ORLANDO -- While it wasn’t easy for the judges to select just 30 of the 84 first round hopefuls on Saturday, it’s apparent there is no shortage of talent trying out for the 2016-17 Orlando Magic Dance Team.

From here, it’s a countdown – and a lot of hard work from the finalists – to determine which 20 will represent the squad for this upcoming season.

Over the next several days, the finalists will have sit-down interviews with judges and former Magic dancers, participate in fitness training classes and then learn and perform final routines at Amway Center on Thursday. Throughout the week, you can vote for the finalists you think should make the team and you can also watch finals live on OrlandoMagic.com or in person (admission is free).

While advancing past the first round is an accomplishment, it’s clear none of the 30 finalists are satisfied. Half of them were on the team last season and hope to relive some of the best experiences of their lives. For the other half, an opportunity to join the sisterhood and play a major role in the Central Florida community is at stake.

Lily, a two-year Magic Dancer veteran, is ecstatic just thinking about what could be ahead.

“Bonding with my teammates and getting to know a whole new group of girls,” she said when asked what she would most look forward to if she made this season’s squad.

There is no one specific way to prepare for the days ahead. But, those who have auditioned before will use that experience to their advantage.

What’s recommended? Well, getting plenty of sleep in between rehearsals and training and maintaining a healthy, nutritious diet are essential. Also, it’s crucial to be ambitious, creative and extra inspired.

While it may be a tad more challenging for first time finalists considering it’s a brand new experience, they feel very confident in their abilities.

“Hard work is definitely going to pay off in the end,” said Mackenzie, who is auditioning for the Magic Dance Team for the first time. “I’m really excited to hopefully get out there and share the love for the Magic.”

There is a lot that goes into deciding who will make the team. Judges look at dance technique and style, obviously. But additionally, showmanship, personality, enthusiasm, professionalism and personal appearance will be assessed.

For the 20 that wake up Friday morning as 2016-17 Magic Dance Team members, the next year will be filled with incredible memories and exciting experiences.

“I personally love doing activities for the community,” said Cassie, a two-year veteran and finalist for this year’s team. “Whether it’s working for kids, the elderly. Those are some of the best times to share your passion for the Magic.”
