Doc Rivers' Post-Draft Comments
Doc Rivers on Ryan Humphrey:
I like his athleticism, his ability to block shots, run the floor and rebound. He is an undersized four/three. It reminds me a little bit of Bo to be honest so that takes care of a couple of our needs. One was getting tougher, he might be one of the toughest guys in college basketball last year as far as physical toughness, and the other was athleticism. He does address two of our needs. He doesn’t give us great size, but he does have a great wingspan, he is a quick jumper, people have likened him to Dennis Rodman. I think we have a chance to have a guy that can help us now. He seems like a guy with sound character. You like guys that have that championship character and he seems to have that.
Doc Rivers On the European Influence in the Draft:
I personally think its something you are going to see every year from now on. You look at the foreign players, they have been playing in pro leagues since they were 16, they practice all day and have coaching all day, they are working on skills and fundamentals all day, and they want to get out and go play in Europe or the United States. The US is the number 1 place they want to play. It’s an untapped resource we are just starting to tap into. You are going to see it from now on. I think the European influence had a lot to do with why a lot of the American college players didn’t get drafted.
Doc Rivers On Ryan Humphrey Being a Risky Pick:
It’s a different type of risk. The risk in (Qyntel) Woods (is more that he is unproven and still needs to learn the game, he has a long way to go off the court, different issues. The risk with Ryan Humphrey is if he at his size can play some forward. He is going to be a player in the NBA. Now whether he turns into a four or a three, we don’t know yet, but he will be a player, he will find his way on the floor. If you talk to people in the NBA about Ryan Humphrey, that’s the one thing you hear every single day. He’ll find his way. We don’t know how but he’ll get himself on the floor, and that’s the way I look at it.
