OTIS RESPONDS TO YOUR QUESTIONS & COMMENTS
From Mike (12/12): Hi Otis, Mike from New Smyrna Beach. Saw you at the Atlanta game last night. It's a long drive home after a tough loss like that, but I wanted to congratulate you on this year's transactions. Everyone talks about Rashard, but I think the best move might have been at coach. After the debacle with Donavan, quickly getting Van Gundy was brilliant. With a very similar lineup (Lewis in, Battie out) the team is playing a much improved style of ball. I have a question: How is it decided each night which end of the court the home team starts at? Being in 119, I like to see the Magic finish the game down there. Thanks, Mike.
Otis: Mike, it's the visiting team call on where they want to have the ball first. For the most part, visitors like to have their defense in front of their bench in the second half, but its not our call at home.
From Sean (12/06): Otis - I want to thank you for making bold moves in the off season and doing what is right for the team. I have just one question, you still strike me as a competitive person and I was wondering if you wish you could don the Magic Uniform again and score a quick 10 points? If you could, who would you like to play against?
Otis: Sean, I'm old, very old and my body is older than I am! So my days of playing basketball are O-V-E-R! But yes, I am very competitive. And every night we play, I play. I stand in that corner and feel like I'm in the game. I play every game, every night.
But don't kid yourself...these guys today are bigger, faster and stronger than I ever was, so I'll just stay out of their way.
From Chris (12/05): Otis, With a quarter of the season in the books could the fans get an honest to goodness opinion on our team (the Magic), where they stand, What you would like to see further develop, and what this team will need in the future to win a championship. Thanks.
Otis: Chris, I like that...great question. The answer is very simple. We need to continue to grow, develop and learn how to play the game the right way. We have a lot of good players that are still learning how to play. And Stan is doing a very good job teaching our players how to play the right way.
And for us, we are continuing to build a team that can play in June - not just November through April.
From Eric (10/10): Hi Otis, I really like our team this year! Great job putting it together! Do you feel that this group will compete for a finals championship this year or in the next couple, or do you feel you still need to add a player or too to get over the hump.
Otis: Eric, I really do like our team. Like most teams, the key for us is injuries. If we can stay away from the injury bug we have a chance. I really like the way our guys are responding to Stan's coaching style and the system. Keep watching Magic basketball.
From Matthew (10/8): Hi Otis, I was wondering what you were planning on doing about losing Tony Battie? It has such a large affect if you want to use Rashard Lewis at small forward and occasionally play him at the 4 position to increase the tempo. I was wondering if you were considering getting another big man? Tony Battie is a veteran, and who knows how much longer he'll play and Foyle is not a permanent solution. Would you consider trying to trade with Atlanta for one of their young power forwards. With a first round draft pick you probably wouldn't have to give up to much more. And with the Magic on the edge of a breakout season the pick shouldn't end up in the lottery, and a guy like Shelden Williams would really shore up the front court.
Otis: Matthew, Thanks for taking the time to write me. Yes, I know it's been a long time since you guys have heard from me. But you also know the summer was VERY busy for me. I do miss you guys. And all the options you come with for trades, etc.!
Well, for the record, you don't replace Tony and the things he brings to your team. You just can't. What Tony does for your team doesn't always show up in the box score. He is smart and he organizes your team from inside and out. So a knee jerk reaction is not what we need in this situation.
Maybe help comes from within. Maybe you play smaller at times, maybe you play even bigger at times. The point is let's see first before running out and signing another player.
Hey guys...I'm back! Start sending those emails.
Otis
From Soul Bro (6/17): Otis, Great hire in SVG. Why not make a play for a proven, all-star power forward (e.g. Pau Gasol, Shawn Marion) in a sign and trade built around Darko instead of signing Darko and hoping he develops?
Otis: Soul Bro, Hey, if I have to use my full name you should at the very least use your first name. I'm sure your parents didn't name you Soul Bro!
As for trying to get our team better, we will do whatever it takes as long as it makes basketball and financial sense. Keep sending in your ideas.
From Chris (6/7): I don't know about you Otis, but I'm sleeping better at night with SVG being our Head Coach. Your honest thoughts on the new hire?
Otis: Chris, Without question. We won't have to worry about the NBA learning curve with Coach Van Gundy. But I'm also happy for the other guy. He is where he wants to be.
From Marc (6/2): Otis, Are the Magic considering trade possibilities to acquire Kobe Bryant since his recent demand to be traded? Do the Magic think it is worth while to investigate the possibility?
