Catching Up With the Players

By Nick Adams | September 24, 2007

As the players start to arrive back in Orlando in preparation for training camp, OrlandoMagic.com got a chance to catch up with most of them at last weekend's Select-a-Seat event at Amway Arena. In between signing autographs and mingling with fans, we asked them about their off-seasons plus their views on the up-and-coming season.

Bo Outlaw

Did you get a chance to vacation this summer?
"I don’t vacation. A vacation is considered when you go somewhere and relaxing right? All I did was work out."

What did you do for your off-season workouts?
"I Went to California and worked out. I went to France and did a camp. I went to Philly and worked out with Jameer. I’ve been gone. I was here until July, but other than that I’ve been gone working out."

What do you think of Stan and the coaching staff?
"Pretty good. They got a scheme on offense and defense. We haven't really practiced yet so everything is just kind of word of mouth."

What do you think the addition of Rashard Lewis brings to the team?
"When you get a guy of his caliber, that's a good addition. He can do so many things. He's a big forward, inside and outside, so he can help in a lot of different ways. He's a versatile guy who can do it all."

What are your expectations for the season?
"Come out play hard and give ourselves a chance. You want to come out compete and play for a championship. You can't set your goal as anything less than that because that is what we are all playing for."

Pat Garrity

Did you get a chance to go on vacation?
"I did. About two weeks ago I just got back from South Africa. I was over there with the NBA and went on a safari with my wife, so that was cool."

What did you do for your off-season workouts?
"I stayed here and just tried to stay in shape in a number of ways. I bike a lot and went to the gym to shoot."

What do you think of Stan and the coaching staff?
"I think they are great. He's going to be a demanding guy, but in a positive way. He's the type of coach who will demand so much out of his players forcing everyone to play hard and develop good habits."

What do you think the addition of Rashard Lewis brings to the team?
"He brings another big guy who's skilled and can stretch the floor. Anytime you have a guy his size that can shoot the three adds so much versatility to a team."

What are your expectations for the season?
"To improve from last year. We have guys who have had another year of experience, so we cant you youth as an excuse this year."

Tony Battie

When did you get back into town?
"My daughter started school on August 1st, so I have been back since then."

Did you get a chance to vacation anywhere?
"Yeah, I spent a little time at the Bahamas. I went to Vegas to see a couple fights, and spent some time in my home town of Dallas with my family."

What do you think of Stan and the coaching staff?
"He's a great teacher. We have had some involuntary workouts and most of the guys have been there learning the new offensive and defensive schemes. I think it's going to be a great season for us."

What did you do for your off-season workouts?
"I did a lot. I changed my diet and slimmed down a little bit. I lost some weight and did a lot of conditioning. I did abdominal workouts and some core training. I worked hard this summer because I want to prolong my career. Keeping my knees and legs strong is going to play a big role in that."

What are your expectations for the season?
"I expect nothing short of what we did last year. We should surpass everything from last year, and we know what to expect now as a team. We need to get into the second and third rounds of the playoffs. I felt like last year we were to happy to just make the playoffs, but this year we are going to higher our goals and go deep into the playoffs."

What do you think the addition of Rashard Lewis brings to the team?
"He brings athleticism. He can score which will take pressure off of Dwight. His size and ability will draw double teams allowing Dwight to do his thing down low, and it will also free up guys like J.J. His presence is going to help out everyone on the floor."

J.J. Redick

How is the hand?
"The hand is good. I am still doing rehab and getting it ready for camp, but I'm resting it now so I will be ready come training camp."

What do you think of Stan and the coaching staff?
"The coaching staff is great. They are putting a big emphasis on defense which is good. They seem like they are going to work us hard, but that can only benefit us."

What are your expectations for the season?
"I expect big things for this team. I think we are one of the better teams in the East, and just making the playoffs won't satisfy us this year. I don’t expect us to just sneak into the playoffs this year. We have a tough schedule the first month with the majority of games on the road, so it's going to be important that we are mentally tough during that stretch."

