Magic sign Reece Gaines

The Orlando Magic have signed first round draft selection Reece Gaines, General Manager John Gabriel announced today. Per team policy, terms of the deals are not disclosed.

Gaines was taken during the first round (15th pick overall) of the 2003 NBA Draft.

Gaines (6’6”, 205, 1/7/81) spent four seasons at the University of Louisville, averaging 15.6 ppg., 3.8 apg., 3.4 rpg., and 1.53 stlpg. in 125 career games (123 starts). Gaines was named an Associated Press Third Team All-American as a senior (2002-03), as he averaged 17.9 ppg. (third in C-USA), 5.0 apg. (sixth in C-USA), 2.9 rpg. and 1.69 stlpg. in 32 games. Gaines was also a finalist for the 2003 Naismith and Wooden Awards, given to the top college basketball player of the year.

A two-time, First Team All-Conference USA performer (2001-02, 2002-03), Gaines finished his career with the Cardinals as the school’s fourth all-time leading scorer with 1,945 points and also ranked on Louisville’s all-time list in three-point field goals (2nd, 225), assists (475, 5th) and steals (5th, 191).

In the recently completed Pepsi Pro Summer League (July 8-12 in Orlando), Gaines averaged 11.2 ppg. and 4.0 apg.
