Magic Already Looking Forward to Next Season

By Nick Adams | May 16, 2008

Not even a week removed from the end of their 2007-2008 season, the Orlando Magic is already preparing and looking forward to next season.

This up-and-coming offseason should be very interesting for the Magic who could potentially lose half their roster.

Keyon Dooling, Maurice Evans, Pat Garrity, Carlos Arroyo, and James Augustine are all un-restricted free agents while Keith Bogans and Adonal Foyle have the option to opt out of their contracts.

Dooling is optimistic about staying with the Magic, but realizes that the NBA is a business.

"I hope to be in a Magic uniform for years to come," Dooling commented. "Obviously, Orlando will be a choice of mine, but you still have to weigh all your options. There is a business aspect to it."

Foyle gave a more vague answer in regards to his player option, but spoke as if he was staying.

"I had a wonderful year with a wonderful group of guys. I look forward to seeing what the future holds."

What that future holds lies directly in the hands of Magic General Manager Otis Smith who has an abundance of decisions to make.

"There is never a quiet offseason and it is always busy, free agents or not," said Smith. "Our main goal is to find ways to improve our team."

Smith is taking the offseason process one step at a time.

"I believe in doing your work early. I am not going to sit here and talk about individual guys and talk about this guy or that guy right now. We will sit down with those guys and their people in the near future but right now we are in the draft process."

Orlando will receive the 22nd pick in the up coming NBA Draft this summer, and a lot of their focus on the draft will depend on what the Magic roster looks like at that point.

One player drafted by the Magic with the 11th overall pick in 2006, J.J. Redick, is coming off another season in which he saw limited playing time.

Redick's name was involved in trade rumors thoughout the season, but Smith says he fully expects Redick to be in a Magic uniform next season.

Despite all the possible roster changes, Smith stated that one of the Magic's main emphasis for the off-season will be to get power forward Tony Battie back healthy.

Battie missed the entire 07-08 season with a left should injury, and is anxious for the off-season.

"I wish it was October already," Battie "Structurally everything feels good."

The Magic know how important Battie is to their team, adding rebounding, toughness, and depth.

"Throughout the year, you saw where we missed a Tony Battie," said Smith.

In Battie's place, Rashard Lewis had to play out of position at power forward, something Lewis believes will make the Magic more deadly one Battie returns.

"To us, I think our missing piece is Tony Battie," added Lewis. "I learned a lot from playing out of position and I can honestly say I feel comfortable if coach needs me to play there."

Lewis continued, "We will be more flexible next season with Tony back because we will be able to go big or small depending on who we are playing against."
