RECAP
The Memphis Grizzlies did not look like a team with a 6-16 record as they handed the Magic a 123-119 loss despite a 31 point 20 rebound performance from Dwight Howard.
Orlando (17-8) held a three point (88-85) lead heading into the fourth quarter but thanks to Rudy Gay's career-high 32 points, the Grizzlies were able to take control of the game and hold on for a four point victory.
Although they lost, the Magic had a good offensive night shooting 51 percent, scoring 60 points in the paint, and took better care of the ball committing just 14 turnovers.
As mentioned, Dwight Howard had another monster night posting his third career 30 point, 20 rebound game and Hedo Turkoglu added 24 points.
The Magic will try to get back on the winning track as they head back out onto the road to face the Dallas Mavericks this coming Monday.
FOURTH QUARTER
Dooling starts the final quarter off with a jumper but Rudy Gay is starting to take over this game as be scores six straight baskets including a highlight dunk off of a steal. Gay has put his Grizzlies ahead 91-90 forcing a Van Gundy timeout three minutes into the fourth.
Darko Milicic in his return to Orlando has just four points and picks up his fifth foul hacking Dwight sending Howard to the line. Howard makes both but the Grizz answer holding onto their one point lead.
I think Van Gundy told the Magic during the last timeout to get the ball inside to Dwight because the last three Magic possession have gone into Dwight and all the Grizzlies can do is foul him.
Rudy Gay nails a three giving him a game high 28 points on 12-of-18 shooting as Memphis clings to a 96-95 lead.
Dwight Howard gets the Amway crowd on their feet throwing down a nice alley-oop from Jameer Nelson. Howard gets another bucket and this game has become the Dwight Howard versus Rudy Gay as both young players have taken over. Howard has 28 points and 19 rebounds, and Rudy Gay has 28 of his own.
Howard gets fouled count the basket and Memphis calls a timeout with the Amway crowd on their feet. The Magic lead 103-101 with 5:46 left in the game.
Kyle Lowry ties the game back up with a long range jumper. Both teams have shot lights out tonight converting on over half their field goal attempts.
Mike Miller puts the Grizzlies up by four at 107-103 with a three-pointer from the left corner. Van Gundy calls a timeout with his team trailing by four with just under four mintues to go.
Dwight has 30 points and 20 rebounds which marks the ninth time he has tallied at least 30 points and 15 rebounds in a game this season and the second time he has done it on back-to-back nights. Long story short...Dwight Howard is not human.
The Magic trail 110-104 as we approach two minutes to go and Jameer converts a huge three-point play to cut the lead to three points at the two minute warning.
The Magic desperately need a stop but can't get one as Rudy Gay scores his 30th point of the night on a turn-around jumper in the lane.
Turk answers with a pair of free-throws and the Magic finally get a stop and control the ball down three with a mintue left.
Turk can't convert on a three and Juan Carlos Navarro makes the Magic pay drilling a triple from the left wing to give Memphis a 115-109 lead with 46 seconds to play.
J.J. misses a three and the Grizzlies control the ball and the game as the Magic will be forced to foul from here on out. The Magic appear to be headed for their third straight loss at Amway Arena as the crowd begins to head for the exits.
Rudy Gay hits a pair of free-throws and J.J. answers with a long two making the score 117-111 Grizzlies with 30 seconds left.
Another pair of Memphis free-throws gets answered by a Magic bucket as the lead is down to five.
Stoudamire makes a pair from the line and the Magic trail 121-114 with 15 seconds left.
A couple points here and there and the Magic drop their third straight at home.
Final: Memphis Grizzlies 123, Orlando Magic 119
THIRD QUARTER
Let's hope the Magic can come out in the second half like they finished the first and Jameer Nelson gets the team off to a good start burying a jumper from the top of the key. Dwight splits a pair from the charity stripe and the Magic lead is up to seven at 62-55.
I have a feeling Van Gundy really got into the team at halftime about playing with more engery because the Magic have come out this half very active at both ends of the floor.