What do you think the addition of Rashard Lewis brings to the team?
"Rashard is a great player who will open up the floor and give us a lot more options offensively. Plus he will help us out on the boards."

What did you take out of the summer league that you could apply to the season?
"Anytime you get to play benefits you. I just got to work more on my NBA game, moving without the ball, creating better looks at the basket, so it's all a learning experience that will benefit me this season."

What did you do for your off-season workouts?
"I worked hard this summer. I did a lot of pool workouts, pilates, and running. The pilates was beneficial for me with my back and just working on my flexibility."

Keith Bogans

What do you do for your off-season workouts?
"I stayed in Orlando all summer. Lost some weight and stayed in the gym. I just wanted to stay in good shape. I think I got my rest the last 20 games of last season."

Did you vacation anywhere?
"I just went to Vegas."

What do you think of Stan and the coaching staff?
"I love Stan and everyone. I think Stan is an intense coach."

What are your expectations for the season?
"To make it to the playoffs and to make it further than last year."

What do you think the addition of Rashard Lewis brings to the team?
"Rashard brings a little bit of everything. He's a tall guy who can shoot. He's going to be our go-to- guy around the perimeter."

Keyon Dooling

When did you get back to into town?
"August 1st."

Did you vacation anywhere?
"Oh I vacationed. I went to the Bahamas like four times. That is my favorite place to go."

What did you do for your off-season workouts?
"I did a lot. Pilates, boxing, lifting, shooting, and playing with my kids. Playing with them was the hardest workout of all."

What do you think of Stan and the coaching staff?
"I am excited. I had a chance to play with Stan in Miami, so I know what he brings to the table. I am looking forward to it. He is definitely passionate about his job and knows what he is doing so it should be fun."

What are your expectations for this season?
"This time of year everyone's expectations are to win it all. That should be everyone's goal to set that bar. We have high hopes and we want to be better than last year."

What does the addition of Rashard Lewis bring to the team?
"He brings a consistent 20 point a night scorer. He's a guy that has been an All-Star and we are expecting a lot out of him. I know he is ready to deliver."

Trevor Ariza

What did you do for your off-season workouts?
"Shooting, shooting, and more shooting."

What do you think of Stan and the coaching staff?
"They are all cool. I like them a lot and they want the most out of you. They are going to push us and get the best out of us. I like that."

What do you think the addition of Rashard Lewis brings to the team?
"He is going to spread out the defense a lot. He is a great player who will help us."

What are your expectations for the season?
"To do better than what we did last season. This year hopefully we can go deeper into the playoffs."

James Augustine

When did you get back to Orlando?
"I never left Orlando. I stayed here pretty much all summer because I knew this year is going to be a big one for me. I just wanted to work hard and help the team to make myself better. I knew that working on my game and on my body would be a key thing, and this would probably be the best place to do it."

What did you take out of the summer league that you can apply this season?
"Just being able to play and expand upon my game some more. Work on some things, and even the last couple weeks of practice and the individual workouts have just helped me out so much."

Other than the summer league, what else was your off-season workouts like?
"My main thing was just to get my body in shape so I am able to be stronger in the post. I worked on my jump shot, ball handling, and anything to just improve my overall game."

Did you get to vacation anywhere?
"Usually on the weekends I would get out of Orlando and head up to Washington D.C. a couple of times with my cousins. I just tried to work as hard possible during the week and then once I got to the weekends it was my time to relax and get ready for the next week."

What do you think of Stan and the coaching staff?
"I love the coaching staff. They work hard and they are intense. They will get on you if you do something wrong which I like. They just want to win."

What are your expectations for the season?
"Our first goal is to make it to the playoffs. Our main goal is to get to the next level in the playoffs and win a championship. We just have to be more consistent throughout the whole season this year and I think we have the perfect team to do so."

Carlos Arroyo

When did you get back into town?
"I got back a week and a half ago. I needed my time to rest."