Otis: Marc, Don't believe the hype..."
From Bruce (5/29): Otis, Since we need another "big" inside, will we see Marcin Gortat this upcoming season?
Otis: Bruce, Thanks for your interest in the Orlando Magic. Gortat will be here in Orlando playing on our Summer League team and we'll have to see how his development is coming along.
From Michael (5/24): Are the Magic looking to trade into the lottery this year? It seems a lot of teams outside of Portalnd and Seattle are looking to trade and there are a lot of players getting overlooked because of the recognition of Oden and Durant which the Magic can capitalize on.
Otis: Michael, It is something we'll have to consider, especially if there's a player up there that we really like. With that said, we would target guys as the Draft unfolds. But it would have to be the right guy - a real difference maker. Keep in mind that trading into the first round would eat into cap space. That would affect what we could do in free agency. So it would have to be the right guy. But we will continue to look at everything to get our team better. Thanks for your question.
From Hummels (5/22): Otis, I heard the Magic could possibly trade for Amare Stodimare. Is this true?
Otis: Hummels, For whom? Where do we get these things? Thanks for the support.
From Tony (4/24): Otis, do you feel our bench players are strong enough to contend for a championship?
Otis: Tony, I feel like we have to get better in all areas of the game to compete for a title. I do think the series with the Pistons is good for this young team. We have to learn how to play at a high level for 82 games.
From Brian (4/22): Hi Otis, This summer, how difficult is it going to be to re-sign Darko and add another top free agent? Thank you so much, and keep up the great work!
Otis: Brian, It's more tricky than it is difficult. But we will get it done and put a product on the floor that the city can be proud of. Go Magic!
From Kelvin (4/22): Otis, Hi Sir.. Congrat for making into the playoff. i am a big Magic fan from Malaysia. As a Magic fan, should I be expecting a big move around the league this summer?? i think Magic do need a go-to guy and some one that can hit 3's to spread the defense out so that Howard can hav more space for his post-play! with this, magic can really be a championship competing team! lewis and carter would be suitable but are they too old to fit in magic squad?? wat other free agents are in your mind now??
Otis: Kelvin, I would love to talk to you about free agency, but I really can't. All I can say is we will be a better team next year. We will do whatever it takes to put a team on the floor that will compete for a championship. Always keep things moving in a positive direction. Go Magic!
From Kevin (2/19): Hey Otis, with all the rumors of Scottie Pippen coming back, is there any possiblity we could sign him here??? I think he'd fit perfectly right now in the absence of Trevor Ariza, and the occasional absence of Grant Hill. Even if we only sign him to a 10-day or what have you, he said he'd be contempt with that. Your Thoughts?
Otis: Kevin, Maybe he will bring Jordan with him! Come on people! Stop believing all the hype. Your are smarter than that!
From Matt (2/19): Dwight Howard was robbed in the dunk competition. It was obvious when the judges gave gerald green a perfect score for dunking over a table that they wanted him to win. They must have felt bad for the celtics, since it seems that they cant win at anything else. Just because diwghts sticker didnt stick with the judges doesnt mean that it didnt stick with the rest of the world. Make sure he knows that he is the champ in my book!
Otis: Matt, very well said...
From Fendi (2/17): Hey sir! As a Magic fan, should I be expecting a big move around the league and especially from you as the deadline approaches? You've done a great job with the past transactions within your span as a GM of this team. Keep up the good work. Also, are Dwight, Jameer, Ariza and Darko this team's core players?
Otis: Fendi, I believe there will be a few trades as there always are around the time leading up to the deadline. As for what we are going to do, in all likelihood, not much. However, we will look at everything. We made major changes at the deadline last year and now we just have to have patience and let things grow. We are very encouraged by some of the things we are seeing from our young team. Making a major change at this point will move us backwards. We liked our team at the start of the season and we still like our team. The goal is to win a championship and we believe we are on the right path. Go Magic!
From Andrew (1/31): Otis, I realize that this is an ask Otis forum but I am not writing to ask anything. I have something positive to share with you. I am writing to give you a report on Dwight Howard.
We met Dwight last night at a church in Orange city. He came to share his testimony with us and field our questions. Man, where do I start? Dwight was terrific. He was open, honest and so humble. At one point a little 3 year old girl shouted, "I love you" to Dwight. You know what he did? He stopped and asked, "Who said that to me". When she stood up for him to see her, he returned the love to her. That was so special. He was always alert and looked every one with questions in the eye. He interacted with everyone and even did an amazing impression from the Lion King and of Shaq. That was hilarious.
