Orlando Magic partners with Waste Management to continue green initiative

January 8, 2009

Orlando, Fla. – The Orlando Magic have partnered with Waste Management to further the organization’s company-wide green initiative, Magic Chief Operating Officer Alex Martins announced today. The two-year partnership will include a program with the City of Orlando/Orlando Venues to place recycling receptacles inside Amway Arena and a “Green Sweep” that will take place at select games throughout the remainder of this season as well as during the 2009-10 campaign.

In addition to encouraging fans to recycle during home games, the aforementioned “Green Sweep” sponsored by Waste Management will allow fans to go green without ever leaving their seat, as recyclable waste will be collected in specific sections of the arena by members of the JetBlue Crew during Orlando Magic home games.

“The Orlando Magic is undergoing a company-wide green initiative, which will be punctuated by having the first LEED Certified designed and constructed professional basketball arena,” said Orlando Magic COO Alex Martins. “This partnership with Waste Management is another step in the Orlando Magic’s organizational goal of reducing our overall carbon footprint and initiating environmentally friendly practices into team business operations.”

The Orlando Magic is the developer of a new downtown Events Center which will compete to host major national events, concerts and family shows and is scheduled to open in the Fall of 2010. The facility is currently being designed and constructed with respect to Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification standards by the U.S. Green Building Council. Waste Management is the service provider for the Orlando Events Center as it relates to waste and the recycling of applicable materials on the construction site.
