stacey. Thanks.
P.S. We can only say the 'Brian Hill thing' til the season starts and we see a 180 w/ a real coach who has experience, discipline, command of the game, and other coaching fundamentals we probably haven't seen since about...'97 or 99.
Otis: Well Mark that's interesting that you would say that. DeShawn may be having the best summer out of all our players. We are hoping that he has a breakout season and continues the success he had at the end of last season. However, I don't see him playing much point. I think we tried that the year we got him in a trade. At this point he will be our back up 2...depending on how and where the coach plays Steve. Thanks. Otis
Question from Alessandro (9/14): Hi Otis, I'm a long time "international" Orlando Magic fan from Italy, been following the team since '95 and, although the Shaq-Penny era is still far away (record wise) I saw some improvements in the last few months. Anyway, I'd like to know if you honestly think our current roster can stand up to other teams in the East, because when I look around, I see a lot of improvement? Thx for you answer and keep up the good work connecting with the fans.
Otis: Yes, I honestly do think we have enough talent to win THE East, while yes some of the other teams appear to have upgraded in some areas, they lost somethings in others. All of the teams are hoping some type of chemistry develops during the season, and winning helps in that area, but too much player movement too often can prevent that from happening. We have a good core of players - that will have an effect on the outcome of this season. Thanks. Otis
Question from Fortrill (9/15): Thanks for responding Otis. Yes, I understand a camp invitee and I'm not saying that signing camp fodders isn't a good idea but that's ALL we've done this off season (besides Dooling). I think PP you look at hard. I think it's a price you should be willing to pay. Yes, teams like Miami and Washington have won with small backcourts but I'm not talking about size I'm talking about ability. Who won the CHAMPIONSHIP? The Spurs. Take a look at their lineup. Manu is a true 2, not a point converted to a 2 or TRYING to be a 2. This is the same thing this organization did with Juwan and Gooden. Experimenting. I think timing is about opportunity. You have an opportunity to get PP, you take it or try at least. I want us to keep the team fairly intact but I want a championship more then I want a family atmosphere when I watch Magic basketball. You cannot sit here and tell me that PP and Dwight Howard, GHill, Nelson or Francis wouldn't win games and probably would be more able to go to the Finals. I think you must find your own identity instead of trying to create an replica from other teams. Especially teams that didn't win the ring. Isn't that the big picture?
Otis: Thanks for your input and conversation, but we can do this all year, but the team you want to keep in place, will not be, because it will take at least two of them to get the deal done. But thanks for you input on the past and future of the Magic, I enjoy your passion. See you at the games. Thanks. Otis
From Steve (9/6): Hi Otis, my name is Steve and you never answer my e-mails but [I] appreciate the fact you DO answer e-mails and am learning a lot. My comment/question today is how can a team sign the likes of Brent Barry, Bruce Bowen, Tim Duncan, Micheal Finley, Manu Ginobili, Robert Horey, Tony Massenburg, Tony Parker, Glenn Robinson and Nick Van Exel and it appears the Magic don't even have the money to sign even ME? What noose is around the Magics neck? Explain please.
Otis: Steve, although the Spurs won the championship, and did it the right way, they did not overspend so they had a little money to spend, with their mid-level. So they broke it up among few players and they signed their own free agents. But the biggest reason is Tim Duncan attract players who want to win a championship by playing the right way. Most NBA teams are taking steps in that direction, but it takes time, and the right players and patience on the part of the owner, the coach and GM and the fan. That is where it falls apart - when we change those positions often times we change direction. Do you recall the early to mid 90's they took their shots but stayed the course? Hope that helps. Thanks. Otis
From Alberto (9/6): Hey Otis, please say it is not so, I heard a rumor the Magic are pursuing Christian Laettner. Where would he fit into the whole equation? Pass on him, if you want a fan's opinion.
Otis: Alberto, we have had conversations with him, but nothing has happened. But we see him as a change of pace player that would play behind Dwight and the 4 spot, very high basketball IQ, he understands how to play the right way. Thanks. Otis
Question from Cedric (9/13): Hi Otis, you keep saying that you want to bring the right people to this team and that we need one more big. What is wrong with B Hunter? Doesn't he fit the bill? I really think that he could be a good part of our team. A really good back up PF would give us some good minutes behind Howard. Is there something that us fan don't know about Brandon? Thx. Keep the good work ,GO MAGIC and thanks again for keeping in touch with your fans.
Otis: If we are not going to make major changes, I have to upgrade positions 10- 12. Thanks.
Question from Brian (9/13): Hey Otis, I wanted to write and say thank you for taking the time out of your off season (or lack of) to answer all our emails, even the bad ones like Fortrills. I guess it's like they say, you can't please everyone all of the time. I think you are exactly right about letting the dust settle. We have a great core of players, although another post player to compliment Dwight definitely wouldn't hurt. I also wanted to throw in what an outstanding gesture it was for yourself and the other Magic representatives to fly to New Orleans and help out. I was wondering besides hiring on some of the Hornets interns, what other things could the Magic offer to help out the Hornets? Also, if the Hornets do end up having to relocate for a season, what city do you think would be a good venue? Thanks again for you time.
Otis: Thank you very much, Brian. What we did was ask the Hornets what their needs were and they came back to us with, jobs for their insides sales group (not interns). It was an interesting request under the circumstance, and one that we thought we could do from top to bottom - food, shelter and clothing. I don't know at this point where they are going to play their games. We are waiting on the word from the league as well. It is a big deal, because it is takes away an expansion opportuinty for the NBA, but the league, not the Hornets, is making the call. Thanks.
Question from Luke (9/13): Dear Otis, Hi my name's Luke. I sent a past email, I was wondering if at this stage you are considering only having 14 guaranteed contracts going into training camp, and choosing the 15th player during the training camp process or are you planning on going into training camp with 15 guaranteed contracts? I also was wondering if the rumors are true about Felipe Lopez has been offered a contract and if so has he shown much interest? Also I was wondering if you have talked to Jahidi White?
Otis: Luke, at this point, it looks as if we are going to take 13 contracts into camp, and if we sign Felipe that will not change things. We have not talked to Jahidi White at all during the off season. Otis
Question from Fortrill (9/10): First Dooling (decent, nothing more), then Boom Boom (pfft, whatever) and now Felipe Lopez (zzzzzzzzzzzz). Ya'll are really making a splash this off season. Back to reality, ya'll haven't done squat. Things you have done make no sense. I've studied basketball for many years and this off season we have gotten a load of small point gaurds (and no draft pick, by the way, the way Fran acts, I wouldn't want his soft behind on my team anyways) and still have a glaring hole at SG. Paul Pierce is said to be headed to Denver. Why didn't you contact Boston about PP? Really, as a fan since 1989, this organization is turning me off more and more every year. I know you'll say "Dwight this and Brian Hill that" well, if you haven't learned from the whole T-Mac thing and putting all your eggs in one basket, well, get ready for the same result. Dwight will be gone.
Otis: Mr. Basketball, I know you have followed basketball for many years; I would hope that you are smart enough to know a camp invitee verses someone we sign to a contract, that’s the first thing. Second, yes we could have had PP at what price? You have to stop trading and let the dust settle, maybe this team isn’t good enough, but this season we will find out instead of not knowing if they are the right fit or not. You want us to trade the team and fire the coach, which by the way makes no sense. The coach was the problem. So we hire another one, now the players are the problem so you go get more. Just sit a watch and study the game. Watch the teams that are winning. GET THE RIGHT PEOPLE ON THE BUS. There will be a time for change, but that time is not now. Maybe the next GM will make all the changes you want but you will have something to say about that too!
Question from Remy (9/9): Hi Otis, thanks for answering fans' question, way to connect with the die hard fans! I have to say I believe Dwight Howard will dominate this league in a few years. I expect him to be a whole lot better next season already! Now my question is do you think, unlike Tmac, Shaq and Penny, Dwight will stay with the Magic his whole career? And what will Magic management do to retain him? Thanks! MagicHolland
Otis: Remy, all those situations were different and I'm sure this will be. We want Dwight to be a part of the Magic family for a long time. I'm sure past management said the same for those other players. Thanks.
Question from Jeff (9/8): Since we have another defensive player in our lineup(Ruben Boumtje-Boumtje), is it possible to trade Cato for Eddy Curry? He can help our need in the post. Im not sure if this is a good move(coz of Curry's heart problems), but it can be an option. What do you think sir Otis?
Otis: Jeff, I like the way you think, but why would you make that trade if you are Chicago? It takes at least two teams to make a trade. Thanks.
Question from Julian (9/5): A follow up to rodney's question...if we won't be under the cap next year after Cato and Battie's contracts expire, shouldn't we trade at least one of them and get something in return? The mid level exception won't allow us to resign both- it's even possible that we won't resign either! Why not move either of them, maybe throw in your blue chipper in Spain and get a real big man in return!? New Orleans gave up their best players for salary cap space, how about someone like Maglore?