You guys did Orlando and the Magic justice by drafting him. I had the privilege of thanking him for being the good example that our children deserve to have. He thanked me as I was thanking him. I have met many Magic players over the years but none were as kind and humble as him. You should be proud of your decision to take him 1st in the draft and I personally want to thank you for giving my children a hometown "Hero" that is worthy of that title.
Thanks Otis!
Otis: Andrew, He is an amazing young man. Thanks for sharing.
From Tony (1/24): Mr Smith, Last night I was struck by the stark contrast in the pre-game preparation of the Dallas and Orlando teams. Dallas came out right at about 20 minutes before the game but Orlando didn't appear until almost two minutes later. Turkoglu showed up after the lay-up line was over. Howard then went to half court to the ball rack and proceeded to launch half court shots as his way of distributing the balls to his teammates. Hedo grabbed one ball and as if in a trance dribbled to half court slowly then weaved toward the basket putting up a funky layup grabbed the rebound and dribbled around again for another layup - and again - and again! In the whole warm-up if Turk took three regular shots to get ready for the game it was a lot!
Meanwhile a glance down to the other end revealed a Dallas team that was all business!
During the four minute lay-up line just before game time very few players took regular lay-ups or shots that would be ones that would be used in the game. At one point I counted twelve straight missed shots on the lay-up line! Why? Players floated through the air spinning wild shots that had no chance of going in. It looked like a bunch of guys out for a little Sunday fun on the court.
Meanwhile another glance to the other end - surprise! Dallas is all business.
It seems that very few Orlando players view pre-game warm-up as preparation for the game. Some of the vets, Tony, Grant, Jameer and a few others work on game type shots. Howard spends a lot of time at the foul line but why aren't Darko and Dwight helping each other in the low post - taking a few hook shots with each hand while the other provides a little opposition? Darko threw up a few 18 footers but mostly stood around.
I wonder which team raced out to a 16 point first quarter lead??
Players want to be treated as professionals. They probably don't want you and the coaches scrutinizing pre-game to evaluate effort and attitude. If they want to be treated well they must learn to respect the game and be constantly aware that each has been given a privilege to play a child's game for incredible amounts of money! I don't begrudge them the money. I am happy for them but in return I expect honest effort each time they step on to the court. In my mind players that are serious about winning use pre-game to get ready to play well! We do have some veterans on the team even though overall the team is incredibly young. Those vets do seem to respect the game but sometimes they must provide some vocal leadership when younger players seem to have lost their way.
Otis, I like this team. The patience you and the coaches are showing as the team develops is in my mind the way to build a consistent winner. Sometimes however the leadership group , management, coaches, and veterans must put their foot down and say an end to the foolishness and demand that the young players give the game the respect it is due!
Otis: Tony, Thanks for you. I agree with you 100 percent...and I could not have said it better myself.
From Chap (12/31): Otis, I would like to talk about Trevor Ariza and what he has brought to the Magic. He's a finisher, slasher, one that makes the most of his opportunity when he's in the game. Did you know that he was this good, and you think he can become an option 1 or 2 player in years to come because of his ability to attack the basket?
Otis: Chap, Let's talk Trevor Ariza...energy, effort, hard play, team guy. Trevor is a very young basketball player that should be talked about in the same breathe with our young core of Dwight, Jameer and Darko. He will be a very good basketball player if he continues to improve his game. His outside shooting has gotten much better over last season, but what he really has is very good basketball instincts. I don't know where the ceiling for Trevor will be, but it's still going up at this point.
Trevor was a BIG part of the Francis deal, not just a throw in as reported. Thanks for your interest.
Kevin (12/17): Otis, I really appreciate the fantastic job you've done in arranging this fantastic team that Orlando has this year, but I do have one question, When do you think we could see James Augustine?? With all the injuries on the team, he has actually been available for action. Do you think the only way he will play is if the game is a blowout? Or will he actually get some playing time this week?? Thanks, and Go Magic!!!
