ORLANDO -- As the old adage goes, practice makes perfect.

For Orlando Magic Dancer hopefuls, there is no saying more important and timely.

Magic Dancer pre-audition classes have given dozens of women a chance to learn some new moves, brush up on familiar ones and offer each of them a final chance to prepare for Saturday’s First Round auditions.

From hip hop to sassy jazz, these classes are helping them become more confident with various styles. Starting this Saturday, judges will evaluate each dancer based on dance technique and style, personality, professionalism, physical fitness, enthusiasm and much more.

Tuesday’s class, in particular, taught by Chris “Casper” Lupis focused on hip hop. Through his experience as a dancer and instructor, Lupis has seen what works and what doesn’t when getting ready for auditions.

“I’ve been a part of this process for a long time and I’ve known girls that made it on their first try, known girls that have made it on their fifth try and then girls that have never made it so you have no idea what you are capable of until you try it,” Lupis said.

“If you don’t make it the first time, try it the second time, third time and if you do make it it’s an amazing experience,” he added. “Sometimes working for something and trying multiple times is your path.”

Only 30 women will advance past the first round and 20 will be named to the 2016-17 Magic Dance Team. For some, it’s the beginning of a dream experience. For others, a dream will soon be relived.

“I’m looking forward to learning a lot and taking a lot of chances and growing as a dancer and a person,” said Desiree, who is trying out for the Magic Dance Team for the first time.

“Performing for my favorite basketball team,” she said when asked what she would most look forward to if she made the team.

After First Round auditions, the 30 finalists will have sit-down interviews with judges and former Magic Dancers, participate in fitness training classes and then perform final routines at Amway Center on Thursday, July 28. Throughout next week, you can vote for the finalists you think should make the team and you can also watch finals live on OrlandoMagic.com or in person (admission is free).

Being part of the Magic Dance Team includes much more than just dancing. It’s an opportunity to play a major role in the Central Florida community.

“Being a dancer for the Magic is one of the most rewarding experiences,” said Nicole, a veteran hoping to make the team for the fifth straight season. “The memories that you make and the people that you meet is amazing. None of us take it for granted.”