What did you take away from the FIBA's that you can apply to the season?
"Every year I learn something different. It’s a great experience because you are playing against a high level of competition each night which helps your game. It is an advantage for me to play in the FIBA’s every summer."

Other than the FIBA's, what was your off-season workouts like?
"It was good. I started June 1st working out with my trainer everyday. I am just looking forward to the season and making it past the first round this year."

What do you think of Stan and the coaching staff?
"I think they are going to great. Stan is a great teacher and he's going to help us out a lot as far as defensive and offensive schemes. He gives us different options in the game to be able to execute."

What do you think the addition of Rashard Lewis brings to the team? "Someone who is consistent offensively, consistent on average, and that is something we need at the three position."

Dwight Howard

What was playing with team USA like this summer?
"We got a gold medal. That was the best thing about playing this year. It is always great to represent your country and to actually win this time was good. I am very proud. I can't wait for this season. I am looking forward to new team. Stan is a good guy and a good coach, he gets to his players."

Did you get a chance to vacation anywhere? "I had no vacations. It's cool with me though, as long as we win and stay healthy."

What do you think the addition of Rashard Lewis brings to the team?
"He brings another scorer. It's nice to have another offensive presence like Rashard. I can't wait to play with him, it's going to be great."

What are you expectations for the season?
"Every year my goal is to win a championship, and I won't stop until I get one. So I'm going to keep playing and keep pushing until I get that goal."

Kevin Kruger

When did you get back into town?
"I got back on the night of September 9th."

What is something you can take from playing in the summer league?
"I think one thing is that I can hopefully just build on my good summer league, and transfer that over to the season."

What do you think your chances are of winning the final roster spot?
"That is really something I can't get to wrapped up in. I just have to go out, relax and play and let the chips fall where they may. I can't get caught up into that and I just have to go out and play my hardest."

What do you think you bring to the team?
"One thing I think I bring is that I am team oriented. I think I know where the ball needs to be and when."

Marcin Gortat

When did you get back into town?
"I got back yesterday night. I am very glad to be back."

What did you learn from playing in the summer league?
"The conception of coaching staff. I am a little in front of the other guys because I know the offensive and defensive sets that Coach Van Gundy wants to run. I will definitely use that to my advantage. I played in five games, and they were a very good five games for me. Even if I didn't play good it was a good experience."

What do you think of Stan and the coaching staff?
"I really like them. Stan built a championship team in Miami and now having him here with our young team gives me a great opportunity to develop into a good player on a good team."

How did you feel when you heard you were going to be signed?
"It was a great feeling. I still can't believe it. I don’t think it is going to hit me until the opening game when I come to the gym playing in front of 20,000 people. I just hope I don’t freak out or something."

What are your expectations for the season?
"As a team we want to make the playoffs and go as far as possible. We want to win a championship. We have a young team but we believe we can win."

What do you think you bring to the team?
"I just want to play and I want to win. I think I can come off the bench and help the team with my energy and get some good opportunities down low. I will also do all the dirty jobs that every new guy has to do."

Rashard Lewis

How are you liking Orlando so far?
"I like it. I'm closer to home and I'm kind of used to this area and climate. I am from Texas so I'm used to the hurricane season and we get the same rain the Orlando gets."

What do you think of Stan and the coaching staff?
"I like Stan and everyone a lot. They are a hard working group, and he treats everyone the same. He expects the best out of you. Off the court he jokes around but on the court it's strictly business and that is what you need to have a successful team."

What was your off-season workouts like?
"I worked out a lot back at home. There are a lot of NBA players who work out in Houston, and there is a pro league that I played in where I stayed in good shape. I wanted to get down in Orlando early so I could interact with my teammates and everyone to get that chemistry going."

What do you think you bring to the team specifically?
"My work ethic. Going out on the floor and leading by example. Obviously being my 9th year in the league I am going to have to help out the young guys. I know Dwight is a great player and he's young so I am going to help him out as much as I can to make the playoffs."