Otis: Thanks for the input, but if we want to sign our own players, we can do so for more than the mid level...Thank you. Otis
Question from Maria (9/5): No offense to any player, but why don't we pick up Eddy Curry, Vladimir Radmanovic, and Gerald Wallace? And let go of Andrew DeClercq, Brandon Hunter and Mark Jones?
Otis: No offense taken. It's simple really. They all are restricted free agents, which can be tricky for players to get off the free agent market. And we didn't have any money to spend this summer other than the mid level. Thanks for the advice. Otis
Question from Iloveursulita (9/2): Hi Otis. Is there any chance that we could re-sign Hunter? I really think he could be a really valuable back up. If we do re-sign him, we would only be a vet away from a very good team. Could that vet be Laettner? Thx for taking the time to answer my mails. Keep the good work, GO MAGIC.
Otis: Well, we have not made that committment to Brandon at this point and we are still trying to add at least one big, but are still unclear on who that will be at this point. Otis
Question from Matt (8/31): Hey Otis, can you explain the situation with Marcin Gortat? I haven't really heard anything about him since we drafted him. It seems likely he'll play in Europe next year, but what are our future plans with him? Thanks.
Otis: Matt, it's amazing that no one really brought Gortat at all, but this is the opposite of the Fran situation. He is in our plans but not for another year or so. Just need more time to develop and doing it in a system in which he will get more playing time will help in his development just as it will with Fran. The difference: we want Gortat to stay another year. This is not new to the NBA and is not new to the Orlando Magic.
Question from Rodney (8/5): Ok, so now if no team is interested in making a trade for Doug Christie and [when] we waive him and clear his salary cap from our total salary does that mean that we will pick up a higher quality person in free agency? Or are we still going to exercise our $2 million to get a lower quality 4 or 5 person and just wait until next season to get a high quality player when Cato and Battie’s contract expires?
Otis: Rodney, that’s called creative financing which we will not be allowed to do because we are not under the cap. But, what we can do is just sign a player with what we have left of our mid-level exception. As for as next year goes when Cato and Battie contract expires, we still will not be under the salary cap. With that said we would only have the mid-level to sign other free agents.
Question from Sherry (8/30): Otis, Sherry here in California wants to know has the Magic organization considered contacting Keon Clark at all? I cannot help but feel he could bring a much needed defensive presence to the Magic.
Otis: Hey, Sherry. Have you seen Keon Clark in the last 18 months? Neither have I. I think he got out of basketball for a year or so. Are telling me he's making a come back? If so how much of a chance are you willing to take...Otis
Question from Cedric (8/30): Hi Otis from a French fan. First, I'd like to thank you for taking the time to answer all thoses mails and I really hope that you'll keep doing that all season. Second, I'd like to talk about Fran, but not like other fans. I really think that taking Fran at #11 was a good choice (we needed a big and he was the best available there, only May and him were still on board). Please could you assure me that we are gonna do our best (via trip there ,on going phone call and selling the Orlando life to his girlfriend) to make sure he joins us next year (a good european tournament and a great season with Girona might bring up his confidence)? Keep [up] the good work. I really like what you did with the draft and free agency. I really hope that we can re-sign Brandon Hunter (sure he could be a great PF back up) and give some more minutes to Kasun (he is doing well with his national team). Thx for taking the time to answer my mail.
Otis: Cedric, we will and have had contact with Fran and will continue to do so, just to continue to let him know that he is a part of the Magic family. Thanks for the support.
Question from Cliff (8/30): Thanks for answering a previous email. I was wondering if we have a shot at Reggie Evans? He seems like an awesome role player and could be a great addition. You probably can't say much since he is a FA, but are you interested in him?
Otis: Cliff, there has been a lot of interest in Reggie Evans as of late from a few teams us being one of them, but because he is a restricted free agent getting him would be a little tricky. We don’t have much cap space to play with and in my last conversation with his agent at the end of last week they are looking for some big dollars. I like him but we don’t have enough to get him, unless we do a sign and trade...exploring the options.
Question from Faisal (8/12): First I'd like to say thanks for giving us fans an opportunity to ask you some questions. During the off-season some of us just really need a fix for some Magic info. My question was about the starting positions at the back court. There's all this talk about moving Stevie to the 2 spot, I was wondering if that was a definite move? I like the idea of switching him to the 2 every once in awhile, but he's still a point guard who has the best chance of running the ball in a new offense. Everyone's comparing him to A.I. when Eric Snow was running the point. People seem to not notice though that Allen had a career season this last run at the point. He's an all star who learned how to distribute the ball because he needed to. I think Steve Francis can easily do the same. Also, I heard the Nets aren't going for Abdur-Rahim, what'ya say we bag him?
Otis: Faisal, the topic of Steve moving from the point to the off guard has been tossed around a lot this off-season. I think we are going to have to wait and see what coach Hill has in store for Steve, although Steve would tell you himself he just wants to win. What position is not that important to him. He is a very talented basketball player in which you want to have the ball in his hands. I’m sure no matter where you put him on the floor he will be effective. I guess we were a little late in getting to Shareef, but we did have him as one of our top free agents this off season, but that was a tall order because he plays the same position as Dwight and they have the same agent. But we did make a run at him early.
Question from Michael (8/11): HI OTIS, MY SON AND I ARE SEASON TICKET HOLDERS IN THE LOWER BOWL AND WE WANT TO KNOW WHAT YOU ARE GOING TO DO TO SHORE UP THE MIDDLE, NOW THAT FRAN VASQUEZ IS NOT COMING THIS YEAR.
Otis: Michael, there was no one in this year's draft that could step in right away and have an impact inside, NO ONE. So we are still looking for a player with size to give us something off the bench, behind Dwight, Tony, Cato. Still looking, but whoever it is will have to work their butt off to get time - that’s how much confidence I have in the guys we have now. Maybe I’m nuts.
Comment from Titansftball (8/16): HELLO, MR. Smith. I wish you all the best in your new job. I am a true believer and I believe we can win a championship every year. I just wanted to say that let's try and keep this team in Orlando because ORLANDO loves this team.
Otis: Thanks for your continued support.
Question from Marten (8/26): Mr. Smith, last year the team's goal was to bring Dwight Howard along slowly on the offensive end, allowing him to focus on his defense. He showed some nice flashes of offense in March and April. What is the organization's plan for Dwight Howard in this upcoming season? Thanks for taking the time to answer. GO MAGIC!
Otis: Marten, Dwight will be a big part of what we do on the offensive side of the floor. Brain likes the ball to go inside out...which will make Dwight very important. He has improved his touch shots around the basket which will help. Otis
Question from Jason (8/25): Otis, seems you're getting a little hot under the collar! So I won't hammer you with any of the past questions. My question is...where does Pat Garrity fit in? Have you guys tried to trade him? He seems slow, with no ups and liability, I just don't think his recent numbers are worth a roster spot. What do you expect out of him this year? Thanks.
Otis: Jason, first let me say thank you for paying enough attention to notice that I was getting the same questions and hitting me with something different. Well, we have not actively sought any trades for Pat. We like what he brings to the table as a long range shooter, but we would like to see if Pat can make a few more shots with this team. With players like Steve, Grant, Jameer, and others they will have to create shots for Pat. In Pat's defense, he has been hurt the last two seasons but is healthy this year and is in the gym everyday working out and getting up shots, so we are hoping Pat will continue to help us spread the floor so that players like Dwight can work down low...Thanks.
Question from Cleon (8/23) : Hey Otis, first time e-mailer. All of our current bigs (Cato,Battie, Garrity, Kasun, Boom Boom?, Gortat?) outside of (hopefully) Dwight are all offensively challenged in the post. If we sign another Big are you guys looking for another banger type, or someone that we could give the ball to if needed? I dread thinking about our offensive post game if Dwight (who is still a little raw himself) goes down for any period of time. Is someone like a Marcus Fizer type a possibility? That type of player (physical scorer) seems to be a missing option with our big man group. We seem to have all the other "types". P.S.- Did you or Dave re-measure (ht. & wt.) Dwight yet? If so spill...Thanks for giving your time. I know we complain TONS but we all really do appreciate it.
Otis: Cleon, we are all hoping Dwight will grow, not just height but weight as well. He has put on some weight but has not grown any taller at this point. Whoever we add to the roster has to be the right fit, so you may see us pass on a lot of players that you may want on your fantasy team, but don’t fit to well in what we are trying to do here. We may need another big, but it has to be the right player or he will just sit behind what we already have. Thanks.
