Orlando Magic
Orlando Magic Head Coach Stan Van Gundy
On overall game...
“I think they just called another foul. Wow. I’ll tell you what though; I don’t think we’ve ever shot free throws that well. I guess the rhythm you get into when you’re shooting that many, with 48 out of 53, pretty impressive. I thought look, our guys obviously, as I said yesterday to the guys at practice, it wasn’t, I didn’t have to really say anything to them they saw the film, the way they had played in the first game and obviously came out with a lot more energy and focus and intensity and the whole thing. And it was their first game, and first game you know when you’ve got a game under your belt and they don’t that’s a huge advantage in the exhibition season. So, I think they’ll look a lot better from now on. But I liked the way our guys came out. I thought you know we had a couple of short lulls but about the last 15 or 18 minutes those guys who played did a very good job. So, pretty happy with tonight with both ends of the floor.”
On Dwight Howard's readiness for the regular season...
“Well he’s really working on it and again he goes and gets five blocks tonight, four in a fairly short stint in the second half. I don’t think he’s taking over on the boards the way he’s capable of yet, but I think he will. And tonight’s not bad either, eight in 25 minutes but you know he hasn’t taken over in that but he’s playing great. I mean he’s just been fantastic and he’s been that way in practice too.”
On tonight's defensive effort...
“I just liked our energy and intensity and even in the second quarter it was frustrating because we just kept fouling people. And so not only were we sending them to the line all the time but the tempo of the game slowed to a walk, you know, where I thought we were having good success running the ball up and down the floor. But, when you spend a day just getting on guys about being more aggressive and getting into people, you know that’s going to happen, and so we fouled more. But I like the aggression. I mean even in the last group I thought that Courtney (Lee) and Mike (Mickael Pietrus) were really getting into the ball and pressuring. Adonal (Foyle) was coming to help, Brian (Cook) took a great charge. I think it went through everybody tonight, so I was happy with that.”
On Keith Bogans not playing...
“Yeah, again, we have a little bit of a problem in the preseason there, in that M.P. (Mickael Pietrus) has to play or he’s not going to pick things up that we’re doing so we really can’t sit him and I really can’t limit his minutes that much, he’s got to be over 24 every night. And then, we think Courtney’s a real talented young guy, so we’ve got to get him some minutes. And with JJ (Redick) and Bogs (Keith Bogans) they both know what’s going on. Everybody wants to play I don’t need to see him as much. I know what he is and who he is. He won’t sit much, he’ll play on Friday. And I’m sure he’ll be rearing to get back and go at it. Same thing with Marcin (Gortat) and Adonal (Foyle) it’s just tough to play them both in the same night. So I played Marcin the other night and Adonal, and Tony’s (Battie) another one that has to play so it gets tough. So those other guys you have to limit.”
Dwight Howard
On tonight's defense...
“Coach got on us at the last film session and I think the main thing was that nobody wanted to be the star of the film. So everybody made a conscious effort. We should do it more often. We just did it jokingly but nobody wanted to be the Denzel of the film session. So we got pull that out more often.”
On J.J. Redick...
“He’s looking great; he’s shooting the ball well. I think the main thing is that he’s trying to get his shot off now instead of worrying about somebody blocking it. He’s shooting it with confidence. It’s what we’ve been telling him since he’s been here. He’s one of the best shooters in the world so let it fly.”
“I don’t think you’ve seen anything from J. J. He’s been on the bench so it’s the first time you’ve seen him. This is good, I like what I see, he’s playing great defense. He’s in the passing lanes, he’s playing great defense in the post, that’s what we need out of him. We want him to be on the floor with us.”
Anthony Johnson
On his night...
“The first game, we didn’t come out with the defensive intensity that we worked on all week. Coach kind of challenged us today in practice, had a tough practice and tonight we wanted to come out and show Coach that we could play up to his standards. We did it for the most part and now it’s time to go back to work and be ready for Friday.”
On his games...
“Like the first game, I got seven attempts and tonight it really wasn’t much opportunity for me to get any looks at the basket. At the same time, being a point guard, it’s easy for me to get other guys involved and guys were knocking down shots. I don’t have a problem facilitating those guys making shots and I don’t have a problem wheeling and dealing to get my own shots.”
Courtney Lee
On his defense...
“One of the things Coach Van Gundy emphasizes is defense and I’m just trying to stand out on defense. Defense is going to get you out there on the floor.”
On his state as an NBA player...
“Reality is sinking a little bit. Expectations are just like going out there and making plays on the defensive end and just keep helping the team on the road to victory.”
Charlotte Bobcats
Charlotte Bobcats Head Coach Larry Brown
On coming into the game...
“Just wanted to see what kind of shape we’re in. To see if we could execute a little bit. I thought our offense would be way behind, and it was, but I was hopeful defensively that we would do some neat stuff. We gave up 21 free throws in the first quarter and it was all because they hit us in the mouth right from the beginning. They were much more aggressive. They were great. Dwight (Howard) was great. He went to challenge shots. I thought everybody on their team got into our people, took us out of anything we were trying to run. And they score a layup on a post feed like the first or second possession. They ran about two or three simple pick-and-rolls and got right to the rim and that kind of set the tone. But it gives us a lot of time to think about things. Sean’s (May) way behind conditioning wise, but it’s great having him out there. I thought Emeka Okafor battled. Gerald Wallace and (Jared) Dudley look like they were playing on a different level than most of our other guys and that’s something we’ve all got to build on and figure out. We’ve all got to play that way.”
On using this game as a learning tool...
“When those kids work so hard in practice, it’s pretty tough to have a 40-9 first quarter. But that being said, a lot of the things we preach we’ve got to watch on film and I think they’ll recognize things we can do better. And as a coaching staff, there are some things we saw that hopefully we can teach better, and that’s important. I never worry about the other team, I worry about us because we don’t coach that other team. I think we are all aware of what we need to get done.”
Gerald Wallace
On Charlotte's execution...
“We have to execute. The thing that he (Coach Brown) has us doing that will benefit us a lot is we have to be able to execute. We go to Memphis tonight. We will watch film tomorrow and look at this game and see what we didn’t do right. We have a day to correct it before we play Memphis. Hopefully the Memphis game will be a different story from this game.”
On it being the Bobcats' first game...
“I think there were a lot of jitters because it was the first game and some guys may have been nervous. At the same time as a team we have to look at the fact they shot 26 free throws and we shot four in the first quarter. We needed to realize we were not getting it done with the jumpshot. We have to get the ball to the rim and force them into the penalty and see if we can play eight minutes in the penalty like they did. We just didn’t do that tonight.”
Sean May
On his team improving:...
“It is going to take some time. That is the good thing about preseason is I have eight games. I have to do it fast but it is going to take some time for me to get used to everything like spacing and being in the right place at the right time.”
On his personal improvement...
“It is basketball. I have played this game all my life. It is just my timing that is a smidgen off. I just have to do a better job of making sure I am in the right place at the right time.”
On the Bobcats' team...
“We have a chance to be a special group. This is just our first preseason game. I told guys not to beat yourself up over this. We are going to get better. This is the first time that Emeka and I have really played alongside each other. We have to do a better job and get a feel for each other’s game. There is talent with Gerald and J-Rich leading us along with Ray. There is a lot of talent on this team. Tonight was not a great showing but that is why it is preseason.
Jared Dudley
On his team adjusting to a new system:...
“We struggled early. It is a whole new offense. It is a new coach with a whole new system. The only thing you can ask for is effort. For the next game it is a chance to improve on it.”
