Orlando, FL – The Orlando Magic have signed free agent guard Omar Cook, General Manager John Gabriel announced today. Per team policy, terms of the deal are not disclosed.
Cook (6’1”, 190, 1/28/82) played in 35 games last season with Fayetteville of the National Basketball Development League, averaging 12.2 ppg., 7.8 apg., 2.9 rpg. and 1.51 stlpg. in 31.6 minpg. He led the NBDL in assists, ranked seventh in steals and ninth in three-point field goal percentage (41-107, .383). Cook was named to the 2001-02 All-NBDL Second Team. He also set a league record for most assists in a game, dishing out 19 on Feb. 8 vs. North Charleston.
Originally selected in the second round (32nd overall) of the 2001 NBA Draft by the Magic, Cook’s rights were traded on draft night (June 27) to Denver for a future first round draft pick. He was waived by the Nuggets on Oct. 25, then signed as a free agent by Dallas on Nov. 25. The Mavericks waived him on Dec. 28. After spending most of the season in the NBDL, Boston signed him on Apr. 17.
Cook played one season at St. John’s University, before declaring for the NBA Draft. He was named Third Team All-Big East in 2000-01, averaging 15.3 ppg., 8.7 apg. and 3.0 rpg. for the Red Storm. Cook was also a unanimous selection to the Big East All-Rookie Team. He finished second in NCAA Division I in assists, and broke the SJU record for most assists in a game with 17 vs. Stony Brook. Cook became only the second freshman in Big East history to lead the conference in assists and he had the second-highest single season total in school history (252).
The Magic will hold training camp at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville from October 1-6.