Question from Ed (8/23): Dear Mr. Smith, I was wondering how you think Pat Garrity will do this year and where will he fit when he comes back from his knee injury? Pat definitely has the outside shooting but shouldn't he work more on his postup game? I know he is slow and not very athletic but I feel he has a good pump fake move and could easily hit inside jump shots if open instead relying on the three-pointer so much. Also he didn't look like he fit in with this team most of the time last year. What do you think? Go Magic.
Otis: Ed, I like Pat as a player for this team. What he does for us is help spread the floor, that's when he's knocking down shots. We are looking for Pat to have a big year for us. But he is a shooter and when the ball is going in the basket, the rest of the game looks very easy for everyone on the floor; but when it's not, it's very hard to keep him on the floor. I don’t know if changing Pat's game and making him a post player at this stage of his career is the answer. I will say this, he is as healthy as I have seen him in 3 years, so I’m expecting big things. Otis
Questions from Boyd (8/24): Hi Otis, just a few questions... 1. Is Dwight still growing? How's his height and weight now? 2. Hedo, Grant, and Stevie can fill up the basket. Are we really going to let Dwight show his offense? 3. The Salary Cap, Mid-Level Exemptions and whatever else is financially available, or limiting...can the Magic pick up a Big who might also be expensive? 4. What about waiting to get the next Magic player until the cuts start happening at the end of training camp or early on in the season? And thanks for informing us Magic fans about the inside scoop.
Otis: Since you wrote them this way I will answer this way: 1) yes, still the same height and weight is about 255. 2) yes, I think that’s the way Coach likes to play, inside out. 3) We have part of our mid-level left and our lower-level to sign players, plus we have our veteran’s min. 4) That’s a great idea, we just might do that. You are welcome...Otis
Question from Eric (8/23): Hey 32! Just heard the news that we signed Double B. So nice they named him twice! I’m a big B. Hunter fan, he hustled last year and was a fearless bull in the paint. Is there still interest in bringing him back next year? Good luck this season!
Otis: Well, Eric we brought him in today for our coaches to take an up close look at him, so yes we still have some interest...but we will see. Otis
Question/Comment from Michael (8/23): I like the pick-up of Travis Diener (Scott Skiles clone?!?), and I don’t place any blame on you guys for Fran Vazquez walking away. I will even wait on Marcin Gortat before rushing to judgment, but Ruben Boumtje-Boumtje?!?! Please tell me that this is not the best (or only) front court move you could make. What about Othella Harrington, Alan Henderson, Malik Allen, or Christian Laettner?!? Surely one of them could be signed to a reasonable contract instead of a guy who wasn’t even in the league last year. Can you say career under-achiever? Maybe you can’t teach height, but surely three or four years of barely making a roster, and one out of the league completely, says something about a players work ethic, and/or development. I know this guy was a shot-blocking machine at Georgetown, and you need bodies to throw against Shaq; but even (getting old) Dale Davis and (already old) Kevin Willis would have more chance against the big fella. Guys, what were you thinking? An Increasing Uninspired Fan.
Otis: Michael, the one thing that I hope for in doing this Q&A is that our fans become a little more educated about some of the things that happen in basketball and the timing and why they happen. But that is not happening at all. I get a lot of the questions and responses to some of the things we are doing as if this is the first basketball cycle our fans have ever been on. With that said, I hope our fans know that camp is opening up October 4th. With that, teams will bring into camp no more than 20 players which would also include players that are under contract and some that have a chance of making your team - some a better chance than others. Ruben, I would say, has a very good chance of making our team because of size and knowledge of the game. We will sign a few more players that will fit the same M.O. But don't be alarmed because we have only 13 contracts. They will have a chance of making our team, and it also makes camp very competitive. By the way, there is a chance we may bring in one of those you mention - that's if he's the right fit. Or, Michael, we may decide to do nothing for now. Otis
Question from Jeremy (8/23): Hey O, glad you have been answering e-mails, this is a great resource to keep up with the facts of the Magic's front office offseason moves. My question is how do you see Boumtje-Boumtje fitting in with this team? The real question is of the players on contract now, are there any plans to send any overseas or to the NBDL for the upcoming season? We have a lot of talent, maybe too much, but that's not a bad thing, just what do we do with it in the upcoming season? Keep up the good work.
Otis: Jeremy, going into camp we need the size with Cato coming off shoulder surgery, and not having too much size to begin, he [Boumtje-Boumtje] gives us another big body for camp. From this point it's up to Ruben what he will become on this team. Jeremy, that would be a first that someone has said we have too much talent on the team, but thanks. Under the new rule only 3 players can be sent down to the NBDL. That would be Travis, Jameer and Dwight and, at this point, we like them all on this team and have plans form them.
Question from Luke (8/23): Hi Otis, I’m emailing from Adelaide Australia. I was wondering first of all if Ruben Boumtje-Boumtje has a legit chance of making the roster this season? He seems to have good size and reminds me of Steven Hunter. Also do you think with more experience at the NBA level he could be a possible starter some day? I was also wondering if we will go after another more experienced and proven big man like Malik Allen or a tweener like Marcus Fizer? Another thing, have you considered any players from the NBL (the Australian league)?
Otis: Luke, that’s up to Ruben. We do have a roster spot and if he comes in and earns it, then it's his. We are not finished with our roster yet, but thanks for the offer of players, some of which we are still in conversation with. But we will not just add a body for the sake of adding a body. This team will be fine if our players have taken the off season to get better - which it appears they have. Should be a fun season.
Question from Matt (8/11): Hey Otis, why exactly did the Magic waive Doug Christie? I would have thought that his expiring contract would be a valuable trade asset. I understand the luxury tax situation, but I can't help but think that trading Doug and getting something in return would have been a better move. Thanks.
Otis: Matt, you might be right, maybe before the trade deadline we could have gotten something for Doug, but right at this moment there wasn’t a deal to be had for Doug Christie. Yes, I know he signed a contract with Dallas, but what they were offering was Abdul Wahad, who I have not even seen anywhere for 3 season. He was more valuable for the tax break this season because of the one-time only amnesty provision.
Question from James (7/31): What's wrong with Jerome Beasley? The guy played great in summer league.
Otis: James, sometimes you look at player's stats and you ask yourself what's wrong with this guy why can't he stick. Jerome is a very good offensive player, and will learn what it takes to be a player in this league. I hope it's not too late.
Question from Adrian (7/28): Long time Magic fan, that along with a lot of others have questioned this years draft but will give them time. Quick question though: the 7 footer, Martynas Andriuskevicius - he made a lot of noise in last year's draft but never came out and now we drafted him. What is his status? Is he playing for us or did we trade him away?
Otis: Adrian, yes, we did draft Martynas for Cleveland so, we did trade him as soon as we drafted him. We thought he would be a good player but in a few years.
Question from Cory (8/10): Hey O, any chance of making a run at Shareef now that his New Jersey trade is nixed?
Otis: I guess it's been awhile since Shareef has signed with the Kings, but it was a very long shot for him to play with the Magic considering both he and Dwight play the same position and have the same agent, Aaron Goodwin.
Comment/Question from John (8/10): Hello Otis, I have been a fan of the Magic since its early days of Nick Anderson, Dennis Scott and of course, Shaquille O'Neal. As many, I questioned the pick of Fran Vazquez, but I would like to remind fans that many questioned Dwight Howard over Emeka Okafor last year. We have to admit that Howard's numbers were comparable to Okafor's even though Okafor was the go-to man in Charlotte and Howard was the third and fourth option for Orlando. So, I will reserve comment for years to come on that selection. Fans, we could be wrong. We have to wait and see. Here is my question: With Dale Davis and now Abdur-Rahim available, how agressively are we pursuing these guys? I know you can't really say, but I think Dale Davis at center would be a tremendous upgrade considering Cato's injuries and our need to clear the books in a couple of years. Also, I am glad to hear that Jameer is a focal point for the future. He is one of the toughest guards I've seen this year and probably has the biggest heart of any player on the Magic since Darrell Armstrong. Best of luck this season and I look forward to seeing my team in the playoffs.
Otis: Well, we are looking at a number of players that play both the 4 and the 5...and yes, Mr. Davis is still in the mix. Happy to hear you are a Jameer Nelson fan, I like him too!
Question from Susan (8/9): Hey 32, I was wondering how much money do we [have to] have in order to sign a free agent or two and do we have enough to sign Yao or Amare next year? Do we even have a chance on signing one of the two because Amare and Dwight or Yao and Dwight are a heck of a center and power forward combination.
Otis: Those are some very good names and we will not have enough cap space in two years to go after those types of free agent. But, I don't think they will ever become free agents.
Comment from Patrick (8/9): Hi Otis. I was wondering if you have ever watched wheelchair basketball and if you have, what your thoughts are on it? Thank you for your time. Keep up the good work.