What are your expectations for the season?
"My expectations are to win a championship. I signed a six-year deal, Dwight just singed an extension so there is no reason why we shouldn't be fighting for a championship now and even win one in a couple years. I want to bring a championship to Orlando, and once we get that one then we are going to be greedy and try to get another one."

Torrell Martin

When did you get back into town?
"I got here about two weeks ago, the eighth I think."

What did you learn from playing in the summer league?
" It was a good experience. It gave me a good chance to play against some good young NBA talent, superior to what I played against to college. The intensity level was a lot higher because all the guys that played in the summer league are basically fighting for a roster spot or to increase their playing time."

Other than the summer league, what else did you do in the off-season?
"My agent hired me two trainers. One for stability and balance, and the other for strictly basketball, movements and lateral movements. I moved to Raleigh, North Carolina where my trainer was at and worked for two months straight, two times a day, seven days a week, so it was tough."

What do you think of Stan and the coaching staff?
"I love the staff so far. I got a chance to work more with the assistant coaches in the summer league but now that Stan is back everything is starting to come together."

What do you think you bring to the team?
"I have the ability to shoot the three well, set shot, off the dribble, or falling back. I have the ability to drive the hole well, play good defense, jump and rebound well. I am athletic, and most importantly I run the whole game. I can get up and down the floor, east to west, north to south very well. I can adjust to the game fast."

What are your expectations for the season?
"We want to be the best defensive team in the league. If we lose a game, it's not going to be because of our defense. We want to advance further into the playoffs."

Jameer Nelson

What do you think of Stan and the coaching staff?
"I like them a lot. They are easy to talk to and they listen. They incorporate what you are saying into what the team is trying to accomplish."

What do you think the addition of Rashard Lewis will bring to the team?
"He will take a lot of pressure away from everyone. The caliber of player he is just will allow players like myself and Dwight to relax a little more on offense."

What are your expectations for the season?
"Obviously we want to win a championship. We have the talent. We can and we do better than last year."

You took the team to Philly with you again, how was it?
"Everything was good. I think this year everything was just in a little better order as far as getting everything set up, so it made the time with the team more enjoyable."

Adonal Foyle

When did you get back to Orlando?
"I was back and forth all summer, but I came back about ten days ago. It has been really hectic trying to find a place and move in."

How are you enjoying Orlando so far? "I love it. I am used to this weather and atmosphere. Not only that but it is a pretty amazing organization in the way they approach everything."

You have played your whole career with one team, what was it like coming to a new one?
"Clearly when you have been with one team and organization for the past ten years it is going to be different but I am very excited and looking forward to being a part of this organization. I knew Otis when he was with the Warriors so to be back here with him is very exciting. I am glad to be a part of a young up-and-coming organization such as the Magic."

What do you think of Stan and the coaching staff so far?
"Coach is awesome. He believes in defense. That is very important because that is one thing I have learned throughout the years is if you don't play defense you are not going to win."

What are your expectations for the season?
"My expectations are to come out and play hard every night. Give ourselves a chance to win every game. Look at that as a challenge to go out and play hard. If we do that then there is no doubt we can win a lot of games."

Hedo Turkoglu

What were your off-season workouts like?
"They were good. I played in the European World Championships and did well. It was a good chance for me to stay in good shape."

Did you get a chance to vacation anywhere?
"Yeah, I went back to Turkey and spent a lot of time with my family. It was nice to just stay with them and relax in my home country. I had a chance to start my own website. If anyone is interested it is www.hedo79.com. Besides that I just had a good summer, learned a lot and hopefully I can use what I learned to take the team to the next level."

What do you think of Stan and the coaching staff?
"There is nothing you can really say about Stan that hasn't already been said. He doesn't have to prove himself. He is a great coach who built a championship team in Miami. It is going to be exciting for all of us to get a chance to play for him. We just can't wait to get ready for the preseason and play his style of basketball."

What are your expectations for the season?
"Our expectations are always high. We are young but I think we are more mature than last year. Every year we gain more and more experience which can only benefit us in taking us to that next level and hopefully reaching the Finals and winning a NBA Championship."
