Orlando begins training camp tomorrow with 20 players

Magic Sign Dial, Ford & Williams

Orlando, FL – The Orlando Magic have signed free agents Derrick Dial, Alton Ford and Shammond Williams, General Manager John Gabriel announced today. Per team policy, terms of the deals are not disclosed.

All three players will participate in the Magic’s training camp, which begins tomorrow (Tuesday, September 30) at Disney’s Wide World of Sports Complex. Orlando’s roster now stands at 20 players (attached below).

Dial (6’4”, 184, 12/20/75) spent the 2002-03 campaign with Virtus Bologna of the Italian League. He played in five games with Orlando during the 2003 Pepsi Orlando Pro Summer League, averaging 6.0 ppg. and 1.4 rpg. in 17.2 minpg.

Originally selected in the second round (52nd overall) of the 1998 NBA Draft by San Antonio, Dial has played in 73 career NBA regular season games with the Spurs, New Jersey and Toronto, averaging 3.1 ppg. and 1.6 rpg. in 8.2 minpg.

Ford (6’9”, 280, 5/29/81) was originally selected by Phoenix in the second round (51st overall) of the 2001 NBA Draft. He has played in 64 career NBA games with Phoenix, averaging 2.7 ppg. and 1.8 rpg. in 7.5 minpg. Ford played in five games with Orlando during the 2003 Pepsi Orlando Pro Summer League, averaging 11.6 ppg. and 3.8 rpg. in 20.6 minpg.

Williams (6’1”, 201, 4/5/75) appeared in 78 total regular season games with both Boston and Denver, averaging career-highs of 8.0 ppg., 3.4 apg. and 2.2 rpg. in 24.1 minpg. He was traded by Boston to Denver, along with a 2003 second round draft pick and cash in exchange for Mark Blount and Mark Bryant on Feb. 20, 2003.

Originally selected in the second round (34th overall) of the 1998 NBA Draft by Chicago, Williams has appeared in 242 career games with Atlanta, Seattle, Boston and Denver, averaging 6.4 ppg., 2.6 apg. and 1.7 rpg. in 17.5 minpg. He has also shot .375 (206-of-550) from beyond the three-point arc during his career.

Prior to entering the NBA, Williams spent four years at the University of North Carolina. As a senior (1997-98), he averaged 16.8 ppg. and 4.2 apg. in 38 contests. He helped the Tar Heels reach the 1998 NCAA Final Four. Williams was named honorable mention All-America by The Associated Press, named to the All-ACC Second Team and to the All-ACC Tournament First Team. He also shot .911 from the free throw line, an ACC single-season record. Williams finished his career as the school’s all-time leader in three-point field goals made with 233.
