We had our first practice of training camp – my first as a professional – and it was a good 3 ½ hours. I think the biggest difference from college to this is the speed of the game. Everyone is so fast. A lot of people told me about it (how fast the game at the pro level is), but I don’t think talking about it does it justice.
It was challenging, but I’m learning. I have a great group of guys around me. They are older and teaching me. Shawn Kemp pulled me aside three or four times and said “rook” do this or do that. Darrell (Armstrong) also. Those guys are easy to play off of because they tell you what to do.
It’s tough to separate people on this level. Everyone out there is good. Guys not on the first string or guys just trying to make the team are just as good as each other. We have 19 guys here and 19 guys are good. In college, you could say, well, so-and-so isn’t good. Here, everyone is good.
I think I was more nervous yesterday, than today, because I was anticipating my first training camp. It felt good to be in the jersey (for media day) yesterday, but this is a new experience.
One thing I know I have to do is try to get my rest (between two-a-day practices) and make sure my body is fresh because I play with energy. I can’t bring the energy if my body is sore, tired and beat up.
I think the thing that will stick out today is you can’t take a half of second off on this level because of the speed of the game. The game is so fast and you always have to be on your toes, moving and running.