Otis: Kevin, It's a good and a bad thing that James got drafted by the Orlando Magic. He gets to watch some very good players at his position play and he can learn the game. We love what James brings to our team, however, we can't play them all. We tell the players all the time that they have a role with this team and they all do. Some of their roles include wat they bring to the court everyday - energy and effort. We have players on this team that play very limited minutes, and that's their role for this team. Their roles can change at the drop of a hat and they just have to be ready. I don't know when James will get on the floor, but he will. And he'll have to be ready...
From Matthew: (12/13): Otis, I'm a big Magic fan and have been very happy with the way you've changed the direction of the organization. Having said that I'd like to know why the Magic shouldn't go after Iverson? I can think of the standard responses but I'd like to hear it straight from you.
Otis: Matt, Even with our play of late, I still like the direction of our team. To add a player such as Allen Iverson changes up that direction. Trust me, we have the right mix of guys in our locker room. Thanks for your support.
From Kevin (12/13): Otis, I have been a HUGE magic fan through the good and bad times. I have not missed a Magic game this year, either at the game or on TV and I was wondering about Darko. He has his occasional spark, but most of the time he just seems to be lacking the energy and excitement that you need to produce consistently in the NBA. I feel if we could get 100% hustle from Darko, that we would be really hard to beat with Dwight alongside him. What are your thoughts?
Otis: Kevin, Enough said...I agree.
From Chap (12/8): Otis, what goes into scouting for the Magic when they're on the road. Also when do you start scouting for the draft?
Otis: Chap, I don't really understand your question in regards to scouting for the Magic when we are on the road. As for scouting for the Draft, that never stops. It's a year round process in which Dave Twardzik oversees six other members of our scouting department. I also take in games during the season on non-Magic game days. Thanks for your support.
From David (11/27): Otis, I'm not coach or nba expert but I don't think Darko is a post player. I think we should be running pick and roll with him and have Dwight to worry about post play. Darko can hit the jumper, but he struggles with the hook. What do you think?
Otis: David, Thanks for paying attention to Orlando Magic basketball. Darko is one of those special players that have the ability to play both inside and outside, depending on the line up on the floor. He is a very skilled 7-footer, but he is still learning how to play the game at a high level night in and night out. Darko is a long way from being a finished product...
From Seth (11/19): Dear GM Smith, In the last Magic vistory over the Bobcats, Dwight Howard passed you in made field goals as a Magician. Any comments?
Otis: Seth, Let's hope Dwight passes a few more people on that list. I figured he would pass me in his rookie season! Go Magic!
Adam (11/16): Please, Please, Please fill in Magic fans on the "JJ situation". We buy Magic tickets, buy your clothes, supported your draft pick of JJ, WE HAVE A RIGHT TO KNOW THE "JJ SITUATION". Why is he not playing? Is he hurt? Is he not performing up to NBA caliber right now? Thanks and go Magic!!
Otis: Adam, I really love your passion for Orlando Magic basketball. J.J. Redick is going to be a very good pro. There's nothing wrong with him - his back is fine, his foot is fine.
He started his pro career after missing four months of basketball, so he is having to play a bit of catch up. J.J. was also drafted by the Orlando Magic and we will make sure he has the best chance for success.
I guess we were a lottery team that now has the luxury of having some very good players that also play the same position as J.J. As we are telling J.J. right now, his career is going to be a marathon and not a sprint. We will get him on the floor very soon.
Adam, I hope this helps answer your question. Go Magic!
From Mike (11/01): Go get James White! You won't be sorry! He was let go from the Pacers yesterday! He's a high flying, aggressive player with an attitude that will put butt's in your seats. In two years he will be a top player!
Otis: Mike, As always, I love our fans and thanks for trying to help. But we love the 15 players we have under contract at this time. Thanks again and keep all those ideas coming. Go Magic!
From Tom (10/24): Hi Otis, nice job on assembling what looks like a deep team this year. I do have a question for you: Why is it that Darko seems to be relegated to the bench to start games? Even Battie seems to have suggested that with the all-world potential Howard and Milicic could have together, Darko should be starting. It seems to me that our best chance at having a breakout season as a team is Darko having a breakout season as a player. The trade for him and Arroyo is part of the reason fans have so much optimism for this season, and it would seem to favor us to start Darko. If we need more defense on the 1st team /offense on the 2nd, we could start him and Bogans and have Hill be the 6th man of the year. Just a thought. Thanks for taking time out of your day, and for giving Magic fans hope.
Otis: Tom, Thank you very much for your interest and concern with the Orlando Magic. How many things in your life have just been given to you? You are a nice guy...you deserve to have what everyone else in life has, I think we should just hand it over to you.
