The Magic headed into the 2002 NBA Playoffs for the seventh time in nine years as the #5 seed in the Eastern Conference. The Magic finished the regular season with a 44-38 record. Orlando has finished with a .500 record or better in 10 straight seasons, tied for the fourth longest current streak in the NBA. The Magic advanced to the Eastern Conference Finals in 1995 and 1996 and also earned a trip to the 1995 NBA Finals where they became the second fastest team in league history to reach The Finals. Overall, the Magic are 22-27 all-time during post-season play.

    Hornets' Magloire Suspended and Fined
    Charlotte Hornets center Jamaal Magloire has been suspended for one game without pay and fined $7,500 for his flagrant foul-penalty (2) against Orlando Magic forward Tracy McGrady. The incident occurred with 5:30 remaining in the fourth period of the Hornets' 102-85 victory over the Magic in Game 4 of their Eastern Conference first round series on April 30. Magloire will miss Game 1 of the Hornets' second round series against either the New Jersey Nets or Indiana Pacers.

    Charlotte Wins Series 3-1
    Baron Davis recorded a triple-double for the second straight contest, tallying 28 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists, as Charlotte defeated Orlando, 102-85, in Game #4 at the TD Waterhouse Centre. The Hornets won the First Round series, 3-1. It was the fourth time in five seasons that the Magic have failed to advance past the First Round of the playoffs. Jamaal Magloire netted 19 points for the Hornets and David Wesley added 18. Tracy McGrady led all scorers with 35 points, while Patrick Ewing notched 11 points and a team-high 10 rebounds. The Magic shot just 38.8 percent from the field, including 4-of-21 (19.0) from beyond the three-point arc. After a close first quarter, Charlotte outscored Orlando in the second quarter, 26-17, and took a 51-41 halftime lead. The Magic cut the deficit to 75-69 heading into the fourth quarter. However, the Hornets opened the final stanza with a 10-2 run and never looked back.

    First Round, Game #3: Apr. 27 @ Orlando
    Hornets 110, Magic 100 (OT)

    Baron Davis recorded the first triple-double in Hornets’ playoff history, tallying 33 points, 14 rebounds and 10 assists, as Charlotte defeated Orlando in overtime, 110-100, at TD Waterhouse Centre. Charlotte took a 2-1 series lead in the best-of-five set. Six Hornets scored in double figures on the afternoon. Jamaal Magloire had 15 points and 10 rebounds, while P.J. Brown netted 17 points. Tracy McGrady paced the Magic with a game-high 37 points. Darrell Armstrong tied playoff career-highs with 21 points and eight assists. Orlando jumped out of the gates quickly, grabbing a 23-10 lead during the opening minutes. Charlotte responded with a 30-4 run and led 50-45 at halftime. The Magic outscored the Hornets, 24-16, in the third quarter and led 69-66. In the fourth quarter, McGrady tied the game at 92-92 after hitting a three-pointer with 1:13 left. After an Orlando miss, Charlotte got the ball back with 0.7 seconds remaining. Davis’ heave at the buzzer appeared to win the game for the Hornets, but the basket was waived off and the game was sent into overtime for the second straight contest. In the extra session, Davis had nine points and Charlotte outscored Orlando, 18-8.

    First Round, Game #2: Apr. 23 @ Charlotte
    Magic 111, Hornets 103 (OT)

    Despite playing with a lower back strain, Tracy McGrady led the Magic with 31 points, 11 rebounds, seven assists, three blocked shots and two steals, as Orlando defeated Charlotte, 111-103 in overtime at Charlotte Coliseum. The win evened the best-of-five series, 1-1. The Magic also recorded their first playoff win on the road since May 12, 1996 (103-96 @ Atlanta), a span of 11 games. Troy Hudson went 10-of-18 from the field and scored 26 points off the bench for Orlando, while Pat Garrity added 18 points and eight boards. Elden Campbell led the Hornets with 27 points, 13 rebounds and three blocks. Charlotte was without Jamal Mashburn, who sat out due to a virus. The Magic used a 35-21 second quarter to grab a 62-47 halftime lead. Charlotte came all the way back and tied the score at 99-99 after a shot by Campbell with 4.4 seconds left in regulation. McGrady’s shot as time expired was off the mark and the game was sent into overtime. In the extra session, Orlando outscored Charlotte, 12-4. The four points by the Hornets tied the NBA playoff record for fewest points scored in an overtime period. They were 1-of-12 in overtime. Hudson had six points in overtime, while Garrity added four.

    First Round, Game #1: Apr. 20 @ Charlotte
    Hornets 80, Magic 79

    The Hornets went on a 17-2 run late in the fourth quarter, and Baron Davis sealed the game with a last-second steal, as Charlotte edged Orlando, 80-79, in Game #1 of the best-of-five First Round playoff series at Charlotte Coliseum. Davis led all scorers with 28 points, while tallying seven assists, seven rebounds and three steals, and P.J. Brown recorded 14 points and a game-high 15 rebounds. Charlotte won despite shooting 34.9 percent from the floor. They outrebounded Orlando, 51-32, including 20-3 on the offensive glass. Tracy McGrady, slowed by a lower back strain all evening, led the way for the Magic with 20 points. The Magic led by as many as 13 points in the second half and had a 74-64 lead with 8:00 remaining in the game. The Hornets took a 76-75 lead after a turnaround jumper by George Lynch with 4:17 left. Trailing 80-78, McGrady missed one of two free throws to trim the lead to one point. Darrell Armstrong stole the ball with 6.7 seconds left, giving Orlando the last possession. As McGrady drove past Lynch with time winding down, Davis came around McGrady’s right side and stole the ball, giving the Hornets a 1-0 series lead.
