Mistakes are never a welcomed sight, but there were several Orlando Magic coaches and players eagerly looking on Friday night to see how rookie guard Victor Oladipo responded to a bit of early-game adversity.
Oladipo’s first possession ended in a turnover when Memphis’ Jerryd Bayless knocked the ball away from him. And the second wasn’t much better Oladipo was called for a travel following a pump fake. And when Oladipo missed a couple of difficult layups in traffic, his night was shaping up to be similar to his struggles in Houston two nights earlier.
But what Oladipo did next said a lot about the rookie’s resiliency and resolve. A dazzling dunk off a heads up backdoor cut got him out of his rut and seemed to calm his nerves. Eventually, he confidently stroked two 3-pointers and eight free throws and finished with a team-high 22 points.