It's funny that sports is one of a few places that we expect things to be given, not earned. Darko is a very talented young basketball player and will have an impact on this team in the near future. However, if he is going to start and our team is going to have success, Darko will have to earn his starting job just like every other player. We are fortunate enough to have Tony Battie on our team to be able to play whatever role we need him to play.
To answer your question about defense with the first unit, it's not a one person issue...it's a team issue. We have to do a better job with team defense and we are getting better...mostly because of Tony.
Tom, thanks for being an informed fan.
From Marina (10/18): Hello Otis! In the 1988 Dunk Contest you missed a dunk. Why didn't you replace it?
Otis: Marina, That is just funny! Is this a test to see if this is really me? Well, it is! But to answer your question...the rules were different back then. I replaced all the dunks I could replace during the competition.
It was a fun time and a very good contest. Jordan, Nique, Clyde...and me! Crazy!
Happy New Year Magic Fans!
From Francisco (10/2): Mr. Smith, First I want to congratulate you as the new general manager. However, I feel a great disappointment in certain comment you made on a few T.V. interviews. Carlos is only 27 years old--not 30 like you stated. He made a great impact not only with the team but also with the Hispanic community. Apparently he is not your favorite and I don't understand why as he is very talented. You also commented that Carlos could be traded at any time. I do understand this is a business but when you have a true point guard that brings revenue to the organization and plays his heart out, it makes me wonder if you dislike Hispanics. Just remember, there is a large Hispanic community here in central Florida with a lot of power.
I hope that in the future that you treat Carlos with little more respect like he deserves.
Otis: Francisco, you have got to be kidding me. I think as much of Carlos as any other player on this team. Just relax! Understand this...I want to win - period. We traded for Carlos because we think he can help us win basketball games. As for the age of Carlos, it was my mistake. See you at the games!
From Jeremy (9/21): Hey Otis, ESPN's Chris Sheridan wrote that Carlos Arroyo would be the next breakout player in the NBA, citing his strong performance at the World Championship and his unique playmaking ability. He also writes, "if the Magic can find a way to utilize him in tandem with Jameer Nelson, he'll [Arroyo] have a huge breakout season." What's your take on this? Any idea who's going to be starting at point this season?
Otis: I'm so happy we are all reading Chris Sheridan's stuff. He must really know his basketball. Why read any of those other guys? (Just kidding) We are expecting very big things from Carlos, but if you are asking me to tell you who will start, that will be decided on the court in about a week. I love this time of year...it all happens on the court. Thanks for being a fan.
From Matthew (9/18): What are you going to do about the Magic's perimeter defense? With both JJ Reddik and Hedo Turkolu at 2 and 3, don't you think that opens a serious gap in the defense? Wouldn't it make sense to trade Hedo Turkolu and some other insentives for a guy more defensive minded, like a Rashard Lewis type. Hedo Turkolu already takes more shots a game then Dwight Howard, and I think with all the offensive fire power it would be beneficial in getting Dwight more shots.
Otis: Matthew, Thanks for your interest in Orlando Magic basketball. You sound like you have a pretty good basketball IQ. With that said, I know you know that basketball is a team game on both sides of the ball and coaches help coach players on their strengths and weaknesses.
Turk and J.J. are not the worst defenders I have seen on this team or in this league. They will work well with our defensive plans for the future. They both bring something to the table to help you win a championship. To Win a championship on any level in any sport, you have to have players to fit a role and understand the importance of the role to help his or her team win.
If you've noticed, the teams that win it all are not the teams that have the perfect player at every position. It's the team that figures out the definition of the world 'team' and have players that decide to play the role. Even that last man on a championship team has a role that's very important to the winning of that championship.
What I found most interesting about your comment is the player you selected to compare them to. How is his defense?
I always enjoy getting fan emails, so don't stop writing!
From Edwin (9/15): Hi Otis, God bless...What is your response to this statement made by ESPN's Mark Stein "One warning, though: Orlando is going to seriously regret not signing Milicic to an extension this summer. The way he's progressing, Darko's price is bound to keep rising"?
Otis: He might be right...and I hope so. It's a good problem to have... Thanks for the interest.
From Scott (8/30): Otis, you made the comment that Jameer has had the best summer. Could you elaborate?
