Josh Cohen’s Analysis: While rebuilding in the NBA doesn’t necessarily have precise developmental stages, we often can distinguish where particular teams are at during a renovation. As we’ve seen this season, the Orlando Magic have made very impressive strides after overhauling the roster last year.

The main pieces acquired in the once criticized, now celebrated Dwight Howard trade, including Nikola Vucevic, Arron Afflalo and Maurice Harkless, are all substantially improved from a year ago.

Though currently healing from a sprained ankle, Tobias Harris was a steal for the Magic when they attained him from the Bucks in last season’s J.J. Redick deal.

The decision to draft Victor Oladipo as opposed to any of the other notable rookies including Nerlens Noel, Ben McLemore and Trey Burke seems to have been a brilliant choice.

There is still plenty left on Orlando’s hopeful path back to championship contention. For now, let’s take a closer look at how some of the league’s present title contenders succeeded during their own transition periods.
