Waste Management and Magic Take Student's Message on Road
July 28, 2009
ORLANDO -- A cheer went up from more than 100 Millennia Elementary School fifth-graders as Waste Management Public Sector Services Manager Jim Swan, STUFF the Orlando Magic mascot and Orlando Magic Dancers pulled down a green velvet curtain to reveal classmate Leonardo Moreira’s artwork on a garbage truck. The crowd had gathered April 7 on the school’s bus loop to see Leonardo’s drawing of two boys responsibly disposing of waste, which took first place in the seventh-annual Waste Management Inc. of Florida’s Think Green® Art Contest.
Leonardo’s artwork was selected out of 319 entries received from 20 Orange County public elementary schools. His prizes were four tickets to a Magic basketball game and a team-autographed basketball. Waste Management presented Millennia Elementary art teacher Vivian Alfonso with $300 for the school’s art program, while the students received autographs and high-fives from STUFF and the Orlando Magic Dancers.
“Waste Management strives to bring the messages of reduce, reuse and recycle to Orange County’s children through our annual art contest,” Swan said. “This year, the Orlando Magic joined Waste Management in spreading this important initiative. Leonardo’s artwork displays not only this young artist’s talent, but the idea that even small actions are an important part of thinking ‘green.’ ”
The Magic also donated a Rashard Lewis autographed photo and a Hedo Turkoglu autographed cap, which were presented to the contest’s second- and third-place winners respectively.