Otis: Scott, Jameer is in the best shape of his life. He's worked on his game and he has shown his leadership by inviting his teammates to Philly for a seven-day mini-camp for team building and basketball. That's big stuff. Here's a question for you: are leaders born or are they made? He has leadership in him and it is coming out by the day. Thanks for caring.
From George (9/9): Otis, I was wondering if Orlando would be intrested in giving Shawn Kemp a try out this summer i think we could use an extra big man and he did ok in his days here in Orlando i think he could help the Magic.. Thanks good job!
Otis: George, Ha Ha! I hope that was a joke. If not, sorry! Thanks for the interest.
From Dunstan (9/8): Hey Otis, to me honest with you I was no longer a Magic fan since Penny gone. However, last season I saw magic made some deals that really impressed me. (excepted for waived Penny, I knew it's all about business, but I'm his fan) Anyway, I would like to ask some questions about Darko Milicic. As we could see from last season, He played tough on the court, he blocked shot, he slam dunk and not afraid any dirty works. But I think his body still too weak, do you have any thoughts can do with it? cuz I'm pretty sure that in 3 years time (if there's no injury or trade), he and Howard will become the best towers. Just tell me how does your plan about training Darko, please.
Otis: Dunstan, I too was a big Penny Hardaway fan when he played for the Magic. He had some of his best years here. But stay with us, good times are coming back soon. As for Darko, he has been working on his body, but keep in mind that he is still young and is growing into his body. As time goes on, you will start to notice his growth and development. Thanks for caring.
From Sharon (9/2): Otis, Stacey Augmon is apparently a free agent. Anything on whether he will be back with the team? By the way, thanks for resigning Bo!!!!
Otis: Sharon, One of the Magic's biggest fans, thanks for reading. I know you would like to keep all the players from last year, but that's not possible so Stacey will not be back with the team. As far as Bo, we need the energy and effort that he brings everyday. He didn't play a lot of minutes for us, but what he gave our big guys in practice is very hard to come by. He sees the bigger picture. It's all about winning. Thanks for your support through the years.
From Jack: (8/22): Does the Magic have a scout at the FIBA World Championships? Do you get game films so you can see how Dwight, Darko, and Carlos are playing?
Otis: Jack, Yes we have international scouts as well as (Assistant GM) Dave Twardzik to watch the games. We are excited about the three players in the world games and are expecting big things from all of them. Thanks for your email.
From Joe (8/22): Hey Otis, great job on putting the our team together for a playoff run! Have you seen the World Championship lately? What do you think about Arroyo and Howard games on it? If they keep playing like that, I see playoff this season! GO MAGIC!!!!!
Otis: Joe, We have three players in the World Games - Dwight, Darko and Carlos - and they are all having very good summers. I can't wait until the season starts! We are keeping this on the down low, but Jameer may be having the best summer of all. Thanks.
From Eddie (8/22): Hey Otis, i like the work you have done with the team, i was wonderin, espn.com says that keyon dooling is on the trading block, is this true and who are we looking at trading for, please get back to me, thanx otis, Eddie, GO MAGIC!!!!!!!!!!!!
Otis: : Eddie, While I like the work that ESPN does most of the time, sometimes they are way off. If you look at our roster, you can see that we are heavy at the guards - so they make guesses sometimes. However, I like our team and the depth we have in those positions.
At this point in the game, I have no one that's on the "trading block" - your words, not mine. Thanks for the interest.
From Rishaun (8/17): Hey Otis. I know that someone earlier this summer asked about going back to our throwback jerseys full time instead of just for Hardwood Classic Nights. Are there any plans for an alternate jersey (maybe black) for the current Magic uniforms? I think it would be a hit. Thanks and go Magic!
Otis: Rishaun, This is much to do about nothing. I'm not much into fashion. I care more about how our team performs on the floor - not what they are wearing. However, I will pass this on to our marketing folks who do care about wardrobe. Thanks for your email.
From Steve (8/16): Great news about Bo O.!! I’m somewhat confused about the status of Tony Battie. On March 22nd, 2006, you said he had signed a contract extension, but this website lists him as a free agent??? Without revealing terms and other private matters, do the Magic have Battie for next season barring the unforeseen??? Also, I haven’t heard much about Grant Hill’s progress at rehabilitation. Will he be able to start the season or is he still having issues???
Otis: Tony is not a free agent...we did extend him during the season last year. Grant's rehab is going well. We are expecting him to have a very good and full season. I can't wait for training camp. It's going to be fun. Thanks!
