Road Trip Journal Entry 4

We're on our way to Indy, the final leg of our frigid, four-game trip.
Here are some snap shots from Detroit and beyond:
* There wasn't a dry eye in the Palace of Auburn Hills after Grant Hill was introduced. All homecomings should be that way. Every so often you get a special storyline during the regular season. Tonight was one of those nights, even though we dropped the decision. The ovation Grant received is a testment to his perseverance when he could have mailed it in, and his class.
* It was so darn cold. Even though I'm from Chicago, my blood has thinned after nearly 20 years in Florida. I can't believe I used to play outside every day in this type of weather. Taking a shower was even tough, especially since I got one of the rooms which should have gone to a player (the hotel said they constructed such rooms to attract teams, bigger beds, baths, etc...). Anyway, the shower head was so high up that by the time the water came down it was cold.
* Prior to the game in Detroit the ballboys were asking players if they wanted anything to eat either pre- or post-game. This is a common occurence. Anyway, this was Brandon Hunter's order: "A turkey sandwhich with extra turkey." It caught me as funny. Not extra mayo or extra cheese, but extra turkey. Maybe you had to be there.
* Spanish radio play-by-play star Joey Colon is an unsung hero on Magic road trips. Not because of his stellar play-by-play which rolls off the tongue, and his super-high energy (just try hitting your SAP button one day), but because he doubles as a flight attendant on every trip. He heats and re-heats. He serves. He cleans. This is especially helpful to the real flight attendants, especially on a 51-minute flight from Detroit to Indy. In next year's media guide we will list his title as Spanish Radio/Flight Attendant.
* TV producer Tye Eastham, he of the seven-course, three-server "Lobster Bake" in Boston (see entry one), just asked for the snack basket at 35,000 feet. What did he grab? A Fig Newton bar, with a Rice Krispie/Twizzler/Snickers chaser. (Timeout: He just layed down 'creme brulee' in Scrabble to win). He's now stuffing his face at 1 am. To be fair, Tye was quick to point out that the Twizzlers and candy bar are for tomorrow. Oh wait, it is tomorrow.
* Doug Christie is going to be great for us. He's a class act and it was cool to see him talking about our offense and defense with Grant Hill and Kelvin Cato during the game. On the flight he was catching up with Hedo Turkoglu. They were teammates in Sacramento.
Well, it's on to meet the Pacers and another shot at a .500 road trip. Then home and 72 degrees again. Going home hot would be nice.