Rudy Gay converts on a three-point play but the Magic still lead 64-60 three minutes into the third period.
Damon Stoudamire and Hedo Turkoglu trade threes making the score 67-63 Magic. Mo Evans gets a nice hustle tip-in and Turk nets two from the free-throw line giving the Magic a five point lead four minutes into the third.
Nelson buries a three from the right corner but the Grizz answer with back-to-back buckets to cut the Magic lead to 73-70.
Rudy Gay ties the ballgame at 73 splitting a pair of free-throws but Dwight answers with a hoop of his own. Rudy Gay once again ties the game back up with a pretty floater over the outstretched arms of Dwight Howard.
Howard makes a pair of free-throws as Dwight has shot a decent 7-of-11 from the charity stripe tonight. The teams go back and forth trading buckets as Hedo ties the ballgame at 79 with his game high 20th point.
The Magic lead 81-80 with 2:21 left in the third as the Away crowd is just waiting for the Magic to take over this game.
Juan Carlos Navarro has other plans as he nails a three-pointer to give the Grizz a 85-83 lead but James Augustine answers to tie up the game at 85.
J.J. makes a nice move through the lane and finishes with a layup to give the Magic a three point lead going into the final period.
End of Third: Orlando Magic 88, Memphis Grizzlies 85
SECOND QUARTER
Hedo starts off the second quarter with a short fadeaway jumper in the lane to give the lead back to the Magic at 31-30.
Dwight Howard starts the second quarter on the bench as he is well on his way to his 21st double-double of the season with his 10 points and seven rebounds.
With Dwight on the bench, the Magic are looking for Hedo on the left block and a double down on Hedo leaves Bogans open at the top of the key where he buries his second three of the game. Bogans has 10 points on 4-of-5 shooting.
The Grizz get back-to-back hoops and take a five point lead at 39-34 three minutes into the second period.
Hakim Warrick and Andre Brown each stroke jumpers forcing Van Gundy to call a timeout with the Grizzlies ahead 43-36. The Grizzlies have shot the ball tremendously well converting on 55 percent of their field goal attempts.
Jameer Nelson comes out of the timeout and takes the ball to the hoop strong making a layup. Mike Miller answers but J.J. Redick hits a three to answer Miller.
Bogans puts back a Redick miss to cut the Memphis lead to four at 47-43 but Mike Miller with his 12th point puts his team back up by six.
Nelson and Turk finish at the rim forcing a Memphis timeout with the Magic still trailing 49-47 with 4:50 to go in the half.
The Magic must see something different in the Grizzley defense because most of their points tonight have come via the drive and finish at the rim with 30 of their 49 points coming inside the paint.
Turk hits a three giving the Magic back the lead at 52-51 with three minutes left in the half. Dwight grabs an offensive rebound, his 12th rebound of the game, and feeds a cutting Mo Evans for a slam.
Turk hits another three from the right wing giving the Magic a four point advantage and Keyon Dooling adds to the lead with a jumper. The Magic lead 59-53 with one minute left in the half.
The half ends with the Magic ahead by four at 59-55.
Halftime: Orlando Magic 59, Memphis Grizzlies 55
FIRST QUARTER
What’s up Magic fans, welcome to Amway Arena as the Magic look to start a winning streak as they square off against the Memphis Grizzlies.
The two teams meet at center court as former teammates Dwight Howard and Darko Milicic compete for tonight’s opening tip.
Howard wins the tip and the Magic control tonight’s opening possession. As stated below, Maurice Evans gets the start tonight and immediately makes his presence felt drawing a foul and heading to the line. Mo connects on both and the Magic take the early lead.
Bogans gets an easy bucket and Dwight gets two of his own forcing the Grizzlies to call a timeout with the Magic ahead 8-2.
Dwight looks to be active early as he throws down a couple of easy dunks. The Magic are off to a great start getting easy buckets and playing with energy on the defensive end.
Jameer gets an easy bucket but the Grizzlies answer with a monster dunk from Stromile Swift. The Magic lead 14-10 with 5:52 left in the opening period.