From Polly (8/14): Mr. Smith, I live in south Florida, but as an alum of Illinois, I was thrilled to see the Magic select James Augustine in the second round. How do you foresee James fitting into the Magic plans? And what are the chances of me becoming a Magic fan as
a result? Thanks!
Otis: Polly, I think every team needs a James - someone that doesn't mind doing the dirty work by defending, rebounding and making hustle plays to help the team win. James will have to do all these things and then some to get on the floor, but the opportunity is there if he wants it.
I'm so excited about training camp. It's going to be a dog fight for playing time and the good teams have that everyday. When it's time to battle other teams, they pull for one another. We are so very close to having something special here. Hold onto your seats, it's going to be a good season. Thanks for the support.
From David (8/10): Hi Otis, Thanks in large part to your decision-making, this season’s Magic squad is the most promising we’ve had in a decade. Excellent work, Otis. Here’s my question: What kind of style of play do you think the Magic should have this season? I think that our greatest strength is the open-court game. Howard is a terrific finisher, and adding Redick should help spread the floor. We may need to become a better half-court team in a few years, but for now, I think we should let the team run. Thoughts?
Otis: David, In my mind, good teams find a way to get easy baskets - be it running the ball or set plays. I think this team will have the ability to do so many things because we are deep in every position and we have a team that can play different positions. Sometimes we will run and at times we will slow the ball down.
But you know when it comes to the playoffs everythings slows down and the good teams better be able to score in the half court. It should be a very fun season...I can't wait!
From Cameron (8/8): Question about next year’s salary cap room. I’ve read that the Magic could have $12-$15 million in cap space next summer because both Grant Hill and Darko Milic will be free agents. If Darko has a break-out year, he’s going to command top dollar. And if Grant stays healthy, he won’t be cheap either. So basically if the Magic want to lure a top free agent like Vince Carter or Rashard Lewis to Orlando, it means we’d have to let Darko and Grant walk away? Or can we sign the new guy with the cap room, and then come back and go over the cap to re-sign our current players? I hate the idea that we’d have to use all of our cap space just to re-sign our current guys and stay where we are. I’m really looking forward to adding that missing piece next year.
Otis: Cameron, In a word - "FLEXIBILITY". Stay tuned!
From Edwin (8/3): Hi Otis, I was wondering...will Darko be a starter this coming season??
Otis: Edwin, For this reason, training camp is going to be fun. He will have to come in and earn it - the other players are not going to lay down for him. At this point...we have no starters. I love training camp...I did as a player and I do as the GM.
From Billy (7/28): How about more information on Marcin Gortat? Is he coming back for camp or staying overseas?
Otis: Bill, Thanks for asking about Marcin. While we liked the progress he made over this past season, we think it's in everyones best interest for Marcin to play at least another season in Europe. We feel it's in his best interest to play and he will get more time on the court in Europre. Thanks again for your interest.
From Sharon (7/27): Otis, Thanks for the great job you and your staff are doing! I haven't heard anything about Bo Outlaw. Will he be back with us next season?
Otis: Hi Sharon. We are Bo fans too! Somethings just take a little more time. Thanks.
From Antwaun (7/25): Hello Otis, I serve in the Navy and I'm from Los Angeles. I have been a dedicated Magic fan since the Shaq and Penny days. Even when the home town Lakers won a title three times I still didn't abandon ship. I know that championships aren't won over night, But my question is how far away are we from contending?
Otis: Antwaun, First, thanks for staying with us through our lean years. I do believe happy days will soon be here again. How long will it take for the Magic to make a run at the title? It has already started. We have to continue adding good players to the team...and our young team continues to learn how to win. Stay with us as we continue to grow! Go Magic!
From Cedric (7/26): Hi Otis, I know that we just signed Bogans but i heard that Golden State might be interested in Ariza and would be willing to trade Mickael Pietrus for him. If Ariza ask for more money than you'd like to pay, would you think about doing that trade? I like Ariza a lot but i'd love to have Pietrus in Otown. Go Magic!
Otis: Cedric, While I'm a big fan of Pietrus, there's nothing to what you are hearing. We are very, very close to resigning Trevor. I haven't said this in a while, but stay off the net. Go Magic!
From JT (7/24): Have the Magic looked into free agent Scot Pollard as a possible addition to the team? I've read the team would like to add a frontcourt banger, and I think he fits the bill. He plays both 4 and 5, and brings a lot of energy off the bench. He also seems to be a team-first kind of player. Besides, every championship team always has that one guy who marches to the beat of a different drummer...
