It was just one play in a night full of firsts for prized Orlando Magic rookie Victor Oladipo, but it was one that provided some insight into why the team is confident the former college shooting guard can make the switch to NBA point guard.
Oladipo rubbed off a screen to draw two defenders to him and then almost effortlessly flipped a one-handed pass between two New Orleans Pelicans’ players. The perfect pocket pass found Magic newcomer Jason Maxiell in stride and resulted in a thunderous dunk.
Oladipo then calmly jogged back up the court in ho-hum fashion as if this transition to the point guard position is a breeze. The No. 2 overall pick from last June’s NBA Draft had plenty of highlights in the first preseason game of his NBA career, but the perfect pocket pass was easily the most exhilarating in New Orleans’ 99-95 defeat of the Magic at Jacksonville’s Veterans Memorial Arena.
