Otis Smith was chosen by the Magic in their 1989 Expansion Draft and spent three seasons with the team. Following his retirement from play, he spent two years in Orlando's community relations department.

After a few years with the Golden State Warriors, Smith has returned to the Magic as the director of player development. He assists in various aspects of the basketball operations department, including player development and scouting, while also assisting the team's community relations department.

With the upcoming Expansion Draft and NBA Draft, Otis is took time out to chat live with fans. See what he had to say about being picked in the expansion draft, the '88 dunk contest and much much more:

hedo (Orlando): Any updates on T-Mac? is he going to stay or be moved or has it not been decided yet?

Otis Smith: To this point, it has not been decided yet. We hope it will all work out best for the Magic and for Tracy.

DT (FLA): Hey Otis... can you tell me how the expansion draft works? Do players know they are on the list? How many players do you leave unprotected?

Otis Smith: You can protect up to eight. Usually the players know, but in the '89 Draft, I didn't know. Charlotte can take up to one player from every team. From there, they then proceed to build their team.

Gary (Orlando): Did you have a feeling you would be taken in the expansion draft? Or did it come as a complete surprise to you?

Otis Smith: I didn't know I was on the list, so it was a surprise. I had low dollars and the location in Orlando was a factor and that's why I was on the list. It worked out all good, though. I'm glad it worked out the way it did.

Mat (chile): What factors will you consider making the list of "the protected ones"?

Otis Smith: You have to look at contracts, you have to look at what Charlotte may want. Then, you look at your team and see what players are most valuable to your team, to moving forward. Then you make some decisions.

Evan (Atlanta): Otis, did anyone that you worked out over the past month or so particularly stand out for you?

Otis Smith: The workouts are mostly for coaches to get a look. For the most part, we've seen most of the players. We didn't go in looking to be wow'ed, we just wanted to get an idea about what each player can bring to our team.

Mark (Lansing): Otis, you had the opportunity to play in the NBA for several years, what is your fondest memory from your playing days, and do you recall what you feel was your best game as a pro?

Otis Smith: Probably the fondest memory, is playing in the league and all the friends I made. I enjoyed every game I played. It's something I love to do, and I played with reckless abandon as hard as I could, whether I scored two points or ten points.

Matt (Toronto): What position would you see Emeka Okafor playing for your team (if the Magic do indeed draft him)? Why would he be most effective there?

Otis Smith: I think he will make a good pro, wherever he goes. He will eventually be a good power forward in this league. He is a winner, he knows what it takes to win, and I think he will be a successful player in this league, wherever he ends up.

Miami: How does it feel to be left unprotected by your team? Do you feel rejected or more like a business decision?

Otis Smith: It depends on where you are with your team. If you are sitting on the 11th or 12th spot on the bench, then moving onto a new team can be a great thing. My expansion year with the Magic is one of the best years I ever had. It was real exciting to be a part of a new team, in a new city to the league and I really enjoyed myself.

Iasi, Romania: Are the European players this year prepared for NBA? What about Orlando, any plans with European players?

Otis Smith: Yes, we have been scouting in Europe. The Europeans are just as prepared as the college or high school kids coming in. The Europeans are very grounded in the fundamentals of the game, and once they get adjusted to the advanced pace of the NBA game, they can add some good things to our league.

Garrett ( jacksonvile): What is the Magic number one priority seeing as u have so many young players?

Otis Smith: We need to improve our team. Not necessarily one position, but we need people who can get us better now, and down the road. With only 21 wins last year, we have some work to do and we want guys who can get the job done for us.

Chris (Nanuet NY): Who do you think will be a steal pick out of the lottery?

Otis Smith: That's hard to say. I'm not sure any of the projected guys in the first round would be a steal. A steal in this draft might be in the second round. Maybe Luke Jackson would be a guy who can step up and be a good player.

Peter (Chicago): Hey Otis, can you tell me what it was like in that '88 dunk contest going against MJ, Nique and spud?

Otis Smith: Ha-ha. That was a real exciting time for me....I finished fourth to guys like Jordan and Nique and Drexler. If you noticed, I was wearing my warm-up jersey, I was so nervous competing with those guys I forgot my uniform in the hotel!

mike(tampa): What do you remember most about your time here in Orlando? What did and didn't you like about it?

Otis Smith: The way the fans embraced us. We have great fans here. The support guys who come to work everyday and play hard. If you play hard, they really support you.

Otis Smith: Thanks to all the NBA fans, especially the Magic fans for chatting. I'd also like to thank the Magic for selecting me in their expansion draft and giving me the opportunity to help them grow as an NBA franchise, first as a player, and now as someone in their front office.
