Orlando, FL – The Orlando Magic have place forward Grant Hill on the Injured List due to a bruised left shin, General Manager John Weisbrod announced this afternoon. The Magic were granted an exception to have a fourth player on the Injured List (Doug Christie, Andrew DeClercq and Hedo Turkoglu are also on the Injured List).
In addition, Orlando has signed Mark Jones for the remainder of the season. Per team policy, terms of the deal are not disclosed. He will be in uniform for Orlando’s game vs. Detroit tonight (7 p.m. ET).
Hill played and started in 67 games this season for the Magic, averaging 19.7 ppg., 4.7 rpg., 3.3 apg. and a team-best 1.45 stlpg. in 34.9 minpg. He also shot .509 (517-1,015 FG) from the floor and .821 (280-341 FT) from the free throw line. Hill was named a starter for the Eastern Conference in the 2005 NBA All-Star Game, the seventh time during his career he has been named to the mid-season classic. He was also named the NBA’s Eastern Conference Player of the Week for the period ending Nov. 21, 2004.
Hill led (or tied) the team in scoring 22 times, in rebounding twice and in assists 10 times. He scored in double figures in 64 outings, netted 20-plus points 32 times and had 30-plus points three times, including a season-high 39 points on Feb. 15 vs. L.A. Clippers. Hill ranks among NBA leaders in field goal percentage (T-14th), steals (19th) and scoring (T-22nd).
Jones (#7, 6’6”, 215, 5/25/75) appeared in four games with Orlando, averaging 2.0 ppg. in 7.8 minpg., after signing a 10-day contract on Mar. 23. He was released from that contract on Mar. 31. Jones also played in 41 games with the Great Lakes Storm of the CBA, averaging 20.8 ppg., 5.4 rpg. and 2.6 apg. He finished fourth in the CBA in scoring and was named to the All-CBA Second Team. Jones has also played professionally in Venezuela, France and the Philippines.
Jones spent his senior season (1997-98) at the University of Central Florida, where he averaged 20.8 ppg. (29th in nation) and 7.3 rpg. He led the Golden Knights and the Trans America Athletic Conference in scoring, and was named the TAAC Co-Player of the Year. Jones set a UCF single-game record by scoring 42 points vs. St. Thomas.