Otis: Patrick, not only have I watched wheelchair basketball, back when I was doing community relations with the Magic, we had a start up team. When I was with the Warriors we had the National champs in wheelchair basketball.
Question from Ed (8/8): Because of the Fran Vazquez fiasco, are going to sign some of your summer players...i.e. Jerome Beasley, Boumtje-Boumtje?? Dwight Howard, Cato & Battie need help off the bench down low BADLY!! Who is it going to be...I'm curious?!
Otis: Ed, we are working the phones trying to find the right fit for our team. We will find someone to help down low but we will not be in a hurry.
Question from Mark (8/6): Hey Mr.O, I was wondering what is going to happen to Stacey Augmon?
Otis: Mark, we like having Stacey on our team. He provides both leadership in the locker room and is a solid defender...can never have enough leaders on you team.
Question from Kyle (7/22): Dear Mr. Smith, I have been a diehard Magic fan for as long as I can remember. I will never forget the 1994-1995 season when we went all the way to the NBA Finals. Although the season came to a tragic and early end, it will always be one of my most cherished memories. Many people unfairly blame Nick Anderson for the downfall of the Magic in the Finals. Sure, one of those freethrows would have sealed game 1 for us, and maybe even more than that. But that one moment in a player's career should not define how he is remembered by a franchise. My question is this: Why aren't there tributes around the TD Waterhouse Center to some of the great moments in franchise history and why isn't Nick Anderson's number 25 hanging in the rafters? I know the Magic have struggled the past several years to be successful but I, along with many other Magic fans, have many fond memories of Magic teams past. I understand we are trying to build for the future, but we can never forget our past. I want to see tributes to the past teams and players around the arena and I want to see Nick Anderson's number retired in the rafters so we can remember what a great player he was for our team. A concerned and Diehard Magic fan to the end.
Otis: I think you have some great ideas, and maybe in the future you will see Nick Anderson's jersey retired.
Comment from Tito (8/1): Mr. Smith thanks for answering our emails. First of all, don't worry about the Fran situation. It will alright. We need to move foward. We got to try to give Christie what he wants if he wants to leave, let's do it. We don't need that negativity in the locker room and please Magic fans we need to be realistic. We can't get Finley. HEY OTIS KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK! GO MAGIC!
Otis: As you know we released Christie, after trying to trade him, but there was nothing there. I don't think he would have been very welcomed by his teammates. That was the biggest reason, they took the deal with the press very personal.
Question from Mitya, Belarus (8/1): Hey Otis, thanks for an oppotunity to ask you some questions. What is your favorite moment when you were with the Magic as a player? And who was your best friend? What do you think about Mario Kasun as our top backup at center?
Otis: Mitya, I had lot of moments that were pretty good as a player, but you remember the moments when you played well and the team won the game. I think my best moment was left on the practice floor. I love to practice, because I really enjoyed playing basketball. Every opportunity I got to play anywhere was a good moment. But the fans remember the Bulls game, when I scored the game winning lay up. That was good because in the end we won. I had lots of good friends on all the teams I played on, I hung with just about every player at some point.
Question from Jose (8/3): Otis I know that Howard and Hill are staying put, but there has been a lot of mention of Francis or Nelson being on the move. Now with Vazquez not showing up you probably are going to think to get a big man in a trade. I just hope you don't end up breaking our future big four. What are your plans? Are you going to keep them together? Also, can you possibly pick up one of the players who are going to be waived? Thanks.
Otis: In the very first blog, I address the trading of any of our players. I don't see the benefit in continually trading players without seeing if they can develop together. I like our team. Jameer and Steve are big parts of what we about.
Question from Michael (8/3): Hi Otis, I really appreciate you taking the time to answer fans questions about the team. It’s a great way for fans to connect with you guys. My question relates to Hedo Turkoglu. Hopefully you’ll find this a reprieve from all the Fran questions. Some friends and I have an ongoing argument about whether we would have Hedo on our team had the T-Mac trade not gone through. On the Magic makeover DVD John Weisbrod said something to the effect of “The T-Mac deal relieved us of some burdensome contracts that made other FA signings possible.” I took that to mean that by getting rid of Juwan Howard’s contract, the Magic were able to sign Hedo. Lue/Gaines didn’t have big contracts to worry about and Hedo was the main FA signing that we made. Also, based on the history of the Magic, I am doubtful the ownership would’ve been willing to have two full MLE contracts running concurrently. It’d be a very expensive proposition especially if it led to the Magic getting into luxury tax land. This expense wouldn’t have made much sense considering how far out of contention we were. It’d make sense for the final piece of the puzzle but not for a 21-win team. So to summarize, the question is, would we have Hedo and JHo at the same time? If you aren’t able to respond publicly I’d understand, but I’d appreciate an email response. Thanks.
Otis: Michael, I hadn't thought about it like that, because in my mind, John had an order he wanted to do things in. And in that order, Tracy was first. I will tell you this, we did have interest in a big guy early, but Turk just made more sense. Moving the contracts gave us more flexibility over the next few years.
Question from Davilu (8/3): Otis, I think the Magic need to start rebuilding fan interest in the team. I think we have a pretty good nucleus of players to take us to the playoffs but apart from the website and the occasional article in the Sentinel the fans are starved for news about the team. Whatever happened to the Inside Magic radio show with Scott Anez and the late night tv show? Are there any plans to bring them back? We need to have something in place by training camp to keep interest building till the regular season.
Otis: Hey, I will pass your thoughts on to the right people. Do you prefer the radio shows? Our TV show, Midnight Magic, is scheduled to begin airing again on Sunday, October 30 on WKMG Channel 6 (CBS). Tune in!
Question from Matt (8/3): Mr. Smith, congrats on the new position and best wishes guiding the Magic back to playoff contention. I don't understand the signing of Keyon Dooling. Every time I have watched him play, he tends to dominate the ball (a la Steve Francis) and make questionable decisions. In Miami's series with the Pistons, whenever he was put in the game the Heat's offense ground to a halt as he refused to pass (even to Shaq). He looked scared and his high dribble must have given Stan Van Gundy nightmares. Granted, Keyon and Shaq were not often on the floor together, but how can you be a guard with the Diesel on your team and average less than 2 assists? And now we are going to give him a chance at starting? Between Francis and Dooling, the only time Dwight Howard is going to touch the ball is during shoot around. Thanks for your time.
Otis: Matt, what Keyon will bring to this team is on the other end of the floor. But coach Hill's offense will have lots of ball and people movement in it. You will have to wait and see. This team has a chance to be real good.
Question from Karen (8/3): We are big-time Travis Diener fans and we'd like to know this: where do you see Travis Diener fitting into the Orlando Magic picture? Thank you!
Otis: Karen, I like him a lot so that's why we drafted him. He is a tough little player that knows how to play the game "the right way." We can't have enough of them. I don't know his role yet. That will be up to Travis.
Comment from Judy (8/3): Hi Otis, you guys sure do get a lot of negative thoughts, but I still feel there are more MAGIC FANS behind you and the team than there are few. Last year when I went to the games the FANS were there even when the team lost the games. You have a lot of talent and I know we will have a winning team in 2005-2006. GO MAGIC! You are doing a GREAT JOB!
Otis: Judith, thanks for the kind words...Otis
Question from OverseasRE (8/3): Hey Otis, do you think the Magic will leave Orlando? I was born in Puerto Rico and moved here when I was 6 months old and the Magic have been the only basketball team that I have been really focused on. Plus, Orlando does not have any other big sports team, what are the chances of them moving?
Otis: No, I don't see the team moving. We are working with community and city officials to keep the Magic in Orlando. Our ownership is committed to this community.
Comment from Ismael (8/4): Enough about Fran, he'll be fine. Let's look @ the long run. It's not going to hurt for him to develop a little more even if he's there 2 years! He'll come over polished. Remember Toni Kokuc & Arvidus Sabonsis? They came over late in their careers. Also, Otis what about re-doing Grant Hills contract for the long run? I'm sure he'll be willing to win for the long run & set up for next year to get Amare. Even though we do have a playoff team here with the Magic this year, the thought of Dwight & Amare in the same front court sounds damaging to the rest of the NBA. Go Magic!
Otis: I like the way you are thinking. Don't know if we can do all you have suggested, but at least you are thinking.
Question from Trent (7/28): Mr. Smith how do you think our offense is going to look this year? I have heard from various sources that our offense is going to be slow, rather than up tempo like last year. I know that Steve Francis has more trouble in a slow tempo offense. That's why he disliked Van Gundy's offense in Houston. Will the same problems occur in orlando? Sorry if I'm bothering you with my 2 e-mails. Just curious and excited for next season.
Otis: You will have to wait and see, but this team was built to run. But we will have to run smart.
