Orlando Magic rookie James Augustine recently spent some time in the NBA Development League, playing for the Anaheim Arsenal. The second round selection, who wasn't seeing any minutes at the end of Orlando's bench, benefitted from the playing time - averaging 10.1 ppg., 8.9 rpg., 1.0 apg. and 1.00 stlpg. in 27.1 mpg in eight games with the Arsenal.
He led the Arsenal in scoring once and in rebounding five times. On January 17 @ Tulsa, Augustine tallied 14 points and a game-high 17 rebounds. He then recorded team-highs of 26 points and 10 rebounds on January 19 @ Colorado.
Now back with the Magic, the former Illinois standout is looking for his first shot at some NBA action. And on Thursday, February 1, James chatted live on OrlandoMagic.com. Check out what he had to say about being back with the Magic, his upcoming hairstyle and much more.
Tim (Orlando): Can you tell us about Draft night? Where you expecting to get drafted? What were your feelings about heading to Florida?
James Augustine: I was pretty sure I was gonna get drafted, but I had no idea where I'd be going. I was sitting there watching the draft and I didn't really have expectations, because i didn't want to be disappointed. Going to Florida was great, I have a cousin in Jacksonsville who I'm close to. And also to to get a chance to come to this franchise, with Grant Hill and Dwight Howard and Jameer Nelson and all the good players here, I knew it would be a great opportunity for me.
Josh (Secaucus, NJ): Hey, James, congrats from a fellow Illinois alum. Do you feel that you changed your game in Anaheim, or were you just getting warmed up to get involved with the Magic? Looking forward to seeing you in action soon.
James Augustine: I think for the most part I played my game in Anaheim. I worked on my game alot in Orlando, whether it was posting up or facing the basket. Then, when I got to Anaheim, I really got an opportunity to apply those skills and work on it and improve on those things during games.
Brandon (Titusville, FL): Is it rough going from sitting out every game in the NBA to play in the NBDL and then having to sit out again?
James Augustine: No. I knew the situation was going to be be like that. I knew I'd have to fight for minutes. This was going to be a development year for me, so I'm prepared for it. The hardest part, was getting back into perfect game shape. But going to the D-League, I knew I'd play alot, and I think it benefited me, but I'm really happy to be back in the NBA with Orlando and doing everything I can to be ready to contribute to victories on the court for the Magic.
Ken (orlando): Hey James talk about your recent experience in Anaheim and if its helped your confidence more this time around.
James Augustine: Yes, it did help my confidence. Sitting on the bench and not playing much, except for practice, can get you mentally down. Getting back on the court for Anaheim, getting good minutes, got my confidence back up and now I'm looking forward to contributing to wins for the team here in Orlando.
Jeff (Los Angeles): I'm a huge fan! After getting in some practice with Dwight Howard, what have you learned from him?
James Augustine: It's hard to learn from Dwight, he's so athletic and has such a big body, it's stuff you can't really teach. But, mentally, he shows you alot. The things he does, going around defenders and things like that, this helps me to see how he succeeds and attacks the game that way.
Crown Point: James.. I would like to start off my by saying you are my favorite basketball player ever and I wish you the best of luck in the future! I was wondering do you still keep in touch with your former Illinois teammates?
James Augustine: Yeah, I talk to some of the guys still there and a few of the guys who have graduated and move onto the NBA. It's tough, but we try to keep in touch, often through text messaging and computers. The coaches too, I try to keep in touch with everybody.
Angie, Illinois: I just have to be the total girl here - will we see you with a shaved head again?
James Augustine: Ha-ha (Laughing) I've been getting a little bit of a hard time from the guys, so I'm not sure I'll be going back to the straight razor, but I do think I will be getting it shaved soon.
Chris (IL): Yo, James... who do you think should be made an all-star reserve who didn't get voted in?
James Augustine: I actually haven't seen the list yet. Guys were looking at it today, so I haven't figured it out yet. Dwight is getting more publicity, but I still think he's underrated. Joe Johnson is another guy, who is under-rated on his team too. Guys like that.
Kenny (Orlando): You've been a couple places since playing pro ball. What's been you favorite city to visit, either in the NBA or D-League?
James Augustine: Being a rookie, going to all the cities has been good for me. I had never been to LA so that was fun. I look forward to getting into Chicago when that trip comes up. New York. It's great to go to all the cities.
Paul(orlando): hey james its good to see you back in a magic uni!!! what do you think that the team has to become more consistent and win games in the second half???
James Augustine: I think we can go all the way. Whenever you're on a team, you want to feel that way, but I believe that's the case with this team. We have a good balanced squad, but we need to try and avoid little slumps and bounce back from tough games, that will be our key to being successful.
James Augustine: I want to thank the fans and everyone who wrote in totday. I appreciate the interest and the support and I look forward to doing my best to help the Magic this season.
