McGrady Flourishes in February
NEW YORK, March 1 - Tracy McGrady of the Orlando Magic, who currently ranks seventh in the league in scoring at 27.1 ppg, today was named the NBA Player of the Month for games played in February.
McGrady, who scored 30 or more points five times and 40-plus points once in the month, averaged a team-high 29.3 points, 7.8 rebounds, 4.4 assists, 1.55 blocks and 1.53 steals in February. Here is a look at some of McGrady's highlights as he led the Magic to a 9-3 record in February: Saturday, February 3: Recorded game-highs of 29 points, five steals and five assists while grabbing a team-high 15 rebounds in the Magic's 96-84 win over the visiting Atlanta Hawks. Sunday, February 18: Scored a game-high 32 points while handing out five assists during a 96-88 win over the visiting New York Knicks. Tuesday, February 20: Scored a career-high 44 points while adding nine rebounds and four assists to his game totals as the Magic lost to the Phoenix Suns 110-104. Started for the Eastern Conference in the NBA All-Star Game in Washington, D.C. Led the Magic in scoring 10 times, in rebounding six times and in assists four times.
Other candidates for NBA Player of the Month were Charlotte's Jamal Mashburn, Houston's Steve Francis, Los Angeles Clippers' Lamar Odom, Milwaukee's Ray Allen, New Jersey's Stephon Marbury, Philadelphia's Allen Iverson, Phoenix's Shawn Marion and Utah's Karl Malone.