Question from Mark (7/29): Dear 32, Let me 1st off say I have loved you and your career here in Orlando. You also have an awesome last name! Unfortunately, I must say I am disappointed with you, Dave, and the scouting staff on this one [Fran]. I just don't think it's ever a good idea to fully rely on what others say about a prospect, others (international NBA players) opinions, and only scouting from a distance. I believe we should have at least sent someone to New York, mainly worked him out here if possible, and definately spoke to him and his agent for a while at least once. For him to say he hadn't decided to play in the NBA for sure is certainly a variation of the vibes most people got from him but interviewing and meeting/or calling before drafting him would have left him with more commitment and responsibility to the situation. That being said, nobody's perfect! I like what I hear about Diener and Dooling looked good to me last season - especially that monster dunk he had here. I also LOVE Jameer and seriously question not giving him enough playing time and/or the starting job. Getting rid of him this year WILL be a bigger mistake than giving away Anderson Varejo last year. Thank you in advance for your time and consideration in the message and the matters. For my dad and I, it is our 1st year of full-season ticket holders and we are both psyched and look forward to seeing you at the O-rena (TD waterhouse)! GO MAGIC!
Otis: Mark, read the web on Fran. We did all of that and then some. No one in the league would say anything different. For the record, no one is trading Jameer Nelson.
Question from Mark (7/29): Hey O, got another question/comment for you. Now that Vazquez has backed away from the NBA, can I join the team? I'm 5'10 and a great shooter. Don't believe me? Come out to LA fitness on OBT! lol I'm just playing, unless you want to sign me. My question is, are there any names out there of some big men who you would think about adding to the roster? Go Magic!
Otis: Mark, if you can grow about a foot then come see me. There's not much out there, so we have to shake a few bushes. O
Question from Eric (8/1): Hey Otis, I’ve recovered from the Fran drama. I honestly can’t put the blame on you guys for the decision he made, however what do we do from this point to fill any holes on our roster if there are any? I really like our core players and I think the fans forget that we have a heck of a team in place already. Thanks for communicating with us and answering our questions. GO USF BUULS!
Otis: Eric, thanks, just trying to provide a little insight, and I like reading the fans thoughts and ideas. I think what I have learned through this process is our fans just want to win, almost as bad as we do.
Comment from Boyd (7/31): Hi Otis, "Tweaking"...I like that approach even in the absence of Fran. I see where you still have six Forwards/Centers at 6-11. With Mario getting a year under his belt, maybe Marcin having a year somewhat like Mario's last year, and Dwight staying mostly at power forward, I think the Magic can improve on last year's performance with playoff possibilities. And seeing as you have spent a lot of time focusing on Steve going to 2, I am wondering if now you feel comfortable 'tweaking' your boards players and concentrating on Jameer, Keyon and Travis perfecting the point's distribution and leadership roles on the court? And are you going to be looking for another BIG with the remainder of your exception? Or, maybe see if Andrew is still available? Go Magic!
P.S. I went to ODU just after Dave graduated. Now, there was a point!
Otis: Boyd, we will look to add at least one more big. How we do it, I'm not sure....Thanks.
Comment from Britt (7/31): Hey Otis, how do you like your job now? This Fran thing is a[s] bad because you, yourself expressed confidence in the kid. As Magic Fans we have been through too much over recent years and it is hard to believe it will be that much better. You and Dave are in charge now and all we can do is wait until the season starts. From your emails it is clear that many are unbelievers. I go back to my first email--who in the Magic organization is going to be the cheerleader and information leader so we will not have to go on-line for our information about the team we hold season tickets [for]? You all denied the Fran refusal to come, but the on-line sources were more accurate than you. Trust is a very tenuious thing and right now you need to be totally honest or fans like me will fad[e] away too.
Otis: Britt, for the record I don't just like my job, I love my job. The problem is not the situation with Fran, but all the things that you see as wrong with the Magic. So now you are saying, 'see, nothing has changed'. We have not played one game yet. Can we judge before one game is played? If we had it to do all over again we would still draft Fran Vazquez.
Question from Rodney (7/30): Why is it that a committed fan such as myself, that has sent a number of emails to his favorite team listing ideas how to benefit the team can't even get a response back on any ideas that he submitted? Why is that?
Otis: Rodney, I have no idea, why you can't get an answer, maybe you are not asking the right question! Seriously, though, I have so many emails, I just can't get to them all. However, I see that I have another from you and will take a look.
Question from SAMASTERSOO7 (7/23): Congrats on adding Dooling as a point guard to the team. Along with Jameer Nelson, this should help with depth at that position. Since Roger Mason did so well in the summer league, are you guys going to take a hard look at his talent and possibly add him to the line up?
Otis: Roger had a very good summer league but I don’t know if he could help us very much in the fall.
Question from Cliff (7/23): Dear Otis, congrats on keeping everything so quiet around here. It is very much like when Saban joined the Dolphins. Impressive. My question is about the backcourt. Do you really feel confident with Steve Francis at the 2 and Dooling at point? It's a nice signing, but Steve struggles with his outside game and is more of a slasher. Grant Hill is not a 3 point shooter either and neither is Dooling. Don't you think our spacing will still suffer because of this? We just don't have that long distance threat in our starting rotation. I was really hoping the Magic would address this situation. I love Francis, but I don't believe in him at the 2 unless his 3 ball and jumper gets much more consistent. Good luck.
Otis: I think Steve is a guard and will play very well whereever he plays. Shooting is something we are concerned about as well.
Comment from D. Feliomar (8/1): What up O...How about we move this team to Tampa.
Otis: The team is in a good place in Orlando, and it's only short drive for you in Tampa!
Question from Antonio (7/31): After what has taken place with Fran, is there any positive side to choosing him? Can we trade his rights or something? Or do we just look like the biggest fools in this draft?
Otis: If we trade his rights today and he becomes the player we think he will become, then we become failures. The bottom line is we think he is a player and at this point we would like to retain his rights.
Comment from Ryan (7/31): Hello Mr. Smith my name is Ryan and not only do I love the Magic but I believe that all of the hard times will be worth it when we get this thing figured out. In the wake of this Fran Vazquez situation we need help in the middle now (and probably did before) and I was wondering which free agent big men you guys were looking at bringing in? I hope that Dale Davis and Reggie Evans are atop of that alleged list, both could help Dwight immensely. I was also wondering what offense Brian Hill is looking to primarily run next year, a four around one, a secondary fast break, or some two man game with Dwight and a wing? Thank you and don't worry about the negative Fran Vazquez criticism. The fans here are hungry for a winner and I think some W's will cool everything off.
Otis: Well, on a few fronts, we will get beat up about Fran Vazquez and every other player in Magic history that didn’t work out, but that’s part of the job. I can’t tell you what kind of system Brian will run, you will have to come to the games and see! We are looking for another low post player, and those or some very good names.
Comment from Bob (7/29): Otis, Curses! Can you say frustrated? I can imagine that the Vazquez situation has you ready to chew nails. In reality, however, the net effect is no different than if your draft pick had a season-ending injury in training camp - and you had to move on without him. Our problem last year wasn't because we didn't have Fran Vazquez on the roster. We have a good group and we can win in the playoffs by playing headier ball, with good team defense. I hope you guys, staff and coaching, aren't too discouraged.
Otis: Bob, thank you very much. We will recover from the loss this season. A supportive fan, nice...Otis
Question from Evan (7/29): Hi Otis! I think you guys have been doing a good job as the Magic GMs. As you know, last season, we had one of the lowest attendance records in the league. I was wondering what you guys are doing to get more people in the arena.
Otis: Evan, thanks for asking. Our ticket sales and service department is work hard to retain our current season ticket holders while aggressively going after new ones. Marketing and game operation departments are working there tails off to make sure the games are entertaining. But Evan, you know and I know, we must win games and win them in the right way. "Just win baby." Otis
Comment from Jose (7/27): Hey Otis, glad to see a true Magic player is finally the GM. I've heard that the Magic are offering Kasun, Christie, Augmon, and Battie for Mike Finely. Do you think we will be able to make that trade? Thanks for listening. Again it's good to have you leading at the GM position.
Otis: Jose, man you've been had. That's not true. But I have heard that same thing. Otis
Question from Cohwer77 (7/27): Otis - is there a true battle to be waged for the point guard position? Dooling was a nice pick-up but Jameer showed signs of greatness when he had the chance to start. What role might Diener play? Let's be honest, three pg's? What's your best guess at this point? Thanks.
Otis: Cohwer77, it's way to early to tell what Travis' role with the team will be, but the truth of the matter is he is very capable of having an impact on this team. He may be one of the toughest players we have. Otis
Comment from Ivan (7/27): The Mavs want to trade Finley & Doug Christie wants out. Let’s make it happen!