Otis: JT, While we like Scot and a lot of the things he would bring to the table for the Magic, we don't have any room on our team to add another body. We made lots of changes during the season last year. Thanks for your email.
From Darryl (7/24): Otis, are the magic thinking about trying sign Bonzi Wells, he could really help.
Otis: I have gotten emails similar to this one in the past. While I think Bonzi Wells is an outstanding talent, I don't think he fits into the direction this team would like to go at this time. Right now, our direction is to build around a young Dwight Howard, Jameer Nelson, Darko Milicic and Hedo Turkoglu. The kind of player we want to add to our team is very important. We all have to relax and let things develop. I promise we will continue to grow toward a championship! Thanks.
From Paul (7/24): Hi Otis, A magic fan from day one here. Things are looking bright down in 'Orlando for this season. I m not 100 percent on this but I thought when u traded francis last year in that deal if freed up alot of cap room for the team for a big run at some big names in the free agent market. I was hoping for a big name superstar to come in from free agency in the offseason. we are like one players away from being an elite team. Can we look for any action soon or did time run out?
Otis: Paul, thanks for your interest in Magic basketball. The cap room you are referring to is for the Summer of 2007. But more than the ability to sign free agents in 2007, it also gives us flexibility to continue to build our team the right way. Go Magic!
From George (7/21): otis, why wasn't Orlando intrested in Charlie Villanueva when he was on the shopping block? We could have given up something better than Tj Ford for him easily. The Bucks got a steal.
Otis: George, thanks for the interest. In the past when I get asked a question like this I would try to dance around the answer, but I won't on this one. The reason we did not offer up one of our young core players for him is really simple...we had no interest in him as a player for the Magic.
Just because a player is being shopped or traded doesn't mean that he would fit the direction we are trying to go. Charlie is a very nice young player, but who would we move for him today? And where would he play? Time and timing. By the way, I think that deal was very good for both teams involved. Thanks again.
From Lee (7/19): Hey Otis, Congrats on your promotion. When I was 11 years old my dad took me to Forrest High to see you play. I still remember how you dominated. I graduated from Forrest in 1988, I played baseball and one day at practice I asked coach Chipiletti if Stacy Poole was the best player he ever coached. Earlier that day Bobby Cremins had been to our school to visit him. Coach Chip said that Otis Smith was by far the best player ever to play at Forrest. He said Stacy wasn't in the same class with you. The next day Jim Valvano was at the school recruiting Stacy. You were my all time favorite NBA player. I got to play 1 year of baseball with Wilbur, he was a senior when i was a sophomore. Tell him Lee said Hi. Anyway there are a bunch of us westsiders who are extremely proud of you. You have always been a class act. Congrats again!! Later Lee W.
Otis: Lee, It's always good to get emails from my past, but it makes me feel really old when you talk about my Forrest High School days and coach Chip. I learned so much and enjoyed playing for him. But Stacy played with my younger brother Wilbur, and he thought Stacy was the better player. We both had very good careers and enjoyed Forrest High and Coach Chip. Tell all the westsiders I said hello.
Dave (7/10): Otis, I understand keeping Redick out of Summer league play, but can you also keep him out of the U.S. National team play this Summer? I’d hate to see him get injured trying out for the National team and then we get 3 salaried years and no playing years.
Otis: Dave, I'm sure by now you have seen the reports. We want J.J. to get off to a very good start to his career. So it's important that he rehab his back, at the proper pace. He is a warrior, but with that said, it is in his best interest not to compete...on any level until release by our doctor. We are taking thing very slow. Thanks for your interst.
From Matt (7/07): Otis, HUGE magic fan here from Rhode Island. Congrats on getting JJ, I really think that he will fit in well, despite what the critics say. My question to you is; I know it is hard to just go out and trade/sign a superstar, but are you looking at any free agents, or NBDL players to play a role for the team, such as Ndudi Ebi or Tierre Brown. Also, are you looking at any of the players who went undrafted in the '06 Draft like Taquan Dean or anyone else. Please wirte back, thanks alot Otis!!!
Otis: Matt, First let me say thank you for keeping the interest up in Magic basketball in the state of Rhode Island. We look everywhere to find players to fill our needs. We have scouts that are all over the minor leagues looking for talent. We want the best players we can find and sometimes they come from other leagues as well as Europe. Go Magic!
