What’s Your Sign?
Saturday, March 19th was a special day for someone on the Orlando Magic team. Hmmm…let’s see, who had something special happen on March 19th? Oh, DeShawn Stevenson scored a season high 16 points against the Portland Trailblazers. Definitely, Chris Jent, gaining his first win as Orlando’s head coach! Yes, those were both special events, but the guy that’s being referred to is Hedo Turkoglu.
What was so special about the 19th for Turkoglu? Here are some clues: candles, cake, balloons, the beginning of life. OK, by now it should be obvious! March 19th was Turkoglu’s 26th birthday and what better of a gift than a win over the Trailblazers, at The Rose Garden (a place the Magic haven’t gotten a win since 1997), to break a seven game losing streak.
Although many relish in all the hoopla that comes with birthdays, Turkoglu is not one of them. When questioned about his special day, he wasn’t eager or even the least bit concerned, as most tend to be once past the highly anticipated age of 21. It truly is just another day for him.
“I don’t have anything planned,” he nonchalantly said. “Even if I go out, I go for my friends (or) teammates. I’m not a big celebration (type of) guy. I don’t really celebrate, (unless) somebody does something for me, but I don’t plan anything.”
It’s one thing to not make a fuss over himself, but he doesn’t even allow his loved ones to fuss over him.
“I make my wife tell me what she’s going to buy,” Turkoglu said. “I don’t really like surprises. I can’t wait! (When she tells me what she’s going to buy) If I don’t like it, I tell her to get me this one because it’s better.”
However, we must empathize with Turkoglu and some other players who don’t really make big deals about their birthdays. Especially when their birthday falls within the season. When these guys are on the road in some foreign city, away from family and friends, it can be kind of easy to consider it just another day, like Hedo, who was busy scoring 15 points against the Trailblazers on this particular night.
At times like this, it helps when you have a close knit group of teammates to either sing to you, like that of a serenade (which the veteran players get from the rookies on their birthdays), or a night out with the guys, but both remain Orlando Magic birthday traditions.
With Turkoglu’s birthday being on March 19th he would fall under the zodiac sign of Pisces- The Fishes (2/20-3/20). Traditional characteristics of Pisces include: imaginative, sensitive, compassionate, kind, selfless and secretive. But Turkoglu only considers himself to have two out of the six characteristics.
“I’m very sensitive, I can cry,” he laughingly says. “I’m kind too.”
Teammate Steve Francis is also a Pisces with his birthday falling on February 21st.