Otis: The Internet has it figured out. I wonder who's writing this stuff? I don't know if either team has interest in the deal.
Comment from Jack (7/29): Gentlemen, congratulations. Just when I thought the Doug Christie fiasco was the greatest example of a lack of homework and preparation before making a major basketball move (surpassing the trade for a disabled Grant Hill who could not even play half a season for four years), you have outdone yourselves!
From Florida Today: The Magic did not bring Vazquez to Orlando for a predraft workout/interview, but they did watch him play approximately 10 times in Spain. Also, the Magic did not attend a workout Vazquez held in New York before the draft. That workout played to mixed reviews and could have been one reason Vazquez’s stock fell.
Can you really look us, the season-ticket holders, in the eyes and tell us that you are shocked Vazquez will not play here this season, or maybe ever, when you neither interviewed him before the draft nor attended his American workouts?
According to a quote from Vazquez, "maybe" in a few years he will decide the NBA is for him. Maybe. You spent a lottery pick on a guy who not only doesn't want to play in the NBA this season, but might never want to play in America. Not a second rounder, a lottery pick.
Just a note, Sean May averaged 17 and 9 in the Rocky Mountain Revue Summer League.
As I pointed out at the beginning of my message, this follows too closely in the wake of the Christie debacle to go unnoticed by Magic fans. Depending upon whom you believe, Christie either a) already had a season-ending injury when you traded for him, or b) was so against playing here and psychologically distraught that he quit the team, had surgery, and never came back to even sit on the bench with his teammates. Either way, you have to explain how you couldn't have known about this beforehand.
And now we have the exact same situation again.
Otis: Jack, we always do our homework and from every indiction we got from our international contacts and scouts and the player's overseas agent, Fran wanted to be here, and was excited about the NBA. This hurts a little, but we will recover.
Question from Jordan (7/22): Hi Otis, I saw you were answering questions online and appreciate this greatly. I was wondering if you had any discussions with anyone concerning the Magic staying in Orlando. Has there been any progress? Thank you! Go Magic!
Otis: First of all, no matter what you hear, see, or read, our ownership is committed to Orlando. Period. End of story. From my standpoint and the standpoint of B-Ops, our first priority is give Magic fans the best season possible - we are focused on winning games. On the arena subject, our organization has had good communication with community leaders on a viable, long-term solution. Our energy as an organization right now is focused on continuing to add to the foundation of our basketball team and to keep moving in the right direction.
Question from Greg (7/22): Hi- I was just wondering what the contract status is of Andrew DeClerq and Pat Garrity. I have always liked them, and they have helped the Magic in the past, but they haven't really contributed much to the team for a couple of years, due to injuries, lack of playing time, and shooting slumps. Much as I hate to say it, wouldn't the Magic be better off getting rid of them, and replacing them with healthier, younger players? What's your opinion? Thanks.
Otis: Greg, Drew is a free agent this year and we have Pat for a few more years. With Andrew, we are taking a wait and see approach...and with Pat, we can use his long range shooting. We have faith that he will return to form this season.
Question from Scott (7/23): I have heard rumors that two fan favorites of the Magic [Bo Outlaw and Darell Armstrong] are going to come home to finish their careers. Have you guys had any discussions about doing this? I think I speak for all Magic fans when I say it would be really special to have them end their careers where they belong. Magic fan for life, Scott
Otis: We are moving forward with the team we have in place...and I like our chances. Tweaking...not changing just to change.
Question/Comment from Mathieu, Belgium (7/22): Dear Mr. Smith, connecting with the Orlando community again is, in my opinion, the most urgent challenge the Magic is facing. I think a good way of doing so, apart from winning games obviously, is stability. The last couple of years the Magic often resembled a drive-in restaurant, with players, coaches and even GM's coming and going. Therefore I'd like to know if the Magic have many trades in store or not. Because we have the talent, don't you agree? All we have to do now is water the flowers and I believe they will blossom. Thank you for taking time to communicate with the fans!
Otis: Mathieu, I couldn't have said it better myself. We are building on what we have. See you at TD WATERHOUSE.
Question from Spenser (7/22): Otis, what does Keyon Dooling bring to this team, in terms of defense? Can't wait to see who you get for Francis...praying it's young talent and picks. Thanks.
Otis: Spenser, that's a nice way of asking me if we are trading Steve. Nope, nope, nope.
Question from Freddy (7/23): Dear Otis, it seems that the media is implying you guys made up your mind on a point guard with Dooling, even though he seems like a promising player. I don't think he is the right fit for this team. So I ask you why not go with some one like Damon Stoudamire? Some one that could take over right away.
Otis: Freddy, thanks for your input and support, keep coming with the ideas on how we make our team better. I like the parts we having in place...tweaking. Go Magic!
Comment from Jeff (7/26): Hello Mr Smith. This is Jeff, a Magic fan. I am just suggesting to take a look at the former star (and your former player) Shawn Kemp. I might be a little out of line in this one but it will not hurt to add another veteran guy in your roster. Shawn wants to prove something before he finally retires from basketball. He's really working out to prove his spot in the NBA. His agent said 5 or 6 teams expressed interest in him, and I hope the Magic is one of them. Shawn said (in an interview with a Seattle reporter) that he is weighing 280lbs and is nearing his "Seattle body". He is more focused, has a stable life and motivated to change his basketball career.
Otis: Wow! Jeff that's a name from the past I would have never expected. Keep them coming.
Question from Spenser (7/22): Otis, First of all, I truly appreciate you taking the time to respond to so many of the e-mails being sent. My question is this: Now knowing that I probably do not have the talent or skill to play in the NBA, my dream job would be that of a General Manager. Obviously you followed a different road than I would - first playing in the league, then working your way up the ranks of front office positions. How would a guy like me make it into the league with a front office gig, and then eventually become a GM? Have a terrific off-season, and let's do something big next year. Thanks.
Otis: The Orlando Magic and other NBA teams have great internship programs, that's a start. You got to get you foot in the door.
Question from Lamonte (7/22): Hey Otis I was just wondering, have you or Dave given any thought into re-aquiring Drew Gooden. From what I understand he is available, and he might be a good fit for the team if the plan is still to switch to a more fast break oriented offense. Marko Jaric would also be a good fit at point gaurd because of his size. What do you think? Keep up the good work. I can't wait for the season to start. The Vazquez pick was excellent by the way.
Otis: Well, I was on the manangement team that thought both Drew Gooden and the Orlando Magic could benefit from the change. I don't know if much has changed in a year. Plus, the power forward we have there now is pretty good.
Question from Mark (7/25): Hey O, Good luck on the upcoming season, as a Magic fan I will be hoping that we get in the playoffs this year. Do you see DeShawn Stevenson staying around long term? He is a diamond in the rough. Thanks.
P.S. Great move getting Dooling, but please keep Jameer.
Otis: I'm one DeShawn's biggest fans. I'm hoping he builds on the last half of the season.
Question from William (7/25): Mr. Smith, a few things...I live in New Mexico and was disappointed when the Magic passed up on Danny Granger. I don’t know what kind of player Vazquez is so I’ll wait until the season starts before making any judgments. I have heard that Doug Christie is unhappy in Orlando; will he be moved when Francis takes over at shooting guard? Besides the signing of Keyon Dooling will the Magic make any other moves during the free agency period?
Otis: Having a player like Steve will allow us to do some creative things with our team, I think if you look at our roster you with see players that can play more than one position. We would like to have another big to go with what we have but not in a hurry. Go Magic!
Question from Doug (7/24): Hey Mr. Smith, my name is Doug. How's it going? I happen to live in spain and teach English over [here] and I know all about Fran Vazquez and he is a good player and his defense is tenacious. You guys did the right thing because there are a lot of 1 and 2 guards around the league but it's hard to find a good big man. My only question is how will you fit Kenyon Dooling in when you want to develop Jameer?
Otis: We have not given up on Jameer. I love his game. But with that said, we are talking about moving Steve to the off guard position, and that leaves a first and second year player in Jameer and Travis.
Question from Orlando (7/24): Dear Otis, my name is Orlando and I am a high school teacher in the Tampa Bay area. There is a home bread guy name Steve Graham from Oklahoma State at 6-6 215 lbs. and has had a great summer camp at Las Vegas with the Suns summer team. My question to you is if a player that has been invited to play for another team like the Suns at Reebok and was an undrafted free-agent rookie can we ask him to show up for one of the Magic try outs? Second part of the question is why didn't we ask this guy to try out in the first place if he is from this area and we know his game? Thank you.
Otis: Most of the time, Orlando, that's not up to the Magic. The agent for a non-drafted player tries to place the player where he thinks he has the best chance of making the team.
Question from Anthony (7/24): Do you see Deshawn Stevenson as being a big impact on the incoming season for the Magic?