Jameer and Hedo get yet another two easy buckets as the Magic increase their lead to 18-12. It seems like the Magic's game-plan tonight is to not settle for the outside jump shot but rather be aggressive and take the ball to the basket. The Magic average the second most three-point attempts a game but have only attempted two so far.
Former Magic player Mike Miller strokes back-to-back threes catapulting his Grizzlies to a 22-19 lead.
Keyon Dooling gets another basket going to the hoop but Mike Miller answers with two of his own causing Stan Van Gundy to call a timeout with his team trailing 24-21 with 2:52 to go in the first.
Memphis' leading scorer Rudy Gay nails a jumper with the shot clock winding down to give the Grizzlies a four point advantage. Bogans answers on the next possession making the Magic's first three-pointer of the night cutting the Memphis lead to one.
Dooling ties the ballgame up at 27 with a pair of free-throws but Kyle Lowry quickly puts the Grizzlies back ahead with a three from the corner.
Bogans gets into the lane for a layup to trim the Memphis lead down to one as the quarter ends with the Magic trailing 30-29.
End of First: Memphis Grizzlies 30, Orlando Magic 29
SHOOTAROUND
After coming back to Orlando early this morning from Charlotte, the Magic had a 45 minute walk through at approximately 4 PM this afternoon to prepare for tonight's opponent the Memphis Grizzlies.
The Magic, coming off a much needed victory against the Bobcats, will be without the services of starting power forward Rashard Lewis for tonight's contest due to neck spasms.
Starting in Lewis' place will be Maurice Evans who starts at small forward bumping Hedo Turkoglu to power forward.
Memphis will also be without one of their key players tonight, starting center Pau Gasol.
Head coach Stan Van Gundy emphasized that he wants to see more energy and effort from his team tonight.
"I told the guys that I have been really upset with their effort lately and it is something I expect to see out of them tonight."
The Magic will look to take advantage of a 6-16 Memphis team who are coming off a home loss to the Clippers last night.
Tonight's game will be important for the Magic as they will face the likes of Dallas, Houston, and Utah this coming week.
PREGAME
The Magic enter Amway Arena Saturday trying to get their first home win in three weeks as they face the 6-16 Memphis Grizzlies.
Orlando's last victory at Amway Arena came on November 24th when they defeated the Miami Heat 120-99 before heading out on their successful West Coast trip in which they won four out of five games, bringing a 16-4 record back home last week.
Since then, the team has struggled to find their mark shooting just 42 percent from the field over their last five games, second worst in the NBA over that span.
The Magic will have a great opportunity to gain back their shooting stroke against the Grizzlies who have allowed the second highest opponent field goal percentage this season at 47 percent.
Coming into Friday night's game, the Magic led the league in most turnovers throughout their last five outings turning over the ball 19.2 times a game.
Orlando must take extra care of the basketball against a Memphis team who ranks fourth in the NBA in turnover differential (+ 2.14).
Memphis is led by rising star Rudy Gay (18.7 ppg, 5.6 rpg), former all-star Pau Gasol (17.3 ppg, 7.7 rpg), and former Magic and University of Florida standout, Mike Miller (15.0 ppg, 7.3 rpg).
Another former Magic player, Darko Milicic, returns to Amway for the first since leaving Orlando and signing a free-agent contract with Memphis this past July.
Milicic has played and started in 13 games for the Grizzlies this season averaging 8.0 points and 6.4 rebounds in 28.2 minutes per game.
Saturday night's match-up should be a high scoring contest as each team ranks in the top ten in scoring, and the Magic have a great chance of winning if they hit their season scoring average of 103 points because the Grizzlies are just 3-13 when allowing 100 plus points to their opponents.
The match-up against the Grizzlies may be exactly what the Magic need in order to improve their 5-4 record at home and regain their winning form.
MAGIC INJURY REPORT
Tony Battie – Out, torn rotator cuff, left shoulder – underwent successful surgery on Oct. 24; will likely miss the entire season.