Otis: Anthony, I think if there's one player that will benefit the most from Coach Hill it will be DeShawn...expecting big things.
Question/Comment from Greg (7/24): Otis, I must say, I have been a Magic fan since 1989 and am currently a season ticket holder. And like the majority of the Magic fans, I too have suffered a MAJOR disapointment in the signing of coach Hill and the draft choice of Vasquez. First of all Otis, you and I both could have coached the Magic back in the day and won games with O'Neal and Hardaway. Those years were the only winning seasons that Hill has ever had as a coach and he screwed that up as well. What is so big about a guy that hasn't been a head coach in several years and did nothing but lose without Shaq and Penny? And who on earth is Vazquez? When you have been losers like the Magic for the past few years, you go with no brainers in the draft (ie Maye, Green etc.) not some foreign reach like Vazquez. Come on Otis, how could the fans question either of those players? Answer, they couldn't!
Otis: Again, I love our fans and their knowledge of basketball, but the reason we hired Brian Hill had little to do with the success he had as the Magic coach in the early 90's at least for me. Although I was around the team in those days and there are things he did as a coach to get Shaq and Penny to play on the same team at the same time that were pretty good. However, none of this is why Brian Hill was our pick as the head coach of the Orlando Magic. Defense and attention to detail, and passion for coaching are some of the things Coach Hill will bring to this team. Now on our draft pick...it's hard for the fan to understand the international players but trust me Fran is a very good pick. Stay with us, basketball is world wide, we can't be short-sighted on where we find talent. The truth is the Orlando Magic have to win.
Question from Rob (7/21): Why are the Magic trying to sign point guards when they have 3? Wouldn't it make sense to get a shooting guard so you don't have such a small backcourt? Also, can you update us on Kelvin Cato's condition?
Otis: Well if you look at our backcourt, we need some help. With the plans in the works of moving Steve off the ball, it leaves a gap at the point position. Cato is doing fine, he is well ahead of schedule with the rehab of his shoulder, so he shouldn't miss any of the season.
Comment from Erik (7/20>: Look man, I am the biggest MAGIC fan out there. I mean I love this team. I watch every game and go to every one that I can. I have been there through the ups and the downs (sometimes it seems like more downs). I am all about the better of the team. So in my opinon I think we should keep the roster the same this year so they can get familiar with each other. GOOOOOO!!!!!!MAAAAAGGGIIICCC!!!! A true "Magic" blue fan.
Otis: Thanks, "true Magic blue fan."
Question from Jose (7/20): Hey Otis, I've heard that Mike Finely has had his eye on one of the two Florida teams, and on New Jersey. If he gets waived do you think we will have a good chance in signing him?
Otis: Well, it's not that simple and a lot of things have to happen for that to be considered.
Question from Darlynn (7/22): Mr. Smith, I must say as a Magic fan, I was very disappointed in our draft. Everything I read had Fran as a second round talent. What was it in him that you saw to select him number 11 when everybody else had him as second rounder? Also I know that we will have a lot of big contracts coming off the books next year with the likes of Battie and Cato and Christie. Is there any big-name players that will become free agents next year that might excite you?
Otis: Interesting...must have a little faith...and stop reading the Internet. Look at the list of next year's free agents and let me know what you like.
Question from Trent (7/22): Dear Otis, I was so exited when 10 teams passed up on Gerald Green I just knew the second coming of Tracy McGrady would end up back in Orlando...and maybe even be the saving of the Orlando frachise...(with a little luck)...but when the the commisioner said the words Fran Vazquez...I couldn't have been more bummed. All I heard about the Magic was drafting another shooting guard to start or even back up (if Fracis stays at sg). Green is as athletic as they come. I just can't see a resonable excuse for passing that up. It seems like drafting for needs never pans out. Drafting on talent usually does. I'll always believe in the Magic. I can just see him torching us every time we play the Celtics. No matter what tho...I'll always believe in the Magic.
Otis: Gerald Green is a very good young talented basketball player, but he wasn't as high on our draft board as others. We pick a player that will help us in the future.
From SerafiniSM (7/21): Otis, I know I'm not an NBA insider and basketball is not my livelihood, but how can you not see that Jameer Nelson is the point guard for this team? Diener was a very nice pick up but do we really need to be courting Duhon and others that I read about? Give him a chance - he's a winner! Please answer this to set my mind (and other Magic fans' minds) at ease.
Otis: I would hope that the signing of another point guard, doesn't mean we don't have faith in Jameer Nelson. We are just very thin in the back court. Between you and me, Jameer will find a way to be on the court. I don't think you can find a bigger Jameer fan than me.
Questions from Nathan (7/21): First a g'day from down under. Congrats on your position with Dave. My only source of information on the game and the Magic for that matter only comes online as there is no coverage whatsoever of the game itself here in oz. I have followed the Magic since the day I picked up the ball, roughly 13 years, I'm only 20. My love for the Magic blossomed in the days of Penny, O'Neal and Anderson, and then cooled downed. But I feel this love coming back again. Why? Simple. Dwight Howard. But enough story telling. My question is based around Travis Diener. One word I found to describe his performance from the summer league was impressive, that too for Mason Jr. My opinion is only gathered around stats. What are your impressions of the two on the summer league and for their future in the Magic line-up? Cause I think we found some treasures. Cheers mate.
Otis: Nathan, we like Travis a lot which is why we drafted him at 38. So we are hoping he brings some of his toughness to our team. He can make plays for himself and more importantly for people, so we think he has a good chance. As for Roger Mason, we like him, but then do you like him as much as what you already have on our roster? Sometimes it's a numbers game, we have to look at the position and [determine] will he be able to make our team. Nathan, it was summer league. I look at summer league and say if a player plays well in summer league, they have a chance. So I think Travis has a chance.
Questions from siddiqsa (7/21): Is Grant Hill getting traded and are we moving from Orlando?
Otis: Nice, quick and to the point. I like that...so I will do the same...No and no.
Questions from Bill (7/20): Otis, first of all, I appreciate your candor and openness in answering the questions of us diehard fans. My question: Who do you see as the shooters on the current Magic roster, save for Pat Garrity? And Pat struggled with his shot last year and again is returning from injury. So, who knocks down the clutch bomb when we're trailing by 3 with 5 seconds left or hits the open shot when the kickout from Dwight's double-team comes? It seems we really missed that once Cuttino was moved last season. Good luck this offseason.
Otis: Bill, if we had a weakness on the offensive end it may have been shooting, but we think that Pat will have a better season all around. I believe Turk can shoot the ball with some range, and the style of play (inside out) will get the team more open looks in range. I'm more concerned about our ability to stop the other team from scoring...DEFENSE!
Question from Antonio: Mr. Smith I was concerned because it seems as if the Magic are content to enter next season with the current roster we have. Is that true, or do the Magic plan to trade or sign free agent players to up grade our roster? Thank you.
Otis: Trades and free agents and the draft are ways in which all teams make their teams better and we are working on all of those things to make our team better. We will not make trades [just] because we feel like we have to get in the game. We got in last year. If there's a deal that makes sense for our team we will make the deal. We are working the free agent process, with the hopes of signing a player or two. But the biggest difference with this year's team [compared to the] last is time and the hiring of a coaching staff. Go Magic!
Question from Alberto (7/20): Mr. Smith, I am a diehard Magic fan since you guys drafted Nick Anderson and had Dennis Scott. I catch a lot a flak living in NJ and being a fan of the Magic. I do not mind it, I just do not understand why you guys have not gone after any free agents? I was extremely disappointed with the trading of Cuttino for Christie. I love my team, we do have a good core of players, like Stevie Franchise, Dwight, Hedo, Pat Garrity, and Jameer. But I think you guys have to make some ripples in the water and bring in someone that will rock this place up a bit. We will see in the future. Great luck on this season. Playoffs here we come!
Otis: Alberto, because you don't read about things in the papers, doesn't mean it's not happening. We are working the process. Hang in there NJ we are on our way.
Question from Josh (7/20): Hello Mr. Smith, my name is Josh. There is a rumor that Grant Hill will be traded to Boston for Paul Pierce? Is this true because I think Grant Hill is one of the best small forwards in the league even with his ankle problem. One more thing there is another rumor that the magic are going to sign free agent Damon Staudamire? I think with the signing of Damon Will Really help are team on the offence and defense side. Moving Steve to the two and Damon to the 1 will be a heck of a back court even with the lack of size do you agree?
Otis: Please stop reading the chat room stuff. Rumors, Rumors. I have heard them all but mostly from our fans. Think about this: we have been with Grant since day one through his ups and his downs, and now he's on and up (best basketball is ahead of him). Why [trade him] now? But that's a first...trading Grant...that's funny! As for the other rumor, we are looking to add a point to our team. So, it's half true. Stay out of the chat rooms
Question from Honker36 (7/20): Hello Mr. Smith, I was wondering since both Allan Houston and Michael Finely are about to be released who would you rather sign?
Otis: I love Magic fans because like Dave, Brian and myself they want to win. With that said, they are thinking of ways to get their favorite team better. Don't ever lose the passion for your team. It's never that easy, but keep the ideas coming.
Question from Julio (7/20): Otis, why wasn't Clifford Ray retained in the staff if he is such a positive influence on Dwight and did a good job in his first year? I wouldn't think his salary is that much to begin with that. So why not keep him?
Otis: Julio, this was very hard for me as well, to see Clifford go, because I worked with Clifford in Golden State before the Magic. However, when you hire a head coach, you have to give him the ability to hire his own coaching staff or it won't work. Clifford interviewed with Coach Hill and Brian wanted to go in a different direction -- and that's hiring Mark Bryant to work with our post players. His recent experience of playing in the league will help Dwight. If we thought Dwight's development would suffer we would have retained "big" Clifford. Dwight will have a bigger season this year than last. Remember, change for the sake of change is not good. But this will be very good for the Magic long term.
Question from Bob (7/20): The Magic seemed to lose games last season because of poor team defense and a high turnover rate. Isn't that primarily a coaching issue? I hope it's not just wishful thinking but I'm looking forward to a season of heart, hustle and on-court discipline. It seems that improvements in these areas, using the talent we already have, would move us into the playoffs. Your comments please.
Otis: Well, Bob I think we will improve on defense this season, that was one of the reasons Brian Hill was hired as the head coach. Defense and accountability will be the theme of the season. I know we can outscore most teams in this league, but at some point, we have to be able to stop the other team from scoring. This will be a fun season...I'm getting excited just thinking about the possibilities.
Question/Comment from Mark (7/20): Mr. Smith, Welcome back to the team! Glad to see someone with a lot of basketball knowledge in the position you're in. Who, of all the Magic players, do you think will have the greatest impact on the team this year? Thanks and good fortune to you and the team.
Otis: Well a lot of our players had a sub-par season last year mostly due to all the changes that were made. So, with that said, we are expecting all of our players to have a better season, but if I had to pick one, I will have to say Dwight Howard. I don’t think our fans have seen what he can do. He will be a big time player in this league if he stays on track.
Question/Comments from Britt (7/19): Otis, as a season ticket holder, I want to say you get a failing grade for communicating with the fans. The Magic website is as exciting as dirt! Why should I believe it will get better? Your silence may be shrewd, but it is slow death to your fans. There is no outlet for Magic fans since WDBO dropped the Magic--at least we had one Monday a week for information. You want feedback, here it is -- how are going to sell magic game tickets when there is no news how we are going to be better? Tell me how many season tickets you sold when "Mr. Excitement, Brian Hill" was named head coach? Who is going to step up and be a cheerleader and an information leader for the Magic? Britt, season ticket holder and Magic Fan
Otis: Britt, I like the fact that you have the hunger for the knowledge of what your team is doing in the off-season to get better. You sound like a well educated fan. It is very hard to tell you everything we are trying to do in the off season. We want our fans to know, we want you to share the excitement of the new season with us. The competition doesn’t just stop at the last game of the season. We spend the entire off season trying to beat the other 29 teams as well. And, you may not think we do, but most teams read everything that is written about another team hoping that you tip your hand in your local papers. So we play things close to the vest. The bottom line, Britt, you know and I know, we have to win basketball games. Whether we tell you everything or tell you nothing, we have to win games. You want to beat the other teams and cities as much as I do. It’s called pride. Winning 40, 45, games is not good enough…I want a championship. Sorry, it’s call PRIDE. We will win….and it’s not the same...you will see the difference.
Question from Chris (7/17): Hi Otis, I think you made a great point in one of your earlier emails regarding Mario Kasun. He seemed to do pretty well as a rookie last year and definitely showed some skill. I have a two-part question regarding Grant Hill...Do you know if he has been able to get his legs stronger during this offseason so far? I have a feeling that once he gets some of that leg strength back he will have much more explosion in his game and come close to his old self. Do you agree, or do you think that he is too old at this point to even come close to that? Thanks!
Otis: We are looking for Grant to have a big season for us. Did you know that this is the first summer that Grant Hill can work on Basketball and not worry so much about rehabbing his ankle?! I think Mr. Hill's best basketball is in front of him...so yes he is getting his strength back in his legs.
Question from Yvonne (Washington, D.C.) (7/15): Mr. Smith, you bypassed what were considered very talented college and high school players in this years draft by selecting Fran Vasquez. Will he be a part of our team this year and, if so, what do you expect his role may be on our team this year? Considering that Howard is our low post star, where does Vasquez rank among the rest of our low post players?
Otis: Yvonne, you ask a very good question, but no matter who we would have drafted this year we would have duplicated talent. We thought we could use the size, he is an energy big, runs the floor, fights for rebounds, makes shots with his back to the basket. He will be a part of our team this season, and since we don't know our starting line up to date, it hard to say how he will be used. With that said, I can see him getting 10 or so minutes a game. Why Fran? We have two of our post players with expiring contracts at the end of the season as well, so we have to plan ahead. We are looking for [Fran] to have a good year for us.
Question from Dave (7/15): There has been a lot of talk about big men and Howard going to center, but no one has mentioned Mario Kasun. Are there any plans to develop Mario? I thought he did pretty well for a rookie filling in when Cato or Batie were injured.
Otis: We are expecting big things from Mario this upcoming season...this is one of the players that not very many people talk about, but believe me we are expecting big things, he adds to our depth in the low post.
Question from Michael (7/15): Do you think the Orlando Magic could get Gilbert Arenas for Steve Francis since Arenas averaged more points than Francis last season?
Otis: They are two of the same type of player, both of which are favorites of mine….I like them both where they are…
Question from Maurice (7/12/05): I am hearing all of these rumors of Steve Francis being traded. How true is that?
Answer from Otis: No, not at all, he is major part of our team, but rumors always start this time of the year because teams are trying to get better...but no on the trading of Steve.
Question from Rob (7/13/05): Just a quick question, don't you think that Nelson and Francis in the backcourt is just too small? I feel that Francis does play big for his size but guarding some of these guys like Allen, Bryant, Pierce etc.. is a bit too much?
Answer from Otis: Rob, since Magic Johnson came into the league, we have been concerned about the size of the player, but there have been some very good small players that have been through this league, so don't spend too much time focusing on size. By the way, our starting line up is not set yet, so I don't spend too much time in that area. If you are asking me 'can they play together' the answer is 'yes' without question. Not very many teams are posting up their guards in this league. If they are, that means someone else on that team is not getting the ball....I like that too. The All-Star guards you named in your example are such a big part of their teams' production, that as a coach you have to design ways for the team to slow them down. The one area you will see the Orlando Magic improve this season is TEAM defense....Thanks for your interest.
Comment from Ivan (7/12/05): I have been a Magic fan since the year 89, thru the good & the bad times. I will ask you as a fan to do one thing. Please don’t let good talent go away. I am just frustrated in how we developed good players and let them go. Example. Atkins, Miller, Wallace, O’Neal, McGrady, Armstrong, Webber, etc. You know who they are. The success on a great team is not only surrounding your 2 starters with talented players only, but players that also give a good chemistry to the team. Have Heart, passion and don’t play just for them. Example, Francis. You can notice on the body language on his teammates that when he is on the court he plays for only one person and that is him. I think you have a great point guard on Nelson. Not big enough but has a great Heart. Also Howard will make a great center in a couple of years. You need a good Shooting guard to help out. There is a couple of players that can help on that. Example, L. Hughes, M. Redd, C. Mobley, L. Harris. You have a whole bunch of players that you have to get rid of. They are just taking space. I know injuries are sad but they affect a team too much to keep them. You said it yourself. We have the foundation in Howard and Nelson. So it is in you to make a difference. Thank you for your time! I hope you are the one that will make the difference. There is Hope for the Team.
Answer from Otis: Ivan, it's so good that we have so many passionate fans that love Magic basketball, and we are going to need them all when the season starts. I completely understand not wanting to let talent get away from you, but you have to agree that sometimes - not all the time - a change of address works for some players...he may fit into another system better. In the history of sports every team has let some good players get away, not by their design, sometimes it's free agency, player trades, etc. There are also times when making a trade for something you want or need that you may have to lose a player you really don't want to lose. At the time of the trade for Grant Hill for the players they traded for him, you can't tell me at the time even with Grant on cruches, that you didn't think it was a great deal. But who knew things would turn out the way that they did. You had the same vision that Gabe had (the GM at the time of the trade). It's easy to say now, that we should have kept this guy or that guy.
